Be a rock star – with West Sussex Music Service

Did you play along to your favourite records as a teenager and dream of being in a rock band? If so, West Sussex Music Service (WSMS) can make that a reality.

WSMS Rock Academy will be holding adult rock workshops at Northbrook College, Worthing, on Thursday evenings, starting in late September. Keyboard players, guitarists, bassists, drummers and vocalists of all abilities can go along and play in a band-type format, with the chance to play a gig at the end of term.

Peter Griffiths, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, said: “Our Music Service has been running the rock workshops for youngsters for several now, and they have been a great success.

“Now we are offering the chance for adults to expand on their musical skills, and perhaps re-live their love of music, as well as meet new people.”

The workshops will be held from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and 7.30pm to 8.30pm. They will cost £60 for 10 lessons.

Olympic legend visits West Sussex

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Young people from West Sussex were treated to a visit from Seb Coe on Friday (May 20).

The Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and double Olympic Gold Medallist, made the visit to mark the involvement of schools from across West Sussex in the London 2012 Education programme, and the ongoing success of West Sussex initiatives linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Seb visited Horsham’s Tanbridge House School, to mark the achievements of the county’s schools as part of the Get Set network – the official London 2012 education programme for schools, colleges and education providers across the UK. The day also saw another star of London 2012, Wenlock, the official mascot of the 2012 Olympic Game visit the school.

Seb was joined by 200 young people from schools across West Sussex that are involved in the Get Set programme, as well as a group of London 2012 hopefuls from the county. The athletes put on displays in Gymnastics, Sitting Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Judo, Cycling and Handball to showcase their skills to the London 2012 Chair. He then had the chance to watch and take part in coaching sessions led by the Hopefuls in, Sitting Volleyball, Handball Beach Volleyball and Athletics.

Seb commented: “It was a privilege to visit West Sussex today to celebrate the success of its 2012 initiatives so far, and to see the work in action. We want as many young people as possible to be involved with London 2012 and getting into sport. Having all these projects in place shows that the South East is really maximising the opportunities which are arising from the Games.”

The afternoon gave Seb the chance to see two presentations by youngsters from the host school, Tanbridge House, along with St Paul’s Catholic College and Mid Sussex School Sport Partnership, to showcase the work that they have been doing linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mr White, Headteacher at Tanbridge House School said: “I am delighted that Tanbridge was chosen for such a prestigious event. The presence of Seb Coe has inspired so many students to become involved with the 2012 Olympics and beyond.”

Chairman of Horsham District Council, Councillor Claire Vickers added: “The visit today was wonderfully inspirational for all involved. The showcase of sporting talent on display from our West Sussex London 2012 hopefuls, and from the young sports stars from the area, was fantastic”.

The visit was organised by the South East Partnership for the London 2012 Games in conjunction with West Sussex County Council (on behalf of the county London 2012 Games partnership West Sussex-Ahead of the Game) and Surrey County Council.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy commented: “It was a real privilege to have Seb visit West Sussex today, to celebrate the success of our widespread achievements at a local level. The school children were thrilled to be able to share their work linked to the 2012 educational programme with such a legend, and I’m sure it will be a day they never forget.

“We are hoping that this visit from someone as inspirational as Seb will make all our hard work surrounding the Olympics and Paralympics more visible to the public, and raise the profile of the 2012 programme locally.”

Councillor Lenny Walker, Crawley Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “It was great to see Thomas Bennett’s Get Set students have the chance to meet Lord Coe, an Olympic legend, in West Sussex on Friday. Olympic and Paralympic Games fever is growing and the visit has only served to heighten this excitement.

“It is really good to see the commendable partnership of Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council, Freedom Leisure and the schools being recognised by an Olympic icon such as Lord Coe.”

Pam Alexander, Chair of the South East Partnership, Nations and Regions Group Member for the South East and Chief Executive of SEEDA added: “The South East of England will host six events in 2012 – Time Trial and Road Cycling in Surrey, the Canoe Sprint and Flat Water Rowing Events at Eton Dorney, as well as the Paralympic Rowing event and today we have heard the great news that it will also host the Paralympic Road Cycling at Brands Hatch in Kent. Today’s visit demonstrates the energy and excitement already being generated right across the South East to make the London 2012 Games a success for all and to deliver a strong legacy of inspiration and achievement”.

Get your name on the BMX Track

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

This is what Crawley Borough Council’s new inclusive BMX Track will look like – and you could get your name on it!

The council is inviting BMXers to submit potential names for six of the track’s features. Anyone can suggest a suitable name, all they have to do is visit the extreme sports blog at www.crawleyextreme.com and submit their idea before Tuesday 31st May.

