Crawley Town 1 – 2 Luton Town

The Red Devils were dumped out of the FA cup in the first round by Luton, who reversed the 2 – 1 score line from the league game earlier in October.

Crawley made a couple of changes to the side that beat York City, Roarie Deacon and Christian Scales can in for Shamir Fenelon and Mitch Hancox.

The home side had the better of the game in both halves and created numerous chances to take a deserved lead in the tie, but like all things at present could find that finishing touch. The visitors were not as strong as in the league game, resting some of their key players including the first choice keeper but still managed to take the lead early in the second half when a curling shot from Josh McQuiod sailed over Darryl Flahavan into the net on 54 minutes. The Red Devils continued to cause the Luton defense problems but still couldn’t trouble the visiting reserve keeper who made a couple of comfortable saves.

On 63 minutes the home side were back in the game. Forcing a corner, the center from Simon Walton’s found Matt Harrold who headed home for the equaliser which on balance of play they deserved. Walton, probably having his best game for Crawley continued to go forward looking for the winner and all seemed comfortable against the Hatters side, but with the game heading for a replay, McQuiod was on hand on 89 minutes to fire past Flahavan following a defensive error by Josh Yerworth when he failed to clear the ball hitting Scales and rebounding to the Luton striker. The Red Devils had no time to react to this late winner and Luton will be in the hat for Monday’s 2nd round draw.
