On Friday 22nd July in the town centre of Crawley we were treated to a demonstration by the Crawley In Motion team.
Fired up by every-day adult non-dancers, with choreography by Shaun Angel, an enthusiastic camera man and editor Ben Murray and a great bunch of local young people, the Flash Mob demonstrated the essence of ‘Crawley in Motion’ – to mix art with sport, to inspire, volunteer, get involved and enhance activities planned, as we head towards the Olympic year, 2012!
Animating an open space, with dancers and non dancers alike, the intention was to film the event to promote events over the coming year, launching this year’s Open Weekend. Promoted through a Flash Mob website, word of mouth and email, group rehearsals took place at the Civic Hall, The Hawth Studio, HBG Ifield gym and K2 Crawley with practice video clips on YouTube to learn at home.
The group included non-dancers of all ages, from local authority, Freedom Leisure at K2 Crawley, HBG Fitness, Ginger Moo, local musicians and inspirational input from independent parkour enthusiasts and professional dancers from both Shaun Angel and Andy Moore’s dance troops.
Participants gathered from 4pm, shopped, walked and talked, drank a coffee… The Hawth technical team wheeled a mobile sound system to the bandstand at 4.20pm and on hearing the music, Drew Ratcliff and Jordan Nesbitt crossed the square with well rehearsed breath-taking gymnastic moves which signalled the group to join in. The impressive routine ended with everyone dispersing from the square to the sounds of cheers from spectators.
Everyone who took part volunteered their time. Shaun Angel commented “I was really pleased to be asked to help. My students loved being part of an exciting project like this – and I’m making links with other local dance troops to grow the project with the Crawley in Motion team!”
Video footage and photos will be shown on Go! Crawley’s facebook page promoting activities for young people – www.facebook.com/gocrawley and on CBC website promoting Crawley in Motion.
‘Crawley in Motion’ is led by Crawley Borough Council comprising committee members from sports, arts and community and business departments, Freedom Leisure at K2 Crawley, HBG Fitness, Crawley Schools Partnership, CVS. The committee aim is to ensure that Crawley residents are directly involved in celebration and activity surrounding London 2012 – and to encourage everyone to get involved!

Crawley Fleadh 2011 now in its seventh year is as much about cultural awareness as well as education and entertainment and will introduce visitors to Celtic culture through a Ceili Night with history and language lectures and Irish film shows. There are tin whistle and bodhrán classes and an Irish cookery course also programmed. Music and dance workshops are also scheduled to add to this unique mix. We are also involved with some of the Crawley schools with story telling in the junior schools and Celtic design and art and design in the upper ones
Crawley Happy Times were invited by The Hawth to watch the show, and what a great one it is this year!
With Craig Revel Horwood playing the part of Queen Lucretia, Ben James-Ellis playing Prince Harry, Zoe Doano as Snow White and local man Jon Clegg as Muddles, we believe it was one of the best we have seen.
We were privileged enough to attend the after party on the first day and got to speak to and meet the cast of the show. Craig was a true gentleman and happy to chat to the people attending.
Last night, after a meeting at the Hawth, we bumped into Craig and his lovely Mum and gave them a lift as they were about to walk to the hotel. It was very cold and we were not about to watch them walk. Once again Craig was nothing less than polite, friendly and very appreciative.
We would like to congratulate the cast, creative team, production team and the musicians for an excellent team effort. If you have not seen this show yet, what are you waiting for?
You can book tickets by calling The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or goto www.hawth.co.uk
The pictures below include some taken by the Hawth on our behalf with the cast on stage and their visit to the library in Crawley, and of course some of our meeting with the cast.
On Saturday 6th November Three Bridges Football Club once again put on a spectacular fireworks display for all to enjoy. We went along to take some photos and footage for you to enjoy.
We would like to thank Three Bridges Football Club (especially Steve Evans) for their generous donation of a family ticket, won by Emma Hayward-Smith who gave the correct answer to our competition question. Also thank you for allowing us to display our banners on the pitch for the evening
We would also like to thank ‘Snooze’ and ‘The Age of Tapes’ for their performance before the fireworks display.

