Jody is a World Class contender

Friday, November 11th, 2011

On December 4th in a venue in Essex, local kickboxer Jody Blunt could be making her mark for Crawley.

Jody:

Jody has been practicing kickboxing under the watchful eye of trainer Greg Bradbury for eleven years. Jody is match fit and has been hoping to get her break into the world title leagues for some time….and at an event a short while ago all her dreams came true.

A couple of weeks ago Jody defended her British kickboxing title where she defeated the her opponent in the second round. Off the back of this great win Jody was spotted by a promoter who gave her this great opportunity of a World title fight in Essex on the 4th December.

Jody’s Trainer & Manager:

Greg Bradbury had fought for around ten years in different disciplines but found kickboxing his forte, representing Britain in many fights. Greg, who is trainer and manager to Jody told us “Jody has been training with Gatwick Kickboxing for eleven years now and had been involved in semi contact fights for a while then had a break and came back to full contact. Jody has had a number of successful fights which has now led to her being offered a world title fight. The promoter who spotted Jody has been after her for some time now and was going to put her in for a British title but after seeing her perform in person decided she was ready for a world title.

Jody is passing on her skills by teaching a class at Gatwick Kickboxing on a Tuesday night.

The Gatwick Kickboxing Club:

Founded in 1998, the club is open every night of the week and Saturday mornings with classes for all levels of skill. a great way of keeping fit and loosing weight at the same time with a friendly supportive atmosphere. The club has a long history of successful fighters, Jody being just one of them. As well as Jody teaching, they have further British champions teaching on other nights too. For more information please visit their website here.

Jody would like to thank the staff and management at The Pelham Buckle who are her sponsors for this event.

If you would like to go and watch Jody in her World title fight there will be a mini bus put on at a cost of £15 per person. We will give you more information as soon as we get it.

We would like to wish Jody all the best. Jody is donating some of the money raised to Help Our Wounded Royal Marines.

Girls Shine in Oakwood Summer Tournament

Girls Shine in Oakwood Summer Tournament

Oakwood Youth Girls section hosted their second annual all girls six-a-side tournament at the weekend with teams descending on Tinsley Lane from East & West Sussex as well as from out of County.

Thirty teams and over two hundred girls competed from under ten through to under fifteen. Despite some inclement weather, the atmosphere throughout the day was enjoyed by players and spectators alike. In addition to the football the BBQ, bouncy castle and slide, refreshments, professional photographers, raffle for a team kit and a Managers penalty shoot out competition all helped to enhance the enjoyable experience.

The standard of football was outstanding and each league was highly competitive with teams battling it out to come through the group stages into the semi-finals.

Oakwood Youth had a successful competition with the Under 10’s getting all the way to the final only to lose out to a very strong Croydon Borough side. The Under fifteen’s entered two teams and both made it to the semi-final stages. Oakwood Red made it to the final by beating Pevensey and Westham whilst the Oakwood Black team lost their semi to group stage winners Seahaven Harriers. The final between Oakwood Red and Seahaven was a tight game decided by a single goal that meant the hosts finished as runners up.

The highlight of the afternoon for the Oakwood Club was in the under twelve division where the team ran out eventual winners. Having played seven other teams to get to the semi-finals the Girls played local rivals Maidenbower United in a close game that went to extra time and penalties. Oakwood held their nerve to progress to the final against Southdown Tigers. In another close game the winning goal was scored late on by Elese Badjada to win the trophy and send the home support wild.

All trophies were presented by two representatives from Chelsea Ladies, and England internationals, Becky Jane and Shelby Hills.

Jane Kirkham, Oakwood Youth Girls Secretary, said, “This has been a roaring success, both on and off the pitch for Girls football. So many people have commented on a fabulous tournament and the fact that it is one of only a handful of Girls Only tournaments in the County, supported by Chelsea Ladies, has meant a great deal.”

Great success comes from being a cut above the rest

Monday, July 26th, 2010

On Monday 19th July Crawley Happy Times were invited down to Topsy Turvy to speak to Martin Stone about his long standing within the retail community.

On arrival Shelley was greeted by Martin Stone, owner of Topsy Turvy. We were then introduced to Nikki Bedford who was taking on the challenge of transforming Shelley’s hair from a dull lifeless mess into a gorgeous colourful bouncy stylish look.

