On the weekend of the 29th and 30th September 2012 a group of Royal Marines, Former Royal Marines, Royal Marines Mums and supporters of Royal Marines took on an epic challenge to Yomp from Brighton Pier to the Royal Marines Museum in Portsmouth. Each Yomper carried a staggering 50lbs over this 52 mile yomp.
We were led off by the Mayor of Brighton at 8am on Saturday to start our 1st leg, which finished at Chichester Lakeside Holiday Park – This was donated to us for the night and our supporters had all the tents setup and a hot meal and a few can of beer.
We set of on Sunday at 8am for the 2nd leg of the Yomp which took us through some beautiful parts of the south coast to Portsmouth.
On arrival at the Museum we were led in by our support vehicles and met by a drummer who marched us onto the grounds, followed by a gun salute. We were met by the Portsmouth Mayor and the museum laid on a BBQ for the team
The whole event has to go down as one of the best I have done and this was down to the support and team that made this a weekend to remember. We hope to have raised around 22K for this event, with one donation of £5k coming from an individual (who asked to remain anonymous).
I would personally like to thank ALL of the Yompers for their outstanding effort and their sheer determination in achieving what they did.
I would also like to pass on my humble thanks to Jimmy Jukes (UK Homes 4 Heroes), Dez Northover (Campsite organiser), Hugh McKenna (Medical Cover), Julie Hutton (Physio Team), Vision Travel (Coach) Lakeside Holiday park, The Royal Marines Museum and all of the other supporters that helped make this event so epic.