We would also like to thank Emma Hayward-Smith and her family for the lovely gift to Callum. Anita Parker was the original winner of the family ticket but on the day of the fireworks her son, Callum was very unwell, so we had to give them to the next entrant, which was Emma and her family. Emma gave little Callum a gift to help him get better. How nice was that! xx

The Hawth Crawley is delighted to announce that it has secured a grant of £99,999 supported by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England to develop and promote Going Global II, an audience development programme designed to offer audiences culturally diverse and international work in Crawley over the next two years.
Going Global II will give The Hawth the chance to further its programme of culturally diverse and international performances. The theatre will continue to showcase South Asian and African-Caribbean work while developing programming for emerging communities including Eastern European and Portuguese. The grant will also enable The Hawth to commission and co-produce culturally diverse work specifically for children to enjoy and to bring diverse communities together.
Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services at Crawley Borough Council, said: “This is fantastic news and I’m delighted that we will be offering even more culturally diverse and international work at The Hawth. I hope the securing of this funding and the new programme enables more people to experience the arts locally.”
Sally Abbott, Regional Director, Arts Council England, said: “The Arts Council believes that the arts should be enjoyed by as many people as possible, and a project that seeks to widen engagement fits in with our mission of great art for everyone. We are delighted to be supporting this project and look forward to seeing people across Crawley enjoying the arts.”
Shows already set to attract the crowds include Tavaziva Dance’s Wild Dog capturing the beauty and elegance of Africa as part of Black History Month, The Jingle Dress which will transport little ones to Native America and there will be breathtaking dance in The Shiver which combines classical Indian dance and poetry by acclaimed poet and playwright Lemn Sissay. In the coming years The Hawth hopes to engage almost 200 artists, performers and theatre companies in order to attract new audiences with shows and workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience different cultures and create links with different communities.
This grant has also created an exciting new role at The Hawth as the theatre are now looking for an Audience Development Assistant to actively promote Going Global and co-ordinate community projects for the next two years. Anyone interested in the role can express an interest by emailing info@hawth.co.uk for more information.
On Sunday 29th August the 15th annual Irish Festival kicked off in style.
Attended by many including the Mayor Lee Burke and Mayoress Ali Burke, the event was well organised and continued without a hitch…..oh except the downpour! Ok, so it rained for about an hour, but let us tell you, this did not stop the party. In fact, the ‘after rain’ show was probably more eventful than the morning when the skies were dark. The sun shone and blue skies covered us like a warm blanket. The wet dried up and the air filled with the smell of a summers day. We had our tent (until the wind blew it away of course) where the CHT cam was well received. You can view all the videos on CHT.TV
Crawley Happy Times was privileged to be a part of this great event including the launch night at the Emerald Club. We took some pictures which we hope will tell the story on our behalf, and of course video of some of the performers.
We would like to say a big well done to all involved and to all who performed and danced, and of course to those who attended.

Oakwood Youth Girls section hosted their second annual all girls six-a-side tournament at the weekend with teams descending on Tinsley Lane from East & West Sussex as well as from out of County.
Thirty teams and over two hundred girls competed from under ten through to under fifteen. Despite some inclement weather, the atmosphere throughout the day was enjoyed by players and spectators alike. In addition to the football the BBQ, bouncy castle and slide, refreshments, professional photographers, raffle for a team kit and a Managers penalty shoot out competition all helped to enhance the enjoyable experience.
The standard of football was outstanding and each league was highly competitive with teams battling it out to come through the group stages into the semi-finals.
Oakwood Youth had a successful competition with the Under 10’s getting all the way to the final only to lose out to a very strong Croydon Borough side. The Under fifteen’s entered two teams and both made it to the semi-final stages. Oakwood Red made it to the final by beating Pevensey and Westham whilst the Oakwood Black team lost their semi to group stage winners Seahaven Harriers. The final between Oakwood Red and Seahaven was a tight game decided by a single goal that meant the hosts finished as runners up.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Oakwood Club was in the under twelve division where the team ran out eventual winners. Having played seven other teams to get to the semi-finals the Girls played local rivals Maidenbower United in a close game that went to extra time and penalties. Oakwood held their nerve to progress to the final against Southdown Tigers. In another close game the winning goal was scored late on by Elese Badjada to win the trophy and send the home support wild.
All trophies were presented by two representatives from Chelsea Ladies, and England internationals, Becky Jane and Shelby Hills.