The competition winner will have the feature on the track named by them as well as receiving a prize from DC Shoes, a sponsor of the track.

Winners will be notified by email and the names of the features will be announced at the BMX Track’s first Race Day event, probably at the end of June.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “The BMX Track is yet another fantastic sporting facility for the town and this competition is a great chance to make a lasting impression on the track.”

The new £75,000 track, which is one of just seven other official tracks in the south east, opens on Monday 23rd May.

The four-lane track is designed to reduce pedalling by using the pumping action of the rider’s body weight and leg compression to propel themselves around the track, while an extra circuit will see bumps, textured surfaces and cambered / transition corners.

The track will be designed specifically with disabled children and young people and their parents/carers in mind and is set to be totally accessible, fun and challenging for everyone.

Funding for the track, which is next to Cherry Lane Adventure Playground, was awarded to Crawley Borough Council from West Sussex County Council’s Aiming High for Disabled Children programme.

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Freedom Leisure joined the World’s Biggest Swim throughout the month of April by raising funds during the annual Swimathon for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Friends and family from around Sussex rallied together to swim a 1.5k, 2.5k or a 5k personal challenge at ten of Freedom Leisure’s pools. New and improved website for West Sussex young people launched

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

The place for young people in West Sussex to find out what’s happening in the county has been improved.

The YourSpace West Sussex website has a fresh new look and is now easier to use and provides a single point of contact for services and information for young people, from careers advice and job searches (in partnership with Connexions), to bullying, sexual and health guidance and support, as well as things to do in the county and lists of youth clubs.

Volunteering opportunities are also highlighted on the website. Volunteering looks good on a CV, and can help young people stand out from the crowd when job hunting.

Bloggers and those who want to have their say on issues affecting their communities can do so, on YourSpace. Plus everything young people need to know about the West Sussex Youth Cabinet can be found at the click of a mouse.

The new ‘find’ function allows users to search the whole site in a quick and easy way. Searches can also be refined, making it even easier to find the information needed.

There are also ‘under 18s’ and ‘over 18s’ sections of the website, tailored to the needs of those age groups.

Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “Our flagship young people’s website is now even better for its users and has everything they need to know about what’s on offer to them in West Sussex.

“The new and improved features come after extensive consultation with young people themselves, asking them what they wanted to see on the website.

“Even the colours of the new website were chosen by young people as they didn’t like the old ones. They were kept involved as the website was developed.”

Open Air Theatre from The Hawth this summer

OPEN AIR THEATRE

Come outside and enjoy the arts in Crawley this summer

It feels like summer is almost here and to celebrate the return of the warm weather

The Hawth’s programme is going alfresco with four theatrical productions stepping

out of the theatre and taking to various outdoor sites in Crawley. So grab a blanket and a picnic and join us for some summer fun.

On Tuesday 28 June at 7.30pm the award-winning and ever-popular Illyria return to The Hawth Amphitheatre with Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. In its 20th year, Illyria present this story of a shipwreck – Viola is washed ashore in a country where everything is illogical, delirious, and completely topsy turvy. It could all end in tears – even if most of them are of laughter.

The ever-popular company return to Crawley, this time to Goff’s Park, on Wednesday 3 August 6.30pm with Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood.

All Mr Fox wants from life is to feed his family, and farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean have an ample supply of chickens, geese and ducks. But they are also the cruellest, meanest and most ruthless farmers you could ever meet, and they are determined to put a stop to Mr Fox once and for all. Mr Fox’s chances are slim at best…or will the sharpest wit win?

Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic opera, Pirates of Penzance is brought to life on Thursday 11 August at 7.30pm in the Amphitheatre. Illyria deliver another first for the UK open-air touring theatre circuit packed with laughter, romance and a galleon-full of memorable lyrics. This wonderful operetta is faithfully performed by a reduced cast and accompanied by a Musical Director on keyboard and actor/musicians on various instruments.

Rounding off the summer in the Amphitheatre is Pitchy Breath Theatre with

The Wind in the Willows on Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 August. Crawley’s community theatre present Kenneth Grahame’s classic following the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger and of course, the jovial but big-headed Mr. Toad! A great family favourite that will transport you to the river bank.

Tickets for Illyria’s three shows are £12 (discounts £9) each. Pitchy Breath’s Wind in the Willows is £7.50 (discounts: £6/Family of Four: £22).

To make it easy for you to get out and enjoy the sunshine and theatre we have an amazing SUMMER SAVER OFFER! Book any two or more of these performances and save 10%

Tickets can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or you can book online at www.hawth.co.uk.

St. George’s Day Parade for Crawley in 2012.