Shelley's hair before the transformation

Front view of before

Topsy Turvy has been based in Crawley for over thirty five years and is still going strong. So, what is the secret to their success? Well, we believe Martin has alot to do with this. His approach to the staff and clients is quite unique. Martin is always there to help out and advise. Martin runs a training school onsite and has recently won an award for his achievements. Martin told us they had an Ofsted report recently and passed with flying colours. Talking of colours, young Nikki, who transformed Shelley’s hair, is currently taking a Colour Degree which is one of the highest qualification achievable. We wish Nikki all the best, although from our results feel she won’t need it.

Nikki went over the proceedure with Shelley, showing all the different shades of colour that could be used. It was all very informal and relaxed. Nikki told us “I started at Topsy Turvy when I was 14 as a Saturday girl. When I left school I came to the training academy upstairs which was really great. It was nice to be able to work hands on and train in a familiar environment which was then going to be my official work place.”  Nikki went on to tell us “hairdressing was all I wanted to do, so it came quite naturally and I never get bored of it. The best part of my job are my regulars. I get to meet so many lovely people. When they start to come on a regular basis, it’s like having a little family of clients. I have a lady who comes in whenever she is over from America, which I feel is a great compliment.”

Shelley looking very happy with her new look

Shelley looking gorgeous after the transformation

Liam Holland, one of many male sylists working in Topsy Turvy, took one look at our camera man Neil’s hair and suggested he give it a ‘tiday up’. Liam did a great job! Liam told us “men are starting to take alot better care of their hair. I think most find it nice to have a male stylist to chat to. Men deserve pampering just like women do. I love working here, it’s a great atmosphere with lots of different and regular people coming in.”

Our camerman Neil before his transformation

Neil after his transformation. Nice!

Shelley told us of the experience “it was so nice to be pampered and waited upon with cappacino and biscuits. I don’t normally have time to get into town and have my hair done, but I made time for this appointment and am so glad I did. Nikki has exceptional relationship skills and her talent as a stylist is top class. I have felt amazing since. Everyone who has seen me has commented on how gorgeous my hair looks and how it really suits me. I feel like a million dollars and feel this has shown in my appearance more, as I have made more of an effort to look as nicely dressed as my hair so it all matched. It really does give a woman a confidence boost. I love my new look and the colours are beautiful, just right. I love Martin. I have met Martin many times, he is a very active member of the community, doing alot of hands on work with the schools and of course supporting the Youth Awards for many years. I feel Martin’s approach and attitude towards the clients and staff alike has made him such a great success.”

We took footage and pictures for you to experience our wonderful day of pampering. We would like to thank all the staff especially Nikki Bedford and Liam Holland for the great hair make overs of both Shelley and Neil.

It was no emergency, it was a great show!

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

On Saturday 17th July the Fire Station opened it’s doors for the third time to show off all the emergency services under one roof.

On it’s third anniversary, the Emergency Services Open Day was a bigger success than last year with hundreds of people coming along to experience all the great demostrations, gadgets and fun things to do. This year the road was closed to make it a bigger area for the public to roam around in. Demonstrations included the rescue of a car crash victim, a rescue of a man who climbed down a building to get his balloon and ended up being stuck, a home fire awareness demonstration and of course, the exciting dog demonstration.

We were fortunate enough to bump into Mayor Lee Burke and Mayoress Ali Burke who spoke to us about the importance of awareness and educating the public on the hazards of fire and many other dangerous causes of risk. We also got to speak to Andrew Huntley who worked tirelessly to organise this event in conjunction with the other emergency services. We also met Darren Seymour, a firefighter from Worthing who came along to promote their football awareness campaign which they hold in the schools. We spoke to lots of wonderful people so please watch the videos to see what they had to say and there is plenty more for you to view. Enjoy! (May we add the videos are not the greatest, but we are striving to make it alot better for you. We ask for your patience while getting it just right).

We here at Crawley Happy Times would like to thank Andrew Huntley for the kind invitation and to congratulate everyone involved for putting on yet another superb community event. We look forward to next year.

Against all odds

Steve Littler is a determined gentleman on a mission to complete his first marathon.

Steve, Area Manager for Bishops Move in Crawley, is in training to run the Neolithical Marathan. This is a twenty six mile run from Avebury to Stone Henge. Why is Steve any different to any other runner, we hear you ask. Well, Steve sprained his ankle seven weeks ago and was originally told he would not be ready for the marathon in May. Instead of getting down about his situation, Steve made sure he gave his ankle as much rest as he could, then was back on his feet, determined to participate. Steve is raising money for a charity which has effected everyone at some time in their lives, including Steve. St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised support to local people and their families, friends and carers.

