On Sunday 7th August Three Bridges FC showed Essex United the way it is done by beating them 3-2.
With Mark Wright, star of The Only Way Is Essex and Jack Tweed, widower of Jade Goody playing for the Essex United team it was a game looked on by many.
The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright
The first goal was an impressive sight by Tim River in the 37th minute. James Grant then moved in to give Three Bridges a 2-0 lead just before the end of the first half.
Essex United came back to score just after the whistle for the start of the second half with a great goal by Tom Williams making it 2-1. This was not to last long as shortly after Tim Rivers made another smooth shot to make the score 3-1.
Five minutes later Lee Roget put one in the back of the net for Essex United making the final score 3-2.
We sent Shelley along to film the game and take some photos for you. Shelley spoke to Mark Wright who said “I have enjoyed coming to Crawley and the people have been lovely”.
The full game can be seen here (please be advised there is some bad language in this footage).

Henry Smith today welcomed news that Tesco has invested £30,849 worth of ‘Tesco for Schools and Clubs’ equipment into local schools and clubs over the last year.
Henry said:
“Crawley is in the top fifty places nationally in which Tesco has invested the most into.
“I want to congratulate the community-minded spirit of locals for collecting so many vouchers at the till and to thank Tesco for the scheme. Over a million were collected last year, and I would encourage people to keep it up this year until the deadline on May 8th. So if they’re hanging around the house or kicking around the car then now’s the time to drop them off at your participating school or club!”
Tesco’s Government Affairs Director, Ben Coates, told Henry:
“For the first time, we are encouraging customers to choose a local school or club to receive their spare vouchers, by setting ‘postboxes’ in Community Champion stores. We hope this will contribute to even more equipment being distributed than the 440,000 items worth £9.3 million we gave nationally in 2011.”
It will be the icing on the cake for West Sussex Meals on Wheels users as part of celebrations for the Royal Wedding.
On Thursday 28th April, the day before the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, West Sussex County Council’s Meals on Wheels Service will be adding a free piece of wedding cake to the menu.
It will go out as an extra item to everyone who receives a meal on that day and will be supplied by the Meals on Wheels food providers Apetito and Nibbles.
The Service has a wide range of meals on offer, from hot cooked meals to salads and desserts. Meals can be delivered frozen as well, to enable residents to stock up their freezer.
County Council Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, Peter Catchpole, said: “The Royal Wedding will be a wonderful occasion and this is a great chance for some of our residents to celebrate it.
“There are many reasons why someone may want to take up our Meals on Wheels Service. They may be less able to cook their own meals, or have just come out of hospital.”
The Service is delivered by the WRVS across the county and can also include dietary needs such as diabetic, lower fat, gluten free, reduced salts and pureed meals and desserts.
There’s also an afternoon tea service providing sandwiches and homemade cakes.
An assessment from your doctor is not needed to apply for Meals on Wheels and people can contact the service direct. Contact your local Meals on Wheels kitchen or visit the County Council website, www.westsussex.gov.uk
In celebration of her 85th Birthday, Her Majesty the Queen has issued as local company, Aerotron Limited, with the Award to Industry for outstanding achievements in International Trade.
Crawley MP, Henry Smith said:
“This is the second time that the Queen’s Award to Industry has been conferred upon Aerotron Limited in this category and it is a testament to the hard, dedicated work of the company’s staff in ensuring that Crawley is seen as an international location for business and that Britain is seen as ‘open for business’ abroad.
“The Prime Minister only yesterday emphasised the need to sell ourselves abroad and the need to be much more competitive internationally – Aerotron Limited is clearly an example to others in this respect.
“I find it extremely heartening to once again see Crawley leading the way at the forefront of British business, selling our services with our workforce both at home and abroad.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate Aerotron Limited’s Chairman, Mr Westley, his two sons and the rest of his team on their well earned Award.”
In 2012 Crawley will have a St. George’s Day parade presenting cultural, working and educational aspects of living in Crawley. This will be followed by a display of music and dancing in Queen’s square.
There are already some excellent events celebrating various cultures that contribute to life in Crawley. There are some excellent events celebrating St. George’s Day. We now wish to add to this and hold a parade to celebrate out English culture.
This parade will take place on Sunday 22nd April 2012 the day before St. George’s Day.
The Parade will be non-political and our aim is to hold an event that is fun for all those that participate and enjoyable for all those that watch.
Volunteers are needed to help to organise the 2012 St. George’s Day Parade.
It is expected that the organising committee will be formed and start regular meetings in September.
We welcome all volunteers for this event and in particular we would like to include people with the skills to help with raising sponsorship, developing a web site, recruiting and organising the participants and the show in Queens Square and help in recruiting volunteers for the Parade. We will also need lots of volunteers for the parade itself.
We offer the opportunity for local businesses and organisations to enter floats and to sponsor the event.
We would also like to hear from anyone already planning St. George’s day event to avoid clash of schedules.
Volunteers and Sponsors should contact Richard Miller:

It all kicked off on Sunday (April 3), for Sussex Police as they were faced with a group of youths in Crawley.
