Crawley MP Appeals For Nominations For  Best Live Band & Music Venue As Part Of National Rock The House Competition

Henry Smith MP is proud to invite nominations from budding Crawley music bands to be considered for the best live band and best live music venue awards of the first ever Parliamentary Rock the House competition.

Rock the House is an accessible vehicle through which to capture the imagination of the public and legislators in recognition of the need to support and promote the live music sector. It aims to promote the intellectual property rights of unsigned and up and coming musicians; and highlight the importance of live music venues to local communities.

Henry will nominate one band and one live music venue on 31 March 2011. Any band or live music venue can enter the competition by downloading and completing an application form from www.rockthehouse.me.uk and send fully completed submissions to henry.smith.mp@parliament.uk by 31st March.

Finalists and winners will be determined by an independent judging panel, which includes Chris Ingham, Group Publisher of Future Publishing, musicians and music professionals, Mike Weatherley MP and John Robertson MP (Chair of the APPG on Music).

The Panel will determine the five finalists in each category, and the shortlist will be announced by the end of May 2011. Each of the finalists will be invited to a star studded reception on the Terrace of the House of Commons, on 30th June 2011, where the winners will be announced.

The sponsors and supporters have pulled together an unbelievable array of prizes, many of which money can’t buy, including: the chance to perform live on the terrace at the House of Commons and at a top music venue or a music festival; a photo shoot with an internationally published music photographer; Yamaha gear and instruments; the chance to network and have consultancy sessions with top industry professionals; master classes from top sound and lighting engineers; the opportunity to record music; the chance to make a music video; invaluable PR exposure through coverage in Future Publishing’s catalogue of specialist music titles; and many more runners up prizes.

Rock the House is supported by a myriad of big names within the international and British music sector: Yamaha music; UK Music; Future Publishing; BPI; Live Nation; Consumer Focus; Music Managers Forum (MMF); Incorporated Society of Musicians; MVPA; the All Party Parliamentary Group on Music (APPG on Music); and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Pubs & Clubs (APPG on Pubs & Clubs).

Henry said, “The future of music lies in the hands of the up and coming artists, and the live music venues which support them, but it is increasingly difficult to break through in a sector where many consumers think it is their right to access content for free. Without recognition that this music actually constitutes the creative and intellectual property rights of artists, the future contribution the sector makes to the economy could be jeopardised. This is particularly bad news for anything outside of mainstream genres and will serve only to stifle the diversity of the British music scene.  It is my hope that local, talented bands will take advantage of this opportunity and will look to star in that most obvious alternative music venue to Glastonbury; the House of Commons!”

GREENbin spaces available

GREENbin spaces available

Around 1,000 places are now available on Crawley Borough Council’s GREENbin service.

The council has rearranged the GREENbin collection rounds so it can accommodate more customers while still using one collection vehicle and crew.

This change does mean a small number of residents will now have their green garden waste collected on a different day of the week to their rubbish and recycling collections.

The service can now accommodate around 5,000 customers. All customers on the waiting list will be contacted before accepting new customers.

Councillor Keith Blake, Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: ”The GREENbin scheme has been a great success.

“It has collected lots more garden waste than our previous scheme and results in fewer journeys to the Household Waste Recycling Site.

“Also, this extra green waste going to the composter should add between one and two per cent to our annual recycling rate.”

Last year, the scheme saw 879 tonnes of green waste collected from 4,000 homes.

All customers already signed up to the service will receive their annual invoice at the start of February and collection calendars detailing the collection schedules for the year will be sent out around the middle of February.

The cost for the 2011 GREENbin collection service is just £45, which takes into account the VAT increase as well as inflationary increases in contractual costs. The fortnightly collection service runs from March until November. The green waste is taken to a large composting facility in Henfield.

To apply for a GREENbin, visit www.crawley.gov.uk/greenbin, call 0800 5875 888 or email amenity.services@crawley.gov.uk

The Oscar style event – dubbed the YOFSCARs – will honour young people (11-19) who have taken part in three competitions.

Another competition is for young people who sit on one of the 26 Locality Youth Forums (LYF) across West Sussex, which allocate funding.

