Vistors go mad for new Madagascan Zone!

Tuesday, April 4th, 2017

The weird and wonderful wildlife of Madagascar in Tilgate Nature Centre’s new Madagascan Zone was unveiled to the public at their opening day on Saturday (1st April).

More than 1,200 visitors flocked to see some of the new facilities including the new aviary and reptile huts.

Kenya the serval was the main attraction of the day, with visitors learning all about the unique species at two feed and talk sessions.

As part of the day’s activities, visitors took part in quizzes, competitions and watched some special drumming performances of Madagascan music from Tall Paul and friends.

Councillor Chris Mullins, Cabinet member for Wellbeing at Crawley Borough Council, said: “The Madagascan Zone and its exciting cast of inhabitants is a wonderfully exciting addition to Tilgate Nature Centre.

“The Nature Centre is one of the highlights of Park, with its own Australasian Zone and now the Madagascan Zone! I would recommended the park to anyone looking for a family day out.”

The council will be raising money to help support the people and animals of Madagascar over the next few weeks, so you can visit the Nature Centre’s new additions and support the conservation of this wonderful island.

Gatwick celebrates World Autism Awareness Day

Tuesday, April 4th, 2017

  • Travelling through an airport can be a challenge for people affected by autism
  • Event designed to give an overview of airport processes before people travel
  • Staff from across the airport attended – airlines, terminal, security, assisted travel teams, the police, the fire service and immigration officials

Gatwick’s Autism Ambassador, Maria Cook, and organisations across the airport, celebrated World Autism Awareness Day yesterday, with over 30 local families attending an event designed to give children and adults with autism, their carers and families, an overview of airport processes before they travel.

Travelling through an airport can be a challenge for people affected by autism and the event in the North Terminal allowed families to ‘check in’, ride on assistance buggies, meet trained security dogs and the police, watch the x-ray machines in action and talk with staff about travelling with autism.

Gatwick is the UK’s first officially recognised Autism Friendly Airport and representatives from across the airport attended the event, including Gatwick’s Autism Champions, staff from airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Gatwick’s security and special assistance teams, the police, the fire service and immigration officials.

Autistic people often see, hear and feel the world in a different, more intense way, which can mean they feel overwhelmed by ‘too much information’ when out in public. Travelling through an airport can be a particularly apprehensive experience.

Anyone who requires assistance when travelling through Gatwick is encouraged to contact the airport’s special assistance team or their airline.

Maria Cook, Gatwick’s Autism Ambassador, said:

“I am so proud to be Gatwick’s Autism Ambassador and to play a part in the airport’s Hidden Disability Assistance Programme and official Autism Friendly accreditation.  I hope to see other UK airports follow Gatwick’s lead and establish official autism-friendly programmes of their own.

“The number of people in organisations across the airport who have volunteered their free time to be part of the awareness day has been overwhelming, from those working for airlines and security, to the emergency services, special assistance and terminal teams.  Across the board everyone involved wants to pro-actively improve their provision for people with Autism.

“It has been a mammoth team effort behind the scenes to make this day happen and I would like to thank everyone involved.”