Steve attended Crawley Hospital’s walk in centre and told Shelley he was very impressed and pleased with the service he received. Crawley Hospital has always been portrayed in a negative light, so it was refreshing to hear Steve speak so highly of the staff and the hospital itself.

The twenty six mile marathon will be the first for Steve, who is not joined to any clubs but trains with family and friends. His wife just completed the London Marathon in a great time. Steve is hoping to complete this with his wife next year. We wish them both all the best for that. Crawley Happy Times would like to wish Steve all the best for his marathon, and we look forward on reporting Steve’s achievement.

If you would like to sponsor Steve please go here…

When Steve is not working or training for the marathon, he can be found playing bass guitar in a band called Flip The Bird. Our thanks goes to Neil Palfreyman for allowing us to use these great pictures :-)

Shelley spoke to Steve about his trials and trivializations whilst preparing for such a feat.

Is it a Rumba, no it’s Zumba!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Crawley Happy Times have been invited to the launch of the new Zumba dance class, so decided to take a look at what we were letting ourselves in for.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is a latin inspired dance fitness class.

The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.

The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba class.

In the past years, the Zumba program has become nothing short of a revolution, spreading like wildfire, and positioning itself as the single most influential movement in the industry of fitness.

As of July 2009, the Zumba program is being taught at over 50,000 locations in 75 countries, has sold millions of DVDs, and has changed the lives of Zumba fanatics worldwide with an astonishing six million participants taking Zumba classes every week.

Participants pump there legs, windmill there arms, gyrate their hips, clap their hands, dip, slide and spin – all to a frenzied beat.

Who will be teaching us?

Joanne Cooper and Sarah Cubitt are old friends who share the passion for dance and fitness. Sarah teaches Body Pump, Body Jam with qualifications in lots of other areas (aerobics, aqua etc). Sarah works as a primary school teacher in Horley during the day. Sarah has a two children. Her daughter attends classes and wishes to gain her Zumba qualification like her mum. Joanne also works during the day and looks after two children but feels running the Zumba classes fits nicely around her lifestyle. Joanne and Sarah have never taught together but felt this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

What should we wear?

Wear your trainers and bring plenty of water. You will need it to drink, but more importantly to throw over your feet when they are set on fire!

Where and when are the classes being held?

The launch is at Maidenbower Community Centre on Tuesday 2nd March 7.45pm ’till 8:30pm and is FREE to all who attend. The usual cost is £5.00 per session. The classes will run on a weekly basis.

Bring some friends and join the party!

Fitness is just a donation away

Sussex Bootcamps are making it a priority to help those less fortunate than them over the Xmas period. And this is how they are doing it.

On Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th and Friday 18th December, Sussex Bootcamps are offering free sessions to their fitness classes for anyone who is interested. The only requirement is to bring some food to be donated to Open House in Three Bridges.

We spoke to Ben, senior instructor at Sussex Bootcamps who told us “We wanted to give something back to the community for all the support they have given us over the last year so we decided to do three free sessions which would help others in return. All you need to do is just bring some food and you can workout at Sussex’s leading fitness Bootcamp on December 14th, 16th And 18th for free.  We are calling it “Turkey-Busting Workouts” because the session will burn off those pre Christmas calories. All food donations are going to Crawley Open House, Emmaus Homeless Charity, Brighton and Burgess Hill District Lions Club. We’re planning on making this an annual tradition here, as Christmas is such a wonderful family and friends occasion, and a time to show our appreciation for all we have, especially our health”.

Sussex Bootcamps Turkey-Busting Workouts are open to all Sussex residents and their family and friends on Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th ,and Friday 18th December in : -

  • Haywards Heath (6.15am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 6.15pm and 7.15pm
  • Horsham (6.15am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 6.15pm and 7.15pm)
  • Crawley (6.15pm and 7.15pm)

All Camps are 45 minutes long and you can attend every session that week, two sessions or just the one. We understand that this time of year is probably your busiest so it’s up to you how many session you want to do.

The worshipful the Mayor Brenda Burgess is going to make a guest appearance at the session on Monday 14th December at Hazelwick School on the 6.15pm session, joining in on the training. Open House is the Mayor’s chosen charity so was happy to join in for this great cause. Ben said “we are really looking forward to seeing Mayor Brenda Burgess on Monday. We feel it is a great cause and really appreciate the Mayor’s support and participation”.

Shelley from Crawley Happy Times will also be attending the three free sessions, so do register your place soon!

Please visit here to register your interest and save your place. Spaces are restricted so please register as soon as you can.