The third is open to groups that have not had any YOF money, but make a difference to young people and their communities.

The deadline to enter the YOFSCARs is Friday March 4.

West Sussex County Council’s Participation team, which is hosting the event, is also asking for young people to get involved in planning the night.

Making the most of summer on the South Downs

Making the most of summer on the South Downs

Mid summer is one of the best times of year to enjoy the South Downs countryside – make the most of it this June with the annual South Downs Way Walk.

The nine-day walk starts in Eastbourne on Friday June 10 and finishes at the Guildhall in Winchester on Saturday June 18 with a celebration party.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart said: “Hundreds of people from all over the world have enjoyed this 106 mile walk over the past 32 years.

“June is one of the best months to view the South Downs Way – it’s chosen when orchids such as the Common-Spotted and occasionally the rare Bee Orchid, and butterflies like the Chalk Hill Blue are at their best.”

The walk follows the National Trail and is organised by Footprints of Sussex on behalf of the County Council. Each day averages 11 to 12 miles and is taken at the walkers own pace.

As well as the countryside, the trail introduces walkers to famous Sussex sites such as the Jack and Jill Windmills, made famous by the Universal film ‘The Black Windmill’ starring Michael Caine; the mysterious Chanctonbury Ring, which has many legends concerning the devil and ghostly goings on; the 900-year-old Amberley Castle; the remains of Stane Street where the Romans crossed the Downs 2,000 years ago; and the modern day environmental art of Andy Goldsworthy’s Chalk Stones.

Walkers are picked up by coach each day from various points along the south coast, taken to the start of the walk and returned in the afternoon.

Keith McKenna, from Footprints, said: “We have a team of ten experienced leaders to walk with the group and bring the whole nine days to life with their knowledge of the trail.

“Every day we have various competitions to enter, and churches, teashops, pubs and farms open specially to welcome walkers as they pass through. There’s even free beer and cold drinks on the hottest days, and a lively debate about where the best bacon butties have been served at the start of each day!”

The full event costs £198 per person, to include transport each day and the buffet reception in Winchester where certificates and competition prizes are presented.

For further information and booking forms contact Keith on 01903 813381 or visit the event website at www.southdownsway.com.

West Sussex Cabinet recommends council tax freeze

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

West Sussex Cabinet recommends council tax freeze

West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet voted today (Tuesday) to recommend a council tax freeze for 2011/12.

It would mean that the average Band D taxpayer will be sent exactly the same bill as they paid in the current year for services provided by the County Council.

The final decision will be taken by the full Council at its budget meeting on February 11, which will be webcast.

A report to today’s meeting said the budget “embodies the core principles of living within our means, protecting the vulnerable and bearing down vigorously on administration costs.

“The result is a financial package which leaves the County Council as well placed as possible to deal with today’s age of austerity.”

If approved, Band D will remain at £1,161.99.

Still to be added to the figure will be the amounts needed for services provided by individual District or Borough Councils, Sussex Police, as well as town or parish council requirements.

Michael Brown, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “I am sure that our recommendation today will be welcome news for residents, and we remain committed in future years to keep any tax increases at or below the rate of inflation.

“It has not been an easy budget by any means and we have had to work against a backdrop of reduced grants from the Government due to the pressing need to get the country’s finances back on a sound footing.

“We are going to have to reduce services in some areas, and that will not be an easy task.

“However, I think it is important to make it clear that this is not a budget dominated by service cuts even though we need to reduce spending by £79 million by 2013.

“We aim to find a substantial amount of those savings by reducing bureaucracy by 30 per cent and working much more efficiently.

“This is a budget that does protect the most vulnerable, there will be investment in Children’s Services, and we are also committed to maintaining our road network and dealing with potholes.”

Today’s report also gave the results of a budget consultation launched by the County Council – 88 per cent of people who responded agreed with the approach of freezing council tax and 55 per cent also supported linking future tax rises to the Retail Price Index (RPI).

Services that people least wanted cut were Caring for Older People, Fire and Rescue and Children and Young People.

