Create a Crawley Creature!
Free Workshops in the town in February
Crawley residents have the chance to get creative and take part in workshops in February to create Crawley’s very own creature.
The workshops are the next stage in the development of a creature that will represent the town in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
As part of West Sussex County Council’s ‘Ahead Of The Game’ four year programme of cultural events and activities leading up to 2012, each town in the County was given an egg. Crawley’s egg has been adopted by Crawley Festival, working with Crawley Borough Council and the wider community to develop the project.
The time has come for Crawley people to help craft the hatchling that will emerge and eventually take flight to represent Crawley during celebrations within town and across the region to mark the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Come along and enjoy fun, hands-on workshops with local artist Sam Murray and help shape the next stage in the creature’s development.
Sam says “Using recycled fabric and sports equipment, we aim to mix art and sport to create a fantastical creature that represents a creative Crawley! What it will look like depends on your direct involvement to reflect our diverse and vibrant community. No art skills are necessary, just interest and enthusiasm. I’d like to encourage grown-ups to come along and take part as much as children – to involve everybody. Expect to get a little messy with glue and enjoy being part of the creature’s metamorphoses by 2012.”
There are four free workshops being held in the town, at Ginger Moo Gallery in County Mall (Saturday 13 February 11am – 3pm), Langley Green Adventure Playground (Tuesday 16 February 11am – 2pm), K2 (Thursday 18 February 11am – 2pm) and Crawley Library (Saturday 20 February 11am – 3pm).
All materials will be provided. All ages and abilities are welcome and admission to each workshop is free. There is no need to book so just turn up! For more information contact Marie Ovenden 01293 438328 or email Sam on creative.action@tiscali.co.uk
The project is part of a series of events being planned by Crawley Borough Council to involve everybody in the town in the lead up to 2012. If you or your organisation would like to register an interest in taking part or creating an event please contact Nigel Sheehan, Head of Community Services and Chairman of the Crawley Group for 2012 Games via email nigel.sheehan@crawley.gov.uk
The Ahead of the Game cultural programme is coordinated by the West Sussex Arts Partnership, a partnership between West Sussex County Council and the District and Borough Councils in the county. The programme is supported by Arts Council England.

It was a great day for the school and especially the kids. I didn’t make the trip but know that this isn’t the first time they’ve performed and always ‘raise their game’ under the pressure.
Well done to all the kids!
Thanks for coming along to the event Shelley. It was really nice meeting you.
I hope that you enjoyed the afternoon.
I’ll whizz over some pictures soon.
Hope to see you again at our next event.
Best wishes,
Paul
What an excellent idea! far too many people over look their physical and mental health.. getting caught up in “everyday living”.
Once you create the habit of looking after yourself that bit better, you start to appreciate how much better you feel, less stressed and more able to deal with the inevitable challenges life throws at you.
There are so many ways to improve your health, there really is something for everyone.. although they all take effort, no strapping a contraption on yourself and melting the pounds away.. the rewards come in a physical and psychological way when you DO SOMETHING.
One of the best ways to relieve stress is put sometime aside for yourself.. you’re probably shouting “I don’t have the time” however it is essential you do, otherwise how can you effectively and efficiently manage your life. This is one of the least strenuos parts of being healthy, but takes discipline and focus.
Good luck and remember… if you’re not in optimimum condition, how can you hope to give your very best to others.

Thanks Shelley, a lovely report. It was really nice to see you, you’re very welcome at all of our events. I’ll keep you posted of our plans.
I’ve been invited to teach at the opening Nike Sponsored event at the Lilian Baylis School where I’ll be taking mini workshops for 45 minutes from 9.00 – 3.15. Apparently a number of MP’s, sporting celebrities and the TV will be there. It should keep me on my toes
Best wishes,
Paul
See you there! It’s going to be wicked *whoop whoop*