It’s a blast

Ben told us “As you can see, everyone has a blast at Sussex Bootcamps regardless of age and fitness level.  And we’ll make sure you do too.  There’s no need to be anxious about coming to camp if you’re a little out of shape, we’re not going to make you do anything crazy – that would just defeat the purpose.

All we want you to do is come out and have fun, burn off some pre Christmas calories, and feel great while helping those who could use some help this Christams (just one can of food goes a long way)”.

Because NOTHING makes you feel better, more alive and more engaged (so you can really enjoy your Christams) than getting your body moving and your heart pumping…and helping those less fortunate at the same time.

Here is some footage of previous classes, which are a lot of fun as well as being good for your health.

A very Merry Christmas from all at Sussex Bootcamps :-)

Get fit with Sussex Bootcamps

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Sussex Bootcamps have successfully built a new way of exercising and have altered peoples approach to ‘getting fit’.

Boxing is great exercise and loads of fun

Boxing is great exercise and loads of fun

Seven weeks ago Becky Fuller and Shelley (me) decided to join Ben Davis of Sussex Bootcamps on a four week training regime.

Becky wanted to loose weight after having her second child.  Shelley is on a sponsored diet to make money for the work required on the playground at her son’s school.  Two good reason to attend.

At first it was really hard as exercise came in the form of lifting the glass up to the mouth or walking to the shops.  But as time went on it became surprisingly addictive.

When and where did they do this?

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 18:15 at Hazelwick School in Three Bridges. The cost is £110. Now why would you not just go to the gym I hear you you ask.  For many reasons. The support and encouragement you receive from the instructors and fellow members is just something you do not find in a gym. Becky and Shelley made friends with the rest of the group which really helped them in their quest for weight loss.  Becky said “you all go through the same gruelling sessions together. Both Shelley & I found it motivational and inspiring. I have lost a total of one and a half stone and can fit into clothes I didn’t think I would ever fit into again. It was worth every penny”.

Shelley decided to keep a short diary of how the four weeks went and how she felt about each session.

Bootcamp Journal

Monday 3rd August – Day 1

Before: - Feeling a bit nervous about tonight, anxious even.  Can’t let anyone down!  Worrying I won’t be able to keep up, and will end up a mess on the floor.  Have made a pact, no alcohol for the whole 4 weeks.  This is going to be tough.

After: – Well that wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.  The exercises are no too bad.  My wrists ache a bit due to my arthritis but I refuse to make an issue out of it.  No aching yet.  Did I push myself enough?  I think so.  Basic exercises, sit ups, skipping, running and plenty of great toning exercises.

Wednesday 5th August – Day 2

Before: - Not so anxious this time.  We are a group made up of woman bar 1 man and everyone has been really nice so that makes it easier to turn up again.  Been working in the sun all day so feeling a bit tired.

After:- Damn!  That was really hard today.  My thighs are killing me.  I feel so much worse than I did after Monday.  That will teach me for taking it so lightly.  We did the same exercises performed on Monday so I was shocked at how much it took out of me.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will get easier.  Don’t want to get fearful of going.  What is it they say, no pain no gain.  Damn them poets!  Felt a bit faint today but put that down to the heat I had been in most of the day.  Didn’t drink as much water as I should have.  On a good note the rest of the group are lovely and we get to move around to meet and work with others in the group. We are all gelling already, and I love that. Ben, the trainer, gave us a nutritional talk and put the whole protein, carbohydrates, fats into perspective for me.  He made it sound so easy to understand.  I needed that lol.

Friday 7th August – Day 3

Before: – My legs are still killing me! Today is boxing day which I think will be better on my poor body right now.  I feel a little apprehensive but am focusing on the fact it is only four weeks, not four months or years.  Makes me feel better.  Have done well the last couple of days on my diet so am feeling a bit better about it all.  Just ache, badly.

After: – Did I say boxing was going to be easy?  Well how wrong was I!  I perspired profusely with this exercise, but I was not alone.  Ben worked us as hard as usual but always reassuring us we only had to work as hard as we could and no harder.  We are all working as a ‘team’ and encouraging each other, which really helps.  I had a great time today.  It was tough but felt good and was lots of fun with the other participants.  Getting back to feeling excited about the next session again.  Still hurting but not so much.

Monday 10th August – Day 4

Before: – Feel a little more confident today but have a bad headache. Not feeling my best to be honest. But I am still going. Can’t let the ‘team’ down.

