OPEN AIR THEATRE

Come outside and enjoy the arts in Crawley this summer

It feels like summer is almost here and to celebrate the return of the warm weather

The Hawth’s programme is going alfresco with four theatrical productions stepping

out of the theatre and taking to various outdoor sites in Crawley. So grab a blanket and a picnic and join us for some summer fun.

On Tuesday 28 June at 7.30pm the award-winning and ever-popular Illyria return to The Hawth Amphitheatre with Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. In its 20th year, Illyria present this story of a shipwreck – Viola is washed ashore in a country where everything is illogical, delirious, and completely topsy turvy. It could all end in tears – even if most of them are of laughter.

The ever-popular company return to Crawley, this time to Goff’s Park, on Wednesday 3 August 6.30pm with Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood.

All Mr Fox wants from life is to feed his family, and farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean have an ample supply of chickens, geese and ducks. But they are also the cruellest, meanest and most ruthless farmers you could ever meet, and they are determined to put a stop to Mr Fox once and for all. Mr Fox’s chances are slim at best…or will the sharpest wit win?

Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic opera, Pirates of Penzance is brought to life on Thursday 11 August at 7.30pm in the Amphitheatre. Illyria deliver another first for the UK open-air touring theatre circuit packed with laughter, romance and a galleon-full of memorable lyrics. This wonderful operetta is faithfully performed by a reduced cast and accompanied by a Musical Director on keyboard and actor/musicians on various instruments.

Rounding off the summer in the Amphitheatre is Pitchy Breath Theatre with

The Wind in the Willows on Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 August. Crawley’s community theatre present Kenneth Grahame’s classic following the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger and of course, the jovial but big-headed Mr. Toad! A great family favourite that will transport you to the river bank.

Tickets for Illyria’s three shows are £12 (discounts £9) each. Pitchy Breath’s Wind in the Willows is £7.50 (discounts: £6/Family of Four: £22).

To make it easy for you to get out and enjoy the sunshine and theatre we have an amazing SUMMER SAVER OFFER! Book any two or more of these performances and save 10%

Tickets can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or you can book online at www.hawth.co.uk.

Stroke and Health Awareness Day 2011

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Date: Saturday 9th April 2011

Venue: The Bandstand, Queens Square, Crawley

The event: Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club Stroke and Health Awareness Day

Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club have again joined forces with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb)  for this Year’s Event.

South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) paramedic and Clinical Operations Manager for Crawley, Dave Atkins said: “Strokes devastate the lives of thousands of people across our region every year and SECAmb are pleased to be able to support local awareness raising events. If someone suspects a person has suffered a stroke they should call 999 immediately. The sooner we get to someone who may have suffered a stroke the sooner we can get them to the specialist care they need”

High Blood Pressure can affect people of ALL AGES and most do not know they have a problem till it is TOO LATE.

It is better to be safe than sorry so please come along for your FREE Blood Pressure Test between 10am and 4pm.

In 2008 when we did the same event during the two hour event 35 men and woman of all ages had a blood pressure check carried out by medical professionals. Five had higher than usual blood pressure and were encouraged to visit their GP for further checks.  This equates to nearly 15% of those tested.

We ran our second ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ event on Saturday 17th April 2010 with alarming results. During the event 54 men and woman of all ages had a blood pressure check carried out by the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb). Ten had higher than usual blood pressure and were encouraged to visit their GP for further checks.  The percentage referred in 2010 was 20% a 25% increase on 2008.

Drama unfurled towards the end of the 2010 event when a visitor from Coulsden dropped in for a routine check.

After making the necessary checks and an ECG phone calls then triggered an ambulance being called and the visitor being rushed to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Rotary Know Your Blood Pressure Day 2011 will see over 400 Rotary clubs taking to the high streets to take the public’s blood pressure.

On average, the awareness day sees around 13,500 people step up to have their blood pressure taken, with just under 3,000 being advised to see their GP for more tests and a further 196 urged to seek medical advice immediately. It’s fair to say that over the years, this event has prevented thousands of people suffering the sometimes fatal and often disabling consequences of a stroke.

Rotary Know Your Blood Pressure Day is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to help people better understand the relation between high blood pressure (hypertension) and stroke. It is estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the U.K each year could be prevented. This condition can easily be controlled.

Rotary recognises that one of the biggest challenges is to help people understand that strokes don’t just happen to other people. They can happen to anyone, at any age and the biggest single risk is high blood pressure. Rotarian volunteers play an invaluable role in reaching out to people, encouraging them to have regular checks and take action when needed.

