On Friday 24th March around 30 people will gather to sleep out for the night in the grounds of Horsham YMCA Football Club as part of YMCA DownsLink Group’s Sleep Easy 2017 event. It won’t be a true taste of homelessness but it will raise awareness of youth homelessness and vital funds for the YMCA’s work with young people. Across Sussex and West Surrey YMCA DLG houses around 550 young people every night who would otherwise be homeless, as well as working with hundreds more facing, or at risk of homelessness. Could you make a donation to the Sleep Easy appeal and help the YMCA to do more?
The aim is to raise £40,000 – a huge target but altogether over 100 people will be ‘sleeping rough’ that night at three locations across the YMCA DLG area. In Horsham the volunteer ‘rough sleepers’ include staff from YMCA hostels in Horsham and Crawley, volunteer chaplains and a young resident from the Horsham Y Centre, several supporters from A Band of Brothers in Crawley, as well as staff from Horsham District Council.
Rob Jarvis of Horsham Housing Department said, “As the Head of Housing Services for Horsham District Council I have experienced the great work undertaken by staff at Horsham Y Centre. If I can get involved to help support this work to continue whilst developing a greater appreciation of the challenges our customers experience then it’s an opportunity not to be missed. That said, some of my colleagues didn’t think I would do it so I also have to prove them wrong!”