Although this isn’t what you think – the police were playing a football match against young people from the Escape Youth Project in Broadfield.
The event was organised by the West Sussex County Council run Escape Youth Project – a drop-in service, which host youth facilities for 11 to 19 year olds on a Sunday at Broadfield’s youth centre – and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Ashleigh Hanlon.
The football event was also supported by West Sussex County Council Youth Service, Sussex Police, Freedom Leisure, Crawley Borough Council, Rare Range Coaching, who helped with coaching on the day, and local resident group Inspire Broadfield, who provided refreshments on the day.
Around 150 people turned up on Mother’s Day at Crawley’s K2 Leisure Centre to watch the Under 19s beat the force 1-0 in the last 25 seconds of the game, when Levi Austin headed the ball to Terry Sandwell who scored the goal.
Crawley Town FC player Richard Brodie awarded trophies and congratulated players after the match.
Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “This event is a great example of communities working together to help develop young people’s relationships with each other and encourage them to be active.
“Well done to all involved and everyone who went along to support the teams.
Crawley MP Welcomes Help For The Poorest Local Children Through The Pupil Premium
Henry Smith has welcomed new figures which show that disadvantaged children in Crawley are set to receive £683,000 this year under the Coalition Government’s new ‘pupil premium’.
The pupil premium is a new policy promised by the Conservatives before the general election last year. It is an extra lump sum of cash which follows every disadvantaged child and is received by schools, allowing them to provide additional support such as one-to-one tuition and extra pastoral care.
The Government has announced that in the year from April 2011, the pupil premium will be worth £430 for every pupil on Free School Meals, £430 for every looked-after child, and £200 for every child who has a parent in the armed services. This means that in Crawley this year 1,590 children overall will benefit from the £683,000 funding.
Henry Smith said:
“This is fantastic news for young people in Crawley. The gap between the academic performance of children from deprived backgrounds and their peers is far too big and has been ignored for too long.
“The pupil premium will tackle this disparity head on, providing targeted funding for those who need it most. This could mean extra one-to-one tuition or more pastoral support.
“The Government didn’t create these problems but, even in these tough times, it is delivering a massive boost to the education of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children.”
The event: Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club Stroke and Health Awareness Day
Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club have again joined forces with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) for this Year’s Event.
South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) paramedic and Clinical Operations Manager for Crawley, Dave Atkins said: “Strokes devastate the lives of thousands of people across our region every year and SECAmb are pleased to be able to support local awareness raising events. If someone suspects a person has suffered a stroke they should call 999 immediately. The sooner we get to someone who may have suffered a stroke the sooner we can get them to the specialist care they need”
High Blood Pressure can affect people of ALL AGES and most do not know they have a problem till it is TOO LATE.
It is better to be safe than sorry so please come along for your FREE Blood Pressure Test between 10am and 4pm.
In 2008 when we did the same event during the two hour event 35 men and woman of all ages had a blood pressure check carried out by medical professionals. Five had higher than usual blood pressure and were encouraged to visit their GP for further checks. This equates to nearly 15% of those tested.
We ran our second ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ event on Saturday 17th April 2010 with alarming results. During the event 54 men and woman of all ages had a blood pressure check carried out by the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb). Ten had higher than usual blood pressure and were encouraged to visit their GP for further checks. The percentage referred in 2010 was 20% a 25% increase on 2008.
Drama unfurled towards the end of the 2010 event when a visitor from Coulsden dropped in for a routine check.
After making the necessary checks and an ECG phone calls then triggered an ambulance being called and the visitor being rushed to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.
Rotary Know Your Blood Pressure Day 2011 will see over 400 Rotary clubs taking to the high streets to take the public’s blood pressure.
On average, the awareness day sees around 13,500 people step up to have their blood pressure taken, with just under 3,000 being advised to see their GP for more tests and a further 196 urged to seek medical advice immediately. It’s fair to say that over the years, this event has prevented thousands of people suffering the sometimes fatal and often disabling consequences of a stroke.
Rotary Know Your Blood Pressure Day is run in partnership with The Stroke Association to help people better understand the relation between high blood pressure (hypertension) and stroke. It is estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the U.K each year could be prevented. This condition can easily be controlled.
Rotary recognises that one of the biggest challenges is to help people understand that strokes don’t just happen to other people. They can happen to anyone, at any age and the biggest single risk is high blood pressure. Rotarian volunteers play an invaluable role in reaching out to people, encouraging them to have regular checks and take action when needed.
Rotary clubs run their blood pressure check events in church halls, supermarkets, shopping centres, libraries and leisure centres, usually assisted by a small team of health professionals, perhaps a GP or practice nurse.
Crawley MP Congratulates Local Firm On Successful £100m Deal For London 2012 Security Services
The Manor Royal based G4S has won a deal to recruit, train and manage over 10,000 security staff for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Henry Smith said:
“This £100 million contract is one in a series of successful business deals won across Crawley which help place local business at the heart of the upcoming 2012 Games.
