Hospital screens promote community safety

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Patient information screens at Crawley Hospital are being used to deliver community safety messages and advice.

The initiative, sponsored by the Safer Crawley Partnership, publicises the free services of four independent charities:

• Victim Support

West Sussex Mediation

Sussex Crimestoppers

Crawley Neighbourhood Watch

The screens will also provide a range of NHS information, advice on health and wellbeing, alcohol and drug misuse issues.

The screens have the potential to reach an estimated 80,000 people who pass through the hospital’s Urgent Treatment Centre each year, meaning a wide audience will receive the important messages.

Councillor Nigel Boxall, Chair of the Safer Crawley Partnership, said “The Safer Crawley Partnership has helped to reduce overall crime in Crawley by 40 per cent over the last six years.

“This success would not have been possible without the vital support of local voluntary and community sector organisations.

“Crawley Hospital is one of our partners and has provided us with an excellent opportunity to reach thousands of people who may otherwise be unaware of the community safety services available to them.”

Unique QR codes on the adverts will enable smartphone users to access relevant websites quickly and easily. The information and website details are also available at www.crawley.gov.uk/communitysafety

Crawley Hospital Charity Abseil in aid of 4SIGHT

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

The building stands at over 70 feet high and this amazing experience is a once in a lifetime chance to abseil this prominent local sight whilst fundraising for our charity 4SIGHT.

If you are interested you can ring our Crawley office on 01293 657090 or our Bognor Regis HQ on 01243 828555 for further information.

Saturday 28th July 2012 at Crawley Hospital.

4SIGHT has been running for over 90 years and helps blind and partially sighted people in West Sussex. We have a centre in Crawley with outreach workers, club volunteers and befrienders who support the 187 blind and partially sighted members we have living in the Crawley area. In addition to our members, we also support and advise hundreds of other people within the community. We have to raise £500,000 a year to keep our services running and one way to do this is by running fundraising events such as this one. So please … why not encourage a team from your club to get involved in this fun and thrilling event.

WHO 4SIGHT ARE AND WHAT WE STAND FOR

4SIGHT – West Sussex Association for the Blind – was established in 1921. In the last year we supported over 2,000 members, and delivered services to over 5,000 people, with a wide range of practical support solutions to help them remain independent following sight loss.

Our main aim at 4SIGHT is to improve the lives of vision impaired people, whoever they are, whatever they do, wherever they find themselves. We do this though visits, information, guidance, advocacy and direct support.

Our aims are to enable people to:

• Adjust to sight loss

• Make the best use of low vision

• Combat social isolation

• Access appropriate information and advice

• Maintain independence

• Participate actively in their communities and family life

• Access facilities and open spaces, across town and country

• Access high quality personal social care and clinical services, with appropriate and timely choices

• Influence service design, provision, commissioning and planning

• Make informed choices about their own health and wellbeing

4SIGHT also;

• Campaigns to remove barriers to independence and inclusion

• Promotes eye health

• Supports volunteering and employment of blind and partially sighted people

• Ensures that blind and partially sighted people participate fully in the governance of 4SIGHT

HENRY SMITH MP OPENS CRAWLEY’S NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART MAMMOGRAPHY UNIT

Monday, February 13th, 2012

This afternoon Henry Smith MP was delighted to open the new mammography machine, providing the latest digital technology for breast cancer screening, at Crawley Hospital.

Henry commented,

“I called for the new mammography machine to be located in Crawley shortly after being elected as local MP, explaining that our central and easily accessible town would be the ideal location. I’m delighted, therefore, to officially open this new mammography unit today, worth about a quarter of a million pounds.

“After a decade of units moving away from Crawley this represents the beginning of services being re-centred in the town.

“The new machine is a more efficient system than the traditional film x-ray, allowing more women to be seen in a shorter space of time and so is a win, win through greater convenience to patients and reduced costs for the Hospital. I congratulate Surrey & Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust for this investment.”