Monday, April 18th, 2011

In 2012 Crawley will have a St. George’s Day parade presenting cultural, working and educational aspects of living in Crawley. This will be followed by a display of music and dancing in Queen’s square.

There are already some excellent events celebrating various cultures that contribute to life in Crawley. There are some excellent events celebrating St. George’s Day. We now wish to add to this and hold a parade to celebrate out English culture.

This parade will take place on Sunday 22nd April 2012 the day before St. George’s Day.

The Parade will be non-political and our aim is to hold an event that is fun for all those that participate and enjoyable for all those that watch.

Volunteers are needed to help to organise the 2012 St. George’s Day Parade.

It is expected that the organising committee will be formed and start regular meetings in September.

We welcome all volunteers for this event and in particular we would like to include people with the skills to help with raising sponsorship, developing a web site, recruiting and organising the participants and the show in Queens Square and help in recruiting volunteers for the Parade. We will also need lots of volunteers for the parade itself.

We offer the opportunity for local businesses and organisations to enter floats and to sponsor the event.

We would also like to hear from anyone already planning St. George’s day event to avoid clash of schedules.

FIRST AID FUNDRAISER GEARS UP FOR THE LONDON MARATHON

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Crawley Mum, Vanessa Harold has been training hard in preparation for pounding the streets of the capital for the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 17th April.

Vanessa, 43 will be running 26.2 miles in aid of St John Ambulance in her second London marathon, having enjoyed the experience of taking part in last year’s event so much.

Her son Johnathan is a volunteer with the charity and seeing how the first aid training he receives helps to save lives is what inspired Vanessa to choose St John Ambulance as her nominated charity in 2010 when she completed the course in 5 hours and 16 minutes. She hopes to finish in less than 5 hours this year before going on to take part in the Edinburgh marathon in May.

Vanessa said: ‘I’m running for St John Ambulance because first aid can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved, and I want to help get this message out to more people. It won’t be easy, but I can’t wait to cross the finish line and make those who have supported me proud. They have also been at most of the other runs I have taken part in. Unfortunately, I cannot stand the sight of blood and pass out at the thought of it, so helping out in any way was out of the question for me, except running and raising money for them.’

St John Ambulance Sussex County Fundraiser Jeanne Peterson said: ‘We’re so grateful to Vanessa for going to such lengths to raise vital funds to help us equip more people with life saving first aid skills. She’s a real inspiration and we wish her the best of luck on the day.’

Although Vanessa is hoping the funds she will raise will be put to good use, she’ll be hoping not to see the evidence herself on the day, when St John Ambulance volunteers will be on duty at the event to care for runners who need first aid. Every year they treat around 5000 runners and get through approx 100lbs of petroleum jelly for alleviating blisters.

To sponsor Vanessa visit www.justgiving.com/vanessa-marathon2011 or for more information about St John Ambulance visit www.sja.org.uk

St John Ambulance treats 1,500 casualties at Brighton marathon

Members of the nation’s leading first aid charity treated around 1,500 runners and spectators at this year’s Brighton marathon and took 10 patients to hospital.

Operations manager Dan May said he was delighted with the way his volunteers had risen to one of the biggest first aid challenges ever undertaken by Sussex St John Ambulance.

‘This was a huge operation involving many months of detailed planning,’ he said. ‘Our volunteers dealt with everything from sprains and strains through to much more serious problems, including hyperthermia and exercise related collapse.’

‘I’m extremely proud of them. The fact that so many St John Ambulance members were willing to give up their free time to staff the event meant that the vast majority of patients were able to be treated at our on site medical facilities instead of placing an extra burden on local hospitals and the ambulance service.’

The charity provided 18 ambulances, four bicycles, two motor bikes, two advanced treatment centres and 16 first aid treatment centres for the event. The first aid team included 10 doctors, 20 nurses and eight paramedics.

The charity is not part of the NHS and also receives no core government funding so relies on donations and fundraising to continue its vital work in local communities. For information on making a donation or becoming a volunteer please call 01273 371 500 or visit www.sja.org.uk/sussex.

All Children and Family Centres In West Sussex Will Stay Open

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

All Children and Family Centres In West Sussex Will Stay Open

ALL 49 Children and Family Centres (CFCs) in West Sussex are to stay open, but changes in the way they are managed and a new funding formula have been unveiled.

A report on the service is to be considered by the County Council’s Children and Young People’s Services Select Committee later this month.

It asks for comments on a series of proposals before a final decision is taken by West Sussex Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Peter Evans.

He said: “As people are probably aware in some parts of the country there are proposals to close CFCs or Sure Start centres.

“I am pleased to say that in West Sussex we are not proposing to adopt this approach.