Jane Kirkham, Oakwood Youth Girls Secretary, said, “This has been a roaring success, both on and off the pitch for Girls football. So many people have commented on a fabulous tournament and the fact that it is one of only a handful of Girls Only tournaments in the County, supported by Chelsea Ladies, has meant a great deal.”
Fancy yourself as a film star? Then audition for a new movie written by Crawley residents
Young residents tackle extremism head on
A film about extremism written by Crawley residents is being planned – and if you’re a budding movie star don’t miss the auditions next week.
Crossed Paths has been written by young Crawley residents who were previously involved in the cult local feature film, RH11.
The film follows the stories of Cutch and Yousif, as they become embroiled in the controlling underworld of violent extremism.
Callum Johnston, RH11 director and co-writer of this project, said: “Since finishing RH11 I have been regularly asked about future film projects by budding Crawley actors.
“Well, this is a chance for those people to step up and work on a genuinely exciting project.”
The writers hope to involve a cast of mainly local residents and will be holding auditions at the Town Hall on Tuesday August 25 from 12.30-8.30pm.
The young residents are being supported at every stage by independent film production company Compulsive Productions.
Dan Musty, Director of Compulsive Productions, said: “The young writing team has been inspirational in the amount of time and effort they’ve put into this script and I hope that local residents will support this production with a strong turn out for the auditions.”
For more information on Crossed Paths and to register for the auditions visit the Crossed Paths Facebook group or email dan@compulsiveproductions.com or adam.welton@crawley.gov.uk

Crawley Happy Times were invited down to meet the Topaz Baton Twirling Team at St Johns Church in Crawley to see what they are all about.
Jenny Johnson, Corps Director and Jodie O’Shaughnessy, Trainer, were there to greet us and introduce us to the team of baton twirlers. Jenny started baton twirling when she was just ten years old. Jenny went on to introduce her daughter to baton twirling when she was just three.
What is baton twirling?
Baton twirling is an international sport involving the movement of a metal rod while performing a rhythmic routine. The sport is enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels and is thought to have evolved from the practice of rifle twirling at army parades. Governed by two recognized organizations, the World Baton Twirling Federation and the World Twirling Association, twirlers can compete in various events at the World Championships and International Cup. Baton twirling is a recognized sport involving the balance and movement of a baton while performing a rhythmic, gymnastic-like routine. SOURCE:
Who can attend the Topaz Baton Twirling Team classes?
Jenny told Crawley Happy Times “the class is open to everyone. There are no age restrictions. It is left down to the discretion of the parents, which also goes for any children with disabilities. We would like to get more boys involved to be honest. Our best twirler is a boy. We used to have about twenty five members but have diminished in members since Christmas. We would welcome anyone to come and try the class for free”. Jodie went on to say “Topaz Baton Twirling Team have represented England in the National for the last ten years. We are very proud of the standard of our baton twirlers and have members who travel to the classes from quite far afield”.
Laura Lambert let CHT finger puppet have a go at baton twirling
We spoke to the girls present. They were helping the younger ones with their practise and told us they enjoy the classess and love going to competitions. Laura Lambert told us “it has been a real boost for my confidence and I have made some great friends to”.
When and where are the classes held?
Classes are currently held at St Johns Church in Crawley’s town centre.
Mondays – Beginners Class 18.00 – 20.00
Sundays – Advanced Class 18.00 – 20.00
NOTE: The organisers are currently searching for a new venue with high ceilings (which is affordable). As much as they appreciate St John’s hospitality, they need a higher area. If you have any interest in helping please contact us directly and we will put you in touch with the organisers.
We would like to thank everyone for their hospitality, we were made most welcome.
We took some footage of the members practising and interviewed Jodie and Jenny. Thank you to the Laura Johnson, Rebecca Potterton and Laura Lambert for speaking to us.

On Saturday 10th April Toby Anstis played to the crowd at Bar Med.
Most will remember Toby Anstis as the entertaining presenter on CBBC from 1992 to 1995 but Toby has done so much more. Born in 1970 in Northampton Toby has a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Marketing but decided the stage was his calling. Toby then went on to present the morning show on Heart FM radio station. In 2010, Toby Anstis played the role of Teen Angel in Grease until 20 March.