The new machine will provide:

• Improved workflow allowing more patients to be seen;

• Connectivity to a digital Image archive for rapid retrieval of images; and

• Improved ergonomics for both radiographer and patient.

Crawley MP Seeks To Raise Profile Of Ovarian Cancer In Crawley

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Crawley MP Seeks To Raise Profile Of Ovarian Cancer In Crawley

Almost 7,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year which is in spite of the fact that, if detected early, survival rates can be at about 90%.

Henry Smith said:

“I have today added information concerning the importance of diagnosing ovarian cancer early onto my Citizens Advice Bureau stall at the County Mall Advice Shop to help raise awareness.

“Some symptoms of ovarian cancer can be similar to more common conditions, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and cannot always be detected through regular screening tests.  The signs can include a swollen stomach, tummy pains and an inability to eat or feeling full.

“I was first struck regarding the importance of ovarian cancer awareness when a young local resident met with me on the issue last year. Fortunately, she was diagnosed just in the nick of time and I’m delighted was successfully treated but other are sadly not so fortunate. In Parliament I have joined a cross party group of MPs to help raise awareness and locally I’ve been pleased to support local cancer services, such as the new radiotherapy equipment at Crawley Hospital.”

The additional funding will be provided for:

• diagnosing cancer earlier;

• helping people to live healthier lives to reduce preventable cancers;

• screening more people;

• introducing new screening programmes; and

• making sure that all patients have access to the best possible treatment, care and support.

“All-in-all it is safe to say that Crawley health services have had some excellent and extremely encouraging news this week, particularly for cancer patients, and this is certainly something which I will be looking to build on.”

Crawley MP Welcomes New Mammography Machine For Crawley Hospital

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Henry Smith MP was delighted that efforts to acquire a new mammography machine, providing the latest digital technology for breast cancer screening, have paid off for Crawley Hospital.

Henry said, “Last year I appealed for the new mammography machine to be located in Crawley, explaining that our central and easily accessible town would be an ideal location. I am, therefore, extremely thrilled to hear that this new machine, worth a quarter of a million pounds, has been earmarked for Crawley hospital.

“The new machine is a more efficient system than the traditional film x-ray, allowing more women to be seen in a shorter space of time and reduce the Hospital’s expenditure on film and chemistry.”

The new machine will provide:

• Improved workflow allowing more patients to be seen;

• Connectivity to a digital Image archive for rapid retrieval of images; and

• Improved ergonomics for both radiographer and patient.

The League of Friends of Crawley Hospital, chaired by Ms Lesley Marginson, has supported the provision of the mammography machine. Henry congratulated Ms Marginson, “The League of Friends of Crawley Hospital first brought this issue to my attention and have been extremely proactive in pursing this new equipment and helping to secure the means to better combat cancer amongst women locally in Crawley.

Henry continued, “I have also been working to acquire a new Radiotherapy machine, which is used to treat and control many different types of cancer, killing the cancerous cells in the affected area of the body, since before I was elected as Member of Parliament for Crawley.”

Crawley MP seeks assurances from East Surrey Hospital bosses over the future of maternity provision

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Following a damning report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) into the state of maternity services at East Surrey Hospital, Crawley MP, Henry Smith, has written to the Chief Executive of the Surrey & Surrey NHS Healthcare Trust, the body which runs the Redhill hospital, seeking urgent assurances that they have a robust plan to improve the service.

Henry said, “Most Crawley mothers give birth at East Surrey, indeed my own children were born there. At such a critical time as pregnancy and the start of new life it is vital that neo-natal and post-natal provision should be reliable and safe, that’s why this inspection report in to those services at East Surrey Hospital is such a worry and needs correcting soon.

“It’s been almost a decade since the previous government removed maternity from Crawley Hospital, when the service used to be local and convenient for Crawley mothers. I think this just reiterates the need for a new Crawley area hospital with a new maternity department.”

The news that our local and very successful cancer centre will remain in Crawley with a brand new state-of-the-art machine is a welcome early Christmas present for the town.