Rotary clubs run their blood pressure check events in church halls, supermarkets, shopping centres, libraries and leisure centres, usually assisted by a small team of health professionals, perhaps a GP or practice nurse.

Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour 2011

The council is urging Crawley people to do their bit for the planet this week and switch off for Earth Hour.

Crawley Borough Council already has a policy to switch off lights in its buildings across town and now it’s asking residents to switch off for an hour between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday (March 26).

Councillor Keith Blake, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “We’ve been switching off the lights in all our buildings every night since 2003. Crawley Council is working hard to make sure it considers the environment in all its activities.

“Last year we reduced our carbon emissions by five per cent, this year we’re aiming for 10 per cent with a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.

“We’ve commissioned some highly eco-friendly buildings recently, like the new Bewbush Centre, the new homes currently being built in Rushetts Place, Langley Green, and the Retrofit project which is reducing carbon emissions from four existing council properties by 80 per cent.

“We’re now looking at making existing buildings ever more efficient while making greater use of renewable energy such as Solar PV”

Earth hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

2010 saw the biggest Earth Hour yet with 128 countries and territories joining the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific and Europe to Africa and the Americas switched off.

This year WWF, the organisation behind Earth Hour, want people to go beyond the hour and think about what else they can do to make a difference.

For more information and to show your support to Earth Hour visit http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk

Ambition for Leisure and Culture

Ambition for Leisure and Culture

The Crawley Borough Council budget approved on 23rd February

provided the sound financial footing needed to develop Crawley’s future

leisure and cultural offer

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural

Services, comments, “We have a fantastic leisure and cultural offer in

Crawley and we aim to improve this even further.  Tilgate Park is one of

Crawley’s gems and we see further potential pursuits for residents and

visitors.  We have allocated £500,000 in the recent budget for spend-to-

save initiatives across our parks and open spaces.”

We will be looking to bring the former Bluebird Pub back into use and

introduce new features such as Go-Ape in the forest and boating on the

lakes.  The Walled Garden and Nature Centre can also be improved

and provide an even more entertaining day out.”

The Hawth Theatre is also being reviewed so as to deliver even more for

its diverse audiences.

Councillor Lenny Walker sees great additional potential in The Hawth

which will remain firmly in Council ownership, “We will review how The

Hawth is run while treating today’s offer as the minimum baseline that we

wish to improve upon.  There may be opportunities for new investment

such as increasing the capacity of the main theatre and making more

use of the less well-known amphitheatre.  Feedback from the public is

that we should review the programme of shows and we have taken this

on board.  In doing so, we will continue to provide an eclectic mix of arts

and culture, supported by a strong commitment to community arts

development.”

The grass isn’t always greener – sometimes it’s blue!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The grass isn’t always greener – sometimes it’s blue!

Bluegrass that is! The Hawth has two fantastic nights of music coming up. The first is blue grass at it’s very best and the second in blues from one of the best guitarists in the world. Read on to find out more:

American duo Jeff and Vida head to The Hawth Studio on Tuesday 5th April at 8.15pm.

Vida’s powerful vocals and driving 1942 Gibson J-45 guitar with Jeff’s rock-n-roll approach to mandolin and guitar will get the crowds feet stomping, and “is about as perfect a combination as you’re likely to find.”

After nine years of performing and songwriting the pairs music delves into country, honky-tonk, rockabilly, even a little rock and roll. But throughout bluegrass has remained a key influence in their style and sound. Their combination of incisive songwriting, high energy arrangements, and gritty vocals stand out from much of contemporary string band music.

Then on Thursday 7th April at 8.15pm in The Hawth Studio, Aynsley Lister returns

with a solo performance (replacing the advertised performance by Stefan Grossman). Aynsley has been listed by Guitarist Magazine as one of the world’s greatest blues guitarists. He was one of only a handful of British guitarists to be included, other names mentioned were Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Gary Moore, so he is in impressive company.

In a recent issue of Classic Rock magazine, they recommended ten blues/rock artists capable of taking the genre of music to the highest level. Among those suggested were The White Stripes, John Mayer, Jonny Lang and Joe Bonamassa – The only British or European act in their top ten? Aynsley Lister.

Tickets for each gig are £13 (discounts £11) and are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or you can book online at www.hawth.co.uk.

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA

Return to The Hawth

English Touring Opera returns to The Hawth, Crawley with an exciting programme featuring the UK première tour of an opera based on Roald Dahl’s book, Fantastic Mr Fox by Tobias Picker alongside rarely-performed masterpieces by Mozart and Puccini.

Fantastic Mr Fox (Thur 31 March, 7pm, performed in English) explores the relationship between man and nature – pitting three farmers and their digger (played by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Fiona Kimm) against a fox and his family. Cunning to the last, Mr Fox (played by exciting young baritone Nicholas Merryweather) devises a plan to “outfox” the blundering villains.