Toby answered the phone to invite the caller down to Bar Med
Shelley and Michelle went down to see Toby at Bar Med where he was ‘on the decks’ belting out some great tunes for the massive crowd who came to see him. Toby told Shelley and Michelle he had been to Bar Med on many occasions as he found it very friendly and Sam, the Manager of Bar Med, always made him feel more than welcome. Shelley and Michelle found Toby to be friendly, polite and very down to earth, as well as being a true gentleman with a great sense of humour!
Here are some pictures of the evening and below is the interview with Shelley and Toby.
On Saturday 13th February Shelley & Sharon from Crawley Happy Times were invited to the Hawth to see some amazing talent perform for a crowded arena.
Organised by the team of youngsters who make up ViYC (Vision in Youth Collective) and headed up by Ben Freer, Chairman of ViYC, the evening was a massive success.
What is ViYC?
Vision in Youth Collective (ViYC) is a group of young people aged 14 to 25 years old who advise Crawley Borough Council’s Arts Service on events for young people. ViYC play a vital role in selecting artists for gigs like Urban Sensations and open-mic sessions Unsigned.
ViYC members have recently worked alongside Crawley International Mela Association promoting and organising a Sukshinder Shinda gig as part of the Mela festival. Over 400 young people attended the event.
ViYC are always looking for new members. For more details contact liz.hart@crawley.gov.uk or phone 01293 438156.
Urban Senations 6
Ben told us this is the 6th event in three years. They have also been involved with Mela UK last year and will be more involved with this years event. Ben, who is the longest member of ViYC and still only sixteen told us “I really want to do this type of work for a living so am really enjoying the opportunities ViYC has given me. Everyone works very hard so we hope it is a successful evening and enjoyed by all. We can not thank the Hawth and the staff enough for allowing us this great opportunity.” The staff were wonderful including Liz Hart and Dave Watmore who were quietly watching over the evening in the wings. Liz told us “the members of ViYC have once again done an amazing job of putting this together and have arranged some great headliners too. We are very proud of their achievements”.
Performers
On arrival back stage, we bumped into our young friend Rishi Sharma aka KK. We first met KK at Connect ’09 where he stole the show with his rapping. Only fourteen, KK has ambition, drive and oodles of talent. Last year we suggested keeping an eye on KK, we would like to reiterate that! KK told us he was performing with his good friend Nathan Maxwell aka Bandit. It was our first encounter with Bandit but we are sure we will see him again. Also present was Tom Jordon, KK’s manager. Tom told us he has his own set up for producing and writing music which included his own studio. Although very young Tom seems to have a good head on his shoulders, telling us he also helps out Amy and Billy Delaney. Tom went on to say he is always looking for new local talent.
Next we had a quick chat with Billy Delaney and his friends Jason Hazel aka Souljh and Callum Hopkins aka Flash. Billy told us they were performing together for tonights event. Billy has just been signed and is on his way to great things. We are very happy for Billy who has worked extremely hard over the last couple of years.
In the next room we met Lady C and the Sillouettes who gave a wonderful performance of modern day chart music. They came from all over the place except for the drummer, Lisa, who is from Crawley. We really liked their sound and hope to see them again some day.
Next we met the truly delightful gentlemen who made up Goodfoot Boy Band. These four young individuals from London came to perform their very dramatic dance moves. Bringing theatre, music and dance together, they raised the roof. We really hope to meet these amazing performers again.
In the next room we spoke to our Amy Othieno and her team comprising of Zeth Hockenden, David Simon, Jamie McGraw aka Jzida and for one night only Chelsea Mandizha was the dancer for the evenings performance. Amy has just released her second album and is now looking for a good record label to sign to. Amy is very big in New Zealand with her songs being played on a regular basis on the radio. We feel Amy would make a great addition to any recording company and we would like to wish her luck.
Oli Davis aka Phantom performed with Bandit, KK, Brutz and Alex for one night only making up a group they named Versitile. We spoke to Oli about this special performance. Please see the video for further infomation.
Last of the local performers came in the very tall gentlemanly form of Jerrone Daley aka Snooze. On stage Snooze held the audience in the palm of his hand. A very talented rap artist who we also advise keeping an eye on.
Later that evening the headliners arrived amongst a flurry of young fans. We were privileged enough to speak to all three who were very happy to give a quick interview. First we spoke toDaniel Gomez aka Saint. Saint told us he is curerently the UK battle champion (like Eminem in 8 Mile). Saint has just released a song featuring with Ndubz which you can listen to here. We were very impressed at the amount of time Saint spent out the back with some young lads, listening to them rap in turn. We wish Saint all the best for a successful future.