County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We obviously face some very difficult decisions over the next three years, but I would like this to be seen as the ‘Big Society’ budget.

“We are totally committed to working with the widest possible range of partners from the public and voluntary sectors as well our local communities.

“The ‘Big Society’ concept is not new to West Sussex and we have been doing this for some time, but we want to go much further and faster.

“Where we may not be able to deliver a particular service we can offer a package of help, advice, perhaps some money to kick-start a project or even transfer a building so it becomes a community run asset.”

The report to today’s Cabinet meeting can be seen in full at www.westsussex.gov.uk and then following the link to Meetings and Decision Making.

Crawley MP Gives Support To The Real Red Devils

Henry Smith MP has given his backing to Crawley Town FC ahead of their FA Cup Fifth Round tie away at Manchester United on Saturday February 19, which will be shown live on ITV1.

Henry said, “I am really looking forward to going to see Crawley Town play at Old Trafford. This Cup run is giving the club, and the town as a whole, media coverage which we have never seen before. I want to pay tribute to the players, management, and everyone else connected with the club for everything they have achieved so far this season”

This is the first time Crawley Town have ever reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Over 10,000 supporters will be travelling to Manchester to support the local side, the biggest matchday support the club has ever had. Henry continued, “It has been fantastic to see the town get behind the club like this. I have felt particular pride in the club and the town when hearing us mentioned in the national media – long may it continue. Being able to hold my head up high in the House of Commons when talking football with MPs from other cities with internationally known teams has been great!

“Given the season the team has had so far, who knows what will happen on Saturday!”

Bewbush Graffiti Cube

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Young people from Bewbush Youth Centre have left their mark on the regeneration of Dorsten Square by creating a graffiti art cube.

Working with local graffiti artist, Skribblez, young people took part in design workshops at Bewbush youth centre and used their new skills to create the graffiti art over a few weekends.

The cube, a small sub-station owned and maintained by EDF Energy and located opposite the new Bewbush Centre, has been transformed into a bright and colourful display featuring original designs.

The youngsters were particularly interested in the theme of anti-crime and worked with the artist on finding relevant images they felt would give a positive message to the community.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a fantastic piece of art which highlights the breadth of talent in our youngsters that needs to be encouraged across the borough as a whole. I’d like to think it helps to highlight the need for some careful consideration of the potential impact of the youth services review.”

He added: “I know people’s taste in art differs widely but this shows our youngsters in a really positive light and at their creative best. It means the area has a piece of contemporary art which reflects them and gives them a real sense of ownership in their area.”

The work was part of the area’s regeneration and was coordinated by Crawley Council staff with support from West Sussex County Council Youth Service.

The designs on the graffiti cube will be staying put until early summer when the local artist will be coming back to work with the young people to create new designs so that the cube is kept up to date and clean.

For more information or if you would like to be involved in the project in May please contact Liz Hart Community Arts Officer on 01293 438565 or Vikki Jacobs Community Development Officer on 01293 438565

State of the Borough Debate

State of the Borough Debate

More than 120 people came to Crawley’s fifth State of the Borough Debate last night (Wednesday February 2).

The annual debate, which was held in Crawley Library, began with a short presentation by Councillor Bob Lanzer, Leader of Crawley Borough Council, looking back at the past year.

Successes included the opening of both Bewbush and Langley Green centres, the town and Let’s FACE it! winning Britain in Bloom awards, crime falling again, Manor Royal regeneration, flood alleviation, eco-houses and 10:10.

Councillor Lanzer was joined by Councillors Duncan Crow and Brenda Smith, both borough and county councillors. Crawley District Commander Chief Inspector Steve Curry, Dr Amit Bhargava and Crawley’s Youth Mayor Pravin Sanasy completed the panel.

Audience members asked many questions and raised many views with the panel, including:

• Parking on grass verges

• A new hospital

• Controlled Parking Zones and Civil Parking Enforcement

• Capacity at K2 Crawley

• Potential for a park and ride scheme

• Disabled access at K2 Crawley

• Improvements to Three Bridges Station car park

• Community arts and The Hawth.

The views and comments expressed will help the council to plan its work on improving its services and the town in general.