The production, directed by ETO’s award-winning artistic associate Tim Yealland, features professional soloists alongside 21 local school children from St Andrews C of E Primary School, Furnace Green who play a skulk of fox cubs and a chorus of trees. ETO’s production is the UK première of the full version of Tobias Picker’s adaptation of Roald Dahl short story, with a libretto by Donald Sturrock.

On Friday 1 April, 7.30pm, ETO presents a performance featuring two, one-hour long Puccini operas performed in Italian/English subtitles. These two short works, Il tabarro and Gianni Schicchi are Puccini’s most perfect and perfectly contrasting masterpieces. Il tabarro is a moody, grotesque thriller that takes place on barge in Paris and Gianni Schicchi, a sparkling Florentine comedy.

Completing the Spring season in Crawley is La clemenza di Tito on Saturday 2 April at 7.30pm, a bold production of a rarely-performed masterpiece by Mozart (performed in English /a captioned performance). ETO has a proud history of presenting exceptional productions of Mozart at The Hawth, the last being The Marriage of Figaro in spring last year. Bringing this colourful production to Crawley is a cast of fearless singers, including Julia Riley (acclaimed in ETO’s past production of Anna Bolena) playing Sesto, who is torn between his loyalty to the emperor Titus (Mark Wilde) and his love for Vitellia (Gillian Ramm).

Tickets: £27, £16.50 (discounts: £25). Book for two operas: £42, book for three operas: £60.

Fantastic Mr Fox: Schools: £9 each, Family of three: £40.50, Family of four: £50.

State of the Borough Debate

More than 120 people came to Crawley’s fifth State of the Borough Debate last night (Wednesday February 2).

The annual debate, which was held in Crawley Library, began with a short presentation by Councillor Bob Lanzer, Leader of Crawley Borough Council, looking back at the past year.

Successes included the opening of both Bewbush and Langley Green centres, the town and Let’s FACE it! winning Britain in Bloom awards, crime falling again, Manor Royal regeneration, flood alleviation, eco-houses and 10:10.

Councillor Lanzer was joined by Councillors Duncan Crow and Brenda Smith, both borough and county councillors. Crawley District Commander Chief Inspector Steve Curry, Dr Amit Bhargava and Crawley’s Youth Mayor Pravin Sanasy completed the panel.

Audience members asked many questions and raised many views with the panel, including:

• Parking on grass verges

• A new hospital

• Controlled Parking Zones and Civil Parking Enforcement

• Capacity at K2 Crawley

• Potential for a park and ride scheme

• Disabled access at K2 Crawley

• Improvements to Three Bridges Station car park

• Community arts and The Hawth.

The views and comments expressed will help the council to plan its work on improving its services and the town in general.

Councillor Lanzer said: “These debates are a great opportunity for politicians to hear what residents and business people think of the town and help inform our decision making.

“This debate was the best yet and it has given us another opportunity to find out what audience members think is important when it comes to council services, as well as those of Sussex Police, the NHS and services for young people. I’d like to thank everyone who came along.”

Half Term Treats at The Hawth

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The Hawth has three treats in store for families looking for some half term fun, there’s crazy clowning, mad hatters and even a cat who saves the day.

On Thursday 24th February at 6.30pm those crazy Ukrainians from Paperworld are back! Mimirichi return to The Hawth with a completely new show, Plastic Fantastic. Fast-paced physical comedy, hilarious slapstick and buckets of mayhem, nothing compares to the pure joy that is Mimirichi. Plastic Fantastic includes mind-blowingly original origami that can turn a pile of coloured cellophane into almost anything, physical horseplay, quick-fire mime and downright silliness. These clowns are Ukrainian, unique, utterly bonkers and guaranteed to thrill the whole family.

The next day (Friday 25th February) at 4pm The Hawth Studio plays host to Oxfordshire Theatre Company’s brand new musical version of Alice In Wonderland for children aged 6 plus. Inquisitive Alice leads audiences down the rabbit hole into a mysterious wonderland of the imagination to discover curious creatures, puzzling people and unravel marvellous mathematical mysteries. The show combines puppetry, song and dance to create a world where nothing is quite as it seems and you never know who’ll pop up next!

Finally children aged 4 plus can look forward to The Mousehole Cat in The Studio on Saturday 26 February, 11am. Inspired by an old folk legend of the Cornish village of Mousehole, where a brave cat and an old fisherman battle a storm that has been raging for weeks this delightful show is based on the award-winning book by Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley.