“CFCs provide an invaluable service to parents and children, and I am sure that we are all proud of the way they have developed and the strong community links they have forged.

“They will also be at the very cutting edge of our ‘Think Family’ early intervention and family support plans.”

The Select Committee report says that a new management model has been developed to deliver an ‘equitable countywide service in the most effective and cost efficient way’.

Proposals include moving to a ‘cluster management model’ based on geographical areas.

This will involve merging the management of a small number of CFCs:

• Maidenbower and Pound Hill in Crawley

• Storrington and Pulborough

• Rural Steyning and Henfield

• Rural East Grinstead and Bolney

The report also says that a new ‘fair and transparent’ funding formula for individual CFCs has been developed to help target the most vulnerable families.

There will be a detailed staff consultation before any changes are made.

The report says there will be an overall reduction in CFC posts but the County Council will try to avoid any job losses unless absolutely necessary.

Some of the savings from reduced management costs will be used to fund new front-line centre co-ordinator posts.

The County Council will also consult with each Centre Partnership Group to ensure that as many families as possible know that their centre will not be closing, although there may be some changes in the management and staffing.

Peter added: “This consultation will also provide a useful opportunity to obtain the view of parents so that each centre can plan and offer services that respond to local needs and priorities.”

The Children and Young People’s Services Select Committee meets on Wednesday April 20.

Committee Chairman, Richard Burrett, said: “Children and Family Centres are an important resource and a focal point in local communities.

“I am sure that Members of the Committee will welcome the opportunity to examine the principles and proposals for the future management of Children and Family Centres.”

Sussex Bobbies on the Boot with Crawley youths

It all kicked off on Sunday (April 3), for Sussex Police as they were faced with a group of youths in Crawley.

Although this isn’t what you think – the police were playing a football match against young people from the Escape Youth Project in Broadfield.

The event was organised by the West Sussex County Council run Escape Youth Project – a drop-in service, which host youth facilities for 11 to 19 year olds on a Sunday at Broadfield’s youth centre – and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Ashleigh Hanlon.

The football event was also supported by West Sussex County Council Youth Service, Sussex Police, Freedom Leisure, Crawley Borough Council, Rare Range Coaching, who helped with coaching on the day, and local resident group Inspire Broadfield, who provided refreshments on the day.

Around 150 people turned up on Mother’s Day at Crawley’s K2 Leisure Centre to watch the Under 19s beat the force 1-0 in the last 25 seconds of the game, when Levi Austin headed the ball to Terry Sandwell who scored the goal.

Crawley Town FC player Richard Brodie awarded trophies and congratulated players after the match.

Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “This event is a great example of communities working together to help develop young people’s relationships with each other and encourage them to be active.

“Well done to all involved and everyone who went along to support the teams.

“Maybe they’ll be a replay on the cards.”

Ahead of the game with health and wellbeing agenda

West Sussex will be served by a new Health and Wellbeing Board a year early, after being selected as an ‘early implementer’ by the Department for Health.

West Sussex County Council has been working with local partners on proposals in recent months and has now announced the formal establishment of a Board which will meet for the first time in May.

The Boards form part of the Government’s reforms of the NHS and have to be in place everywhere by April 2012.

West Sussex has a strong history of partnership working between the County Council and health organisations, and is setting up a shadow Board a year early.

County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith explained: “We are well placed in West Sussex to meet the proposed health changes and are working closely with our partners.

“Health and wellbeing is a priority for the County Council, and we are at the forefront of local authorities, leading the way on public health. As such, we have been selected as an ‘early implementer’ by the Department of Health.”

Over the next year the shadow Board will help shape the future of the health service in West Sussex as the changes are rolled out nationally, and will help influence key decisions about the future of health provision.

Following the shadow year, the work of the Board will be reviewed and then formally established in April 2012.

Louise added: “Local authorities and the NHS have a strong history of working together in West Sussex. We already jointly commission many of our services together. We have introduced personal budgets for social care and health, and work with districts and boroughs on Health and Wellbeing partnerships across the county.

“Establishing the Board will allow us to move further and faster on the joint working between health, social care and public health for the benefit of residents.”

Early roles for the Board will include giving feedback on NHS West Sussex’s Operating Plan for 2011/12, reviewing plans for jointly commissioned services (mental health, learning disability, drugs and alcohol, children’s services and continuing care) and looking at priorities for West Sussex, and a review of the plans for the £8.9 million of social care funding which has been allocated to NHS West Sussex as part of the Government spending review.

Members of the Board will include representatives from the County Council, District and Borough Councils, voluntary sector, the new GP consortia and health officials.