Councillor Lanzer said: “These debates are a great opportunity for politicians to hear what residents and business people think of the town and help inform our decision making.

“This debate was the best yet and it has given us another opportunity to find out what audience members think is important when it comes to council services, as well as those of Sussex Police, the NHS and services for young people. I’d like to thank everyone who came along.”

DrSpaFish, only a few feet away from you

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

On Tuesday 1st February Crawley Happy Times were invited down to the County Mall for the official launch of the eagerly awaited DrSpaFish shop.

We were slightly dubious about putting our feet in a tank full of fish, but were pleasantly surprised with the results. Here are some facts about the company and the fish they use.

DrSpaFish and the Garra Rufa fish:

DrSpafish is a bright and cheerful environment with welcoming staff. After filling in and signing a routine medical questionnaire you are then ready for the treatment. We couldn’t find much info on when or how it came to the UK but can confirm it is one of the fastest growing franchises we have ever seen.

Garra Rufa or Spa Fish are the name of the primary fish used in the spa treatment known as a fish pedicure, fish reflexology which involves the Garra Rufa fish nibbling at the dead skin to leave feet feeling soft and smooth. Also known as Doctor Fish or Kangal Fish – named after the town in Turkey where the fish are found in abundance – these Garra Rufa fish have become very popular in the development of spa techniques across the world.

The Garra Rufa fish, native to river basins in Turkey, were found to have therapeutic healing qualities about 400 years ago and earned the title of “doctor fish”. Regular treatments will eliminate any hard skin on the feet and this is the most natural pedicure treatment you can get. It can also be beneficial to patients suffering from skin disorders such as psoriasis and exzema as the fish naturally eat and remove dead skin.

We took one of our readers with us to the launch. Thank you to Maz Mitchell for keeping us company. Maz enjoyed the treatment and says she will be going back again very soon :-)

Here you will see interviews with some of the local visitors, an interview with Bradly Carter, Director of DrSpaFish and a summary of the visit from Shelley.

Crawley Borough Council congratulates Crawley Town FC

Council congratulates Crawley Town FC

Crawley Borough Council has congratulated Crawley Town FC for their FA Cup triumph over Torquay United on Saturday – and fairytale 5th round draw against Manchester United.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “FA Cup fever has truly hit Crawley now! Congratulations to the players, management and supporters for a fantastic result at Torquay United on Saturday.

“It’s turning into a momentous season for the Red Devils. Who better to meet in the 5th round of the best cup competition in the world than Manchester United? I expect Crawley to be pretty quiet in three weeks’ time!”

Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Lee Burke, said: “I offer my congratulations to Crawley Town. It was a fantastic result and a wonderful day for the town, followed by the remarkable draw yesterday. This really is the magic of the cup and helps put Crawley on the map.

Crawley MP Supports Chewing Gum Campaign

Crawley MP Supports Chewing Gum Campaign

Henry Smith has today shown his appreciation for the advertising campaign undertaken by the Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG) who are helping to raise awareness surrounding the detrimental environmental and financial consequences which arise from the dropping of gum in public areas.

Having previously worked hard as Leader of West Sussex County Council to raise awareness of the problems associated with this kind of anti-social littering, Henry Smith explained, “Each year councils in Britain spend approximately £150 million on cleaning gum from the streets. Last year Crawley was chosen along with nine other local authorities across the country to test-case the benefits associated with such advertising and, thanks to a positive advertising campaign on the part of CGAG, as a result Crawley saw a 37 percent decline in chewing gum refuse in and around town.”

Henry continued, “Despite this, the costs associated to jet washing which is used to clean up street stains and gum, the principle remit being gum removal, still equated to £16,800 which is simply inexcusable, particularly when there are over 350 council bins spread out across Crawley. As a Crawley resident, I want to see the area free from chewing gum stains and, from a number of letters I have received from concerned residents, I am aware that the majority of residents would agree it is an eyesore that must continue to be addressed and I hope that the advertising campaign will continue to be a success.”

CGAG is a joint initiative established to educate gum-chewers about the irresponsible disposal of chewing gum. Chaired by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), High profile representatives from the chewing gum industry have aligned together to help raise awareness on the matter.

