Essential repair work starts soon on Mole Bridge, on the A23 London Road, east of Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal.
Routine inspections have revealed waterproofing on the bridge, which carries the road over the River Mole, needs replacing.
The bridge will remain open during the work but various lanes of dual carriageway will need to be closed in phases.
West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Highways, Bob Lanzer, said: “There’s never a good time to do this type of work but there will be 24-hour working to try to minimise the overall time the repairs take.
“We have also tried to consider various factors, including avoiding the school summer holidays and reducing the impact for people trying to get to and from Gatwick Airport.
“We have been liaising closely with the airport and used detailed analysis of peak periods in traffic to schedule the works so they have the least-possible impact.
“Unfortunately, there will be delays, for which we apologise, but we will do all we can to minimise these.”
During the work, all of the road surface will be removed to expose the concrete deck on the bridge, which was built in the 1950s. The waterproofing will be replaced and then the road resurfaced.
Subject to change due to bad weather, the preliminary timetable is:
Phase One: The road over the bridge will be single lane, east and westbound, 8.00pm, Monday 18th September, to 6.00am Friday 22ndSeptember;
Phase Two: A contraflow will be in operation 8.00pm Sunday 24th September, to 6.00am Friday 29th September;
Phase Three: A contraflow will operate 8.00pm Sunday 1st October, to 6.00am Friday 6th October;
Phase Four: Single lane, east and westbound, 8.00pm Sunday 8th October, to 6.00am Friday 13th October.
The contractor for this project will be Balfour Beatty.
A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport said: “Passengers flying from Gatwick Airport are advised to check traffic conditions before they travel, leave additional time and consider using alternative routes.”
The spokesperson also suggested would-be road users could instead consider using public transport, particularly the trains, if travelling to and from Gatwick.
Following on from the Mole Bridge work, weather permitting, there will be resurfacing on the A23 where the road goes under the airport’s South Terminal, from 8.00pm to 6.00am on October 30th to 31st.
