A new school year started this week and 26 projects to provide additional places for the admission year were all completed on schedule.

The work, costing approximately £15 million, is part of a West Sussex County Council programme to cope with the large increase in primary numbers.

The initial works has provided an additional 597 places.

In total over the next few years, the County Council will be providing an additional 6,000 places across West Sussex covering all year groups, and work on this has already started.

Some of the building work will be phased as children move up the age range.

Peter Griffiths, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, said: “I am delighted that all the building works that have taken place during the summer holidays were completed on schedule.

“We have been working hard with school leadership teams, governing bodies and parents during recent months, and there were a series of consultations.

“It shows we are very alive to the surge in primary school numbers that most education authorities are facing.

“This is a huge challenge, but I am confident that working in partnership with our schools, that we will rise to it”.