Members of CGAG include Keep Britain Tidy, the Local Government Association and the Chartered Institution of Waste Management, with 2011 marking the fourth consecutive year that the Group has run its awareness drive to promote consumer responsibility.

Graham Rowe, Crawley Borough Council’s Street Scene, Waste & Recycling Manager, commented, “I would remind residents that dropping chewing gum on the floor is anti-social, costing a lot of money to clean up and that people can be fined if they are caught so please do remember to use the bins provided.”

If you would like further information about CGAG and its annual initiatives, check out their website at http://www.chewinggumactiongroup.org.uk/.

Better cycle connections for Crawley

Better cycle connections for Crawley

The journey has just got easier for cyclists wanting to travel between Crawley town centre, Manor Royal and Three Bridges.

Two separate routes – between Manor Royal and the town centre and Manor Royal and Three Bridges – are now clearly signed, giving cyclists a direct and convenient route.

West Sussex County Council worked in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and the  to identify the best routes.

It’s hoped the schemes will encourage more people to use a bike for journeys rather than the car.

The County Council’s Cycling Champion, Derek Whittington, said: “This is a real boost for cyclists. I hope the routes will be well used by people commuting to work or travelling into the town centre.”

Councillor Claire Denman, Crawley Borough Council Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development said: “These are important routes for cyclists travelling to work in Manor Royal and hopefully the clearer signs will encourage more people to get on their bikes and leave their cars at home.”

A further route from Manor Royal to Three Bridges via St Mary’s Drive is also due to be worked on in March.

Chichester Library is set to host a free exhibition of designs of the Chichester Mascot, for the West Sussex-Ahead of the Game programme celebrating the London 2012 Games.

Chichester District Council heads the Chichester mascot designing project on behalf of the West Sussex Arts Partnership.

Members of West Sussex County Council’s Starburst Arts, and the Apuldram Centre, Chichester have designed the artwork, which will be on display from Monday January 31 for a week.

Starburst Arts is an integrated arts centre based at the Wrenford Centre in Chichester, which provides a day service for people with learning difficulties.

Members from both centres entered a selection of artwork based around the theme of celebration.

The exhibition includes the winning design by Mark Talmage, from Starburst Arts.

West Sussex-Ahead of the Game is a countywide initiative, to ensure West Sussex makes the most of the 2012 Games, and plays a full part in a successful celebration.

Deborah Urquhart, County Council Member for Environment and Economy, said: “This project was an ideal opportunity to celebrate the games and get people involved in a creative project.

Food hygiene offences bring £14,000 fines

Food hygiene offences bring £14,000 fines

An owner of a small supermarket and butchers who pleaded guilty to 14 food hygiene offences received fines totalling £14,000 at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (January 20).

Qaiser Shahzad personally pleaded guilty to 14 food hygiene offences plus a further 14 food hygiene offences as the managing director of AS (Sussex) Retail, trading as Mace in Gales Drive, Three Bridges, Crawley.

Over a period of two years Crawley Borough Council’s Environmental Health Officers continually attempted to get an improvement in the general standard of hygiene and cleaning at the premises. Officers also tried to get the company to put in place and implement a food safety system for the business and ensure staff were properly supervised and trained in food hygiene.

Mr Shahzad was personally fined £5,600 and ordered to pay £500 costs and a £15 victim charge. AS (Sussex) Retail was fined £8,400 and ordered to pay £2,000 costs and a victim charge of £15. The fines totalled £14,000 and costs totalled £2,500.

Mr Shahzad is now booked on a three-day food hygiene course for supervisors.

Councillor Keith Blake, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “The council will use its powers to enforce legislation and help to keep customers safe from the potential harm of poor food hygiene.

“This should be a warning to anyone with food premises to ensure they meet all necessary legislation.”

Philip Harris, Environmental Health Officer, said: “With all matters concerning environmental health including food hygiene we always attempt by education and encouragement to achieve our aims of protecting the public but when this approach results in a failure by those responsible to act within the law, legal action is the last resort.”