After:-It was mainly jumping about today in some form or another. The skipping is great fun but I get so breathless doing it. Found my shin bone was painful to touch after this session. I am sure it will go away and was just a cause of all the jumping, which my poor little body has not done for some years lol.

Wednesday 12th August – Day 5

Before:- Not feeling well at all today. Been diagnosed with potential swine flu so have to miss tonight. Should be ok for Friday as I have been unwell for a while now, so if I do have it, it should be non-contagious by now.  Just hope I have not passed it onto any of the ‘team’.

Friday 14th August – Day 6

Before: – Still feeling a bit rough but must get back into the swing of things, or this feeling might consume me!

After: - Couldn’t interact completely today.  It was boxing again, which I really enjoy, but had to sit out of some of the turns due to my breathlessness and lack of energy. Damn, must get well again.

Monday 17th August – Day 7

Before: – Feeling a bit better today. Looking forward to seeing how much I can manage to be honest. Still feeling a bit flu-ey. Just got to get rid of this silly cough now. Plenty of water consumed, ready for the session.

After: – Ben was absent today so was ably subbed by Steven.  It was different but quite refreshing. Funny enough the time seemed to fly by on this session. Not sure if this had something to do with a different trainer. Maybe it was because I am slowly getting better. Who knows. Enjoyed the session, not aching so much now.

Wednesday 19th August – Day 8

Before:- Feeling a lot better today and really looking forward to today’s training. It’s nice to know Ben is back. Not that we missed him of course….lol. The ‘team’ is really starting to gel now. We have been through so much together in such a short amount of time. So I also look forward to seeing everyone.

After: -It was a really hard training session today. Lots of up and down, push ups, burpees, running and various other excruciating exercises. If this had been our first day, we would never have been able to cope, so it is amazing how far we have all actually come. The ‘team’ all looked shattered. We had a chat after about how much better we are looking mind you, and how better we all feel, keeping to a healthy eating regime and the exercises chopping inches of our waist lines. It is starting to get addictive. Am I crazy, probably.

Friday 21st August – Day 9

Before: – Looking forward to the session once again. Feeling 100 times better, cough subsided. The enthusiasm comes from the results, not the actual training. I have been able to put tops on that would not even go past my chubby shoulders in the past. When you can see the results, it really hits home at how good it is and how good I feel.

After:- Phew!  Another week over and done with. Only one more week to go. Yhipee!!  We were inside for the first time today, raining.  Sophie was our trainer for today as Ben was bunking off again lol. Boxing today.  Think I may have damaged a muscle in my shoulder today. Really hurt, but I was brave. Love the boxing so it was not too much of an effort to persevere. Went home soaked with perspiration again. Time for a cold shower.

Monday 24th August – Day 10

Before: – I can’t believe I have made it to the last week in one piece! It has been such a great adventure and I am looking and feeling great! Can’t wait to get there today. Shoulder is still a bit niggled but I will be fine and take it easy.

After: – Loads of different training exercises today. Lots of sit-ups and leg work. Starting to adore skipping!  I remember when we first did skipping, I was so out of breath I found it hard, but as time has gone on my breathing seems to have gained in endurance. Had a laugh with the others again today, which makes it all so that much easier.

Wednesday 26th August – Day 11

Before:- My shoulder is killing me today. Had to pop to the doctors yesterday. Got some Ibuleve Gel which has helped some.  Think it was having the window down in the car on the way home last week, the breeze encouraged my arthritis to play up. Hate getting old! Dreading not being able to keep up today.

After: – That was hard work, but I feel so fit now. Had trouble doing some of the exercises which included the arms but didn’t let myself down with any of the others. The bond between the group is so great and appreciated, letting the group down is not an option, for me anyway. I am sure no-one would think anything if I wasn’t able to, or for any other members either, but of course the relationship we all have means they would have encouraged me if I needed it. Nice. Can’t wait for Friday, but feel a little sad the 4 weeks are over and I may not get to see the others again :-(

Friday 28th August – day 12 FINAL DAY!

Before: – Feeling excited and sad at the same time as this is our last day. I have already made my mind up that I am going to come back for another 4 weeks. Mad, yes. Fit, very!!!

After:- Wow! 4 weeks of gruelling exciting bootcamp completed. I have dropped at least one and a half dress sizes, especially on my hips and thighs, and feel fantastic!  All I have to say to anyone now is…..can’t wait for the next 4 weeks to start!! Bring on the 7th October! :-)

Shelley is now into her third week of the next four weeks regime and is still going strong.

This sounds great! When is the next one?
