Crawley continued with their defensive frailties against Rotherham at the Broadfield Stadium yesterday. If the Red Devils want to win games playing this style of attacking football then manager Richie Barker has to get a striker in to put the ball in the net as we need to score at least three goals per game as we will concede as many. Rotherham have an abundance of strikers including Matt Tubbs who started the game but failed to show any of the prowess when a Red Devil and was substituted for Worrall midway through the second half.
Against the Millers, Crawley were toothless in front of goal, and former keeper Scott Shearer has very little to do all match – except for picking the ball out of the net from a Mat Sadler free kick on 15 minutes which everyone missed as it sailed into the net. That was as good as it got for Crawley, after this Rotherham came back at the home side and but for Phil Jones would have equalised sooner – but the inevitable happen on 36 minutes when Agard headed home from on of Rotherham’s many corners. The Miller’s had chances to take the lead but the easiest went to again Agard and he missed from five yards putting the ball wide.
In the second half both teams started in the same manor with Rotherham counter attacking and finding the Red Devils defence missing – only some poor finishing and some great stops from the home keeper kept Rotherham and the score line level. Barker replaced hard working Proctor with Alexander on 68 minutes, but the home side still were toothless giving the ball away on many occasions and not testing the visiting keeper when chances did arrive. On 71 minutes Evans brought on Worrall, and within 6 minutes he had found the back of the net from again some poor home defending, a defensive header looped in the air and fell just outside the penalty area allowing him enough time to control and fire the ball across into the left hand corner of the goal. Crawley made changes, Luke Rooney making his home debut on 81 minutes and Sergio Torres on 88 minutes – far too late for them to make any impact on the game – Crawley had a final chance to equalise in the final minutes but the Rotherham cleared and ran through the Crawley defence with Alex Revell tapping in a third, only to be ruled out for offside in the 90th minute. Steve Evans went away the happier manager with his first league win of the season and continuing to do what he did best when in charge at Crawley and winning at the Broadfield Stadium.
Crawley will be have to be at their very best on Friday when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers for their next League match – which is being shown “Live on Sky Sports”.
