Community Wardens scoop up RSCPA Special Recognition Award

Crawley Borough Council’s Community Wardens have been awarded a Special Recognition Award at this year’s RSPCA Community Animal Welfare Footprint Awards for their efforts – one of only three councils to achieve this throughout England and Wales.

This huge accomplishment reflects the Community Wardens’ constant dedication to keeping local dogs safe, paying special attention to stray dogs who don’t have an owner to return to.

The Community Wardens Service has dealt with 67 dogs from January to August; seven dogs were handed over to re-homing organisations and the rest went back to their owners. In addition to this, they were able to reunite a stolen dog back with its owner in London.

The awards, hosted in RICS at Parliament Square last night (Tuesday 28 November), saw the presentation of the Innovator Award and the Special Recognition Award.

At Crawley Borough Council, the Community Wardens have expertly maintained this vital service while managing budgets and innovating different measures. This award recognises their efforts and sets a standard for other local authorities.

Councillor Geraint Thomas, Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “I’m delighted to hear our Community Wardens have received this award for their exceptional animal welfare work. They have done Crawley Borough Council and their community proud.

“This year, they were successfully awarded their ninth consecutive CAWF from the RSPCA. Without the wardens’ commitment and hard work, they wouldn’t have been submitted for this award. I have no doubt this high standard will continue.”

Leader of Crawley Borough Council, Councillor Peter Lamb, said: “I’m constantly amazed by the level of commitment from council workers in Crawley and what they achieve for our town.

“This is a well-deserved award for Crawley’s Community Wardens for a service which, as a nation of animal lovers, matters deeply for many people.”

Senior Parliamentary Advisor for the RSPCA, Rachel Williams, said: “Crawley Borough Council is a very worthy winner of this year’s award, with the judges remarking that the entry was ‘exactly’ what they were hoping to see.

“In particular, the team’s operational statistics and how they have strategically maintained an overtime budget in the face of significant cuts was extremely impressive, along with the continuous introduction of new ideas regardless of the instability within the sector.

“The team should be extremely proud of this achievement, which has only been awarded to three authorities throughout the whole of England and Wales. Crawley Borough Council has set the bar really high in animal welfare and we hope other authorities will be inspired to share their best practice.”
