Crawley MP welcomes Budget boost for Universal Credit

Monday, December 4th, 2017

Henry Smith MP has welcomed the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s announcement in the Autumn Budget on 22nd November that £1.5 billion is being directed to help people transition onto Universal Credit, the Government’s flagship welfare reform programme which puts work at the heart of the benefits system.

The Chancellor, Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, announced that the Government would reduce by seven days the time a claimant must wait before their first full benefit payment.

The period that the interest-free benefit advance can be recovered was extended from six months to one year. It was also confirmed that the amount of an advance would go from 50 per cent of the monthly entitlement to 100 per cent, meaning that a claimant could receive the equivalent of their first benefit payment up front.

Henry said;

“Universal Credit has been transforming lives by enabling more people get into jobs and earning more through work. I’m glad to see the Government has acted to cut down the initial waiting time and allow individuals who need it to get the equivalent of a full benefit payment right up front.

“Combined with other measures to provide an extra two week payment of Housing Benefit, worth an average £233, and the option to continue having rent paid directly to landlords in the private rented sector, the Budget will provide a real boost to people going onto Universal Credit.”

Universal Credit sees six existing benefits, for people on low incomes or out of work, replaced by a single Universal Credit payment. The programme is being rolled out across the UK in stages and is designed to help jobseekers with particular challenges to receive tailored help in order to secure one of the over 780,000 vacancies which exist in the jobs market.

The Crawley MP also welcomed other Budget announcements. On the Personal Allowance increasing to £11,850, Henry said;

“More than 56,000 Crawley residents have already benefited from increases in the Personal Allowance, and I welcome confirmation that the amount people earn before paying income tax will rise to £11,850 from next April.”

On the April 2018 increase in the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage, Henry said;

“There’ll be an increase in the National Living Wage for workers aged 25 and over from £7.50 per hour to £7.83 per hour. This will start in April 2018 and more than 2 million people are expected to benefit.

“For a full-time worker, this will represent a pay rise of some £600 a year.

“There will also be increases in the National Minimum Wage for 21 to 24 year olds, 18 to 20 year olds, 16 and 17 year olds, and Apprentices.”

On measures to abolish stamp duty land tax on homes under £300,000 for first-time buyers, Henry said;

“95 per cent of first-time buyers who pay stamp duty will benefit from these changes, and first-time buyers of homes worth between £300,000 and £500,000 will not pay stamp duty on the first £300,000. This will save £1,660‎ on the average first-time buyer property.

“Around 80 per cent of people buying their first home will pay no stamp duty at all.”

Aurigny scoops third place in national travel awards

Monday, December 4th, 2017

Aurigny has been ranked the world’s third best short haul airline in the 2017 Telegraph Travel Awards, thanks to the positive feedback of our customers.

Finishing the year on a high, Aurigny was the highest ranking British airline, and came just behind Swiss and Icelandair in the standings, compiled by the UK newspaper.

It comes less than a year after Aurigny scooped second place in the annual Which?

Magazine best short haul/economy airline survey. It also betters its fourth-place finish in the 2016 Telegraph Travel Awards.
This year’s Telegraph Travel Awards are based on the opinions of almost 90,000 readers.

Aurigny achieved the highest ranking of four British and Irish airlines to make the top ten, with Jet2 in fourth place, Aer Lingus in ninth and CityJet in tenth.

It comes as Aurigny launches its new team of staff at London Gatwick Airport this week, to further improve the overall customer experience at the London gateway.

Aurigny’s CEO Mark Darby, said: “This is a really positive way to end 2017, in what has been a very busy year for us.

These rankings are based on the views and opinions of the people who matter most, our travelling public, so third place is a great achievement and it’s great to see we came out on top of all the British airlines.

None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of everyone here at Aurigny, so I’d like to say a big public thank you to all our staff for their tireless efforts.”

Commercial Director Malcolm Coupar said: “This is really great news for everyone at the airline. For staff, it’s great for them to know their efforts have been recognised by the public.

We have been working hard this year to improve our customer service and communication and this will continue to be a priority next year.

We have also been trying our best to promote the islands and what they have to offer, and this accolade can only help to raise the profile of Aurigny and the Bailiwick as a whole.

Finally, I’d just like to thank all our loyal customers, without whom none of this would be possible.”

CRAWLEY WASPS YOUTH ROUND-UP: Reserves and Under-16s progress in Cups

Monday, December 4th, 2017

Rosanne Fine’s winner put Crawley Wasps’ reserves into the last eight of the South East Counties League Cup with a 3-2 win at Maidstone United.

Zoe Martin’s two headers seemingly put Wasps in command against Maidstone, who are top of the division below.

But the hosts, playing at the 4,200-capacity Gallagher Stadium where Wasps’ first team lost to Leyton Orient in the League Cup final in May, hit back to level before the break.

However, Fine’s goal ensured a home tie with Meridian in February, a repeat of last season’s quarter-final which Wasps won 4-2 in extra time.

There was also success for Wasps Under-16s, who made it into the semi-finals of the Sussex County Cup by beating Ringmer Rovers 2-1.

They dominated early on, with skipper Chanelle Gainsford curling an effort against the bar while Emily Flegg’s header was scrambled off the line.

Wasps took the lead when Chloe Bosher crossed for Ellie Livingstone but, in a competitive encounter, Ringmer levelled eight minutes after half time.

Parity lasted only another 10 minutes, though, as Gainsford struck from the edge of the box, although Wasps were indebted to an excellent one-on-one saveby Lauren Graves to seal the win.

Wasps’ development squad – the Ladies third team – were beaten 4-2 at home by Worthing Town. Tamzin Byworth and Abi Knight scored the goals.

“Football is a sport for all,” said Wasps chairman Paul Walker.

“LGBT players and fans are made to feel welcome at Wasps and should be so at every level of the game.