Saint is the UK battle champion
Next on our hit list for an interview was Jermaine Scott aka Wretch 32, who was adorable. As you will see in the interview, Shelley and Wretch hit it off straight away. It was a pleasure to speak to Wretch 32 and we wish him all the success. You can see some of Wretch 32′s music here.
Wretch 32 was a pleasure to meet
Last but not least we spoke to Tayo Jarrett aka Scorcher. Poor Scorcher had a terrible headache so we didn’t hold him up for long. Scorcher and Wretch 32 mingle in the same circles and are both grime, rap artists. Scorcher told us “I lived in a house with a big family and there was always different types of music coming from each room, so you get a good knowledge of music and rhythms which has helped me in my musical career”.
Scorcher listened to all sorts of music when he was young
Enigma Security were on hand, donating their services. Ifti Haq, Director, told us they are always happy to donate their services where the young people of Crawley are involved. They also donate their time and services for the Mela event and have done so year on year since it started.
(L-R) Jamal, Vitor and Ifti from Enigma Security
All in all, it was a wonderful evening full of great music, great organisation and great people. Well done to all who were involved. We look forward to attending Urban Sensations 7!
You can view previous Urban Sensation performances here,
On Tuesday 2nd January singer songwriters fought their way to the Apple Tree in West Green, Crawley to show off their talents.
The brave and intrepid (and some possibly a bit insane) members of the Crawley’s music community turned out in artic conditions to perform at The Apple Tree’s singer songwriter night. The first to arrive was Danny Dangerously and Rory Flynn closely followed by the guys who collectively make up the rock band “Soma” Ryan Howlett, Tim Rowell and Luke Ogden. Crawley music veteran Ken Birch provided the P.A. system. Kenalso played for the crowd.
After a number of inspired performances, which were recorded by Jonathan Head. Carl is currently setting up a MySpace page where you will be able to see these great performances.
It was decided to bring the night to an early conclusion in the face of deteriorating weather conditions, allowing people to get home safely.
It turns out the band named “Soma” featuring Ryan Howlett, Tim Rowell and Luke Ogden are in search of a new band name and are looking for inspiration from the people of Crawley. If you have any suggestions, please send them to editor@crawleyhappytimes.co.uk.
The next singer songwriter night is Tuesday 2nd February. If you missed this one, put a date in your diary.
We thank Carl Brooks for this article and the pictures.
On Saturday 12th December Xmas was officially launched by the performance of Cinderella at the Hawth in Crawley.
With a star studded cast and the talents of two local performing arts companies, it was a brilliant rendition of the classic, Cinderella. With Julian Clary as Dandini, Danny Bayne as Prince Charming and the beautiful Vicky Longley as Cinderella the show was bound to be entertaining and full of those great one liners which gave the audience the chance to shout at the stage “he’s behind you!” and “Oh no it’s not!”. But in our opinion the true star of the show came in the form of Joe Tracini who played Buttons. Some may recognise this extremely talented young man from BBC three’s Coming of Age and My Spy Family. Joe owned the stage and had the audience eating out of his hands (we did very well looking after his present). We found Joe to be a mix of Joe Pasquale and Norman Wisdom, in the greatest of ways! (Some may get the connection between these two Joe’s but we do not feel the need to highlight it, as Joe stands out all on his own).
Stages Performing Arts and Stagecoach complimented the star cast with such talent that you would think they had performed together for the whole year! The young performers, mostly from Crawley, were so proffesional it was hard to distinguish them from the leading cast members which we have no doubt the proud parents in the audience would agree with.
In the interval we met a gentleman who was watching with his daughter. He said she was getting a bit big for panto now, but he enjoyed it so much that he came every year and would probably come even if his daughter didn’t want to. The gentleman told us “my christmas starts once I have watched panto at the Hawth, it’s almost a tradition and get’s me in the mood”. We felt this was the case for most of the serial panto goers. In fact if you are not addicted before, this performance would have changed that. The scenery was just amazing, with two real shetland ponies used to pull the stunning carriage. The production crew should be very pleased with themselves. And, of course, the outfits were fit for a Prince

Joe Tracini signs our ticket for us. Such a nice man!
Shelley and CHT finger puppet thought Joe Tracini stole the show!