“Well done to the G4S team that worked so hard to put together and sell a winning bid which will undoubtedly create yet more jobs locally and assist other businesses. The bid was won against the backdrop of tough competition and it is a true testament to G4S that they have been appointed for this essential role.
“I am pleased to see the extent to which Crawley is benefiting from the London Games and will continue to try and build on this platform further still.”
On Sunday 27th March 2011 the sun shone and the people of Crawley came in their hundreds to help raise money for ‘Milly’s Journey’.
Now you may think this is done all the time….but, not organised, promoted, and pulled off in just two weeks! This is not the only event being held to raise funds for Milly. Milly is a five year old who needs proton treatment for a brain tumor. This treatment can only be given in the USA. Today we met Milly for the first time and her courage and happy attitude was touching. Milly was a joy to meet. Milly’s parents Paul and Emma were hands on during the day and never seemed to slow down. This family are a credit to our town. The community showed that by turning up in their hundreds. We believe the total was 946!
It really was a brilliant event with children having fun and adults socialising while enjoying the weather. We will get a list of all the helpers on the day and will let you know. But the real thank you goes to those caring people who came and donated by having a tea or coffee, or buying a plant, guessing the number of sweets, or having one of those yummy cakes
More to come……
We put together some pictures of the day and a video of interviews by Shelley.

The council is urging Crawley people to do their bit for the planet this week and switch off for Earth Hour.
Crawley Borough Council already has a policy to switch off lights in its buildings across town and now it’s asking residents to switch off for an hour between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday (March 26).
Councillor Keith Blake, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “We’ve been switching off the lights in all our buildings every night since 2003. Crawley Council is working hard to make sure it considers the environment in all its activities.
“Last year we reduced our carbon emissions by five per cent, this year we’re aiming for 10 per cent with a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.
“We’ve commissioned some highly eco-friendly buildings recently, like the new Bewbush Centre, the new homes currently being built in Rushetts Place, Langley Green, and the Retrofit project which is reducing carbon emissions from four existing council properties by 80 per cent.
“We’re now looking at making existing buildings ever more efficient while making greater use of renewable energy such as Solar PV”
Earth hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.
2010 saw the biggest Earth Hour yet with 128 countries and territories joining the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific and Europe to Africa and the Americas switched off.
This year WWF, the organisation behind Earth Hour, want people to go beyond the hour and think about what else they can do to make a difference.

The Crawley Foyer has been announced as the winner of the 2010 Social Enterprise Innovation Award.
It means they’ve won £4,000 to develop their business idea of creating T-shirts to sell.
Run by the West Sussex Social Enterprise Network together with West Sussex County Council, the award supports social enterprises and encourages them to submit proposals for innovative ideas for products or services with economic, social or environmental benefits.
Crawley Foyer will use the money to develop their idea of creating a social enterprise producing T-shirts to sell and to mark special events and to a customer’s specific design.
The idea was developed by young people at Crawley Foyer. Developing the social enterprise will help homeless young people to learn the skills and expertise of setting up and running their own business.
County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart said: “It was very difficult deciding on a winner for the award this year as the standard of entrants was so high.
“The panel all agreed the Crawley Foyer had an excellent proposal. The idea for their T-shirt business was developed by young people who will be involved in its delivery. Building the business will help these young people develop skills and gain experience for the future, and I wish the initiative every success.”
Simon Colquhoun, Foyer Manager, said: “It’s fantastic that the business ideas and initiatives of the Crawley Foyer young people have been recognised through this award. The prize and support will give our young people the opportunity to develop their own business venture; through this learning key skills and knowledge. We hope this project will provide inspiration for the young people to further their careers and personal development.”
There will be an official ceremony later this year to present the Crawley Foyer with their award.
For further information on the West Sussex Social Enterprise Network visit the website at www.wssen.org.
Crawley Town Football Club have gone from strength to strength and are now heading for promotion in the league.
With five games in hand and currently sitting in second place in the Blue Square Premier League, Crawley are in a strong position to be promoted to NPower league two (as it is called now). CTFC have made steady progress over the last few years. This season they have only lost three league games.
Oriel High School
The Business Studies Department at Oriel High School has entered a team into the St. Catherine’s Enterprise Challenge. This is a local school’s business competition that aims to raise money for St. Catherine’s Hospice. St. Catherine’s is a local hospice “dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.” The team is called Oriel Inspired and they have held a number of events to raise money for St. Catherine’s Hospice.
These events include:
A football tournament that was attended by over 100 students from all years in the school. Crawley Town Football Club sent youth reserve team players to help on the day along with the mascot Reggie the Red Devil.
A cake sale in the main hall
A non-school uniform day was held on February the 17th which had a Crawley Town red and white them to support the club in their big game against Manchester United on Saturday. All the proceeds went towards the St. Catherine’s Hospice charity. Also the winners of the football tournament had a training session with Crawley Town players and coaches as a prize on the 17th. So far Oriel Inspired has raised over £1200 for St. Catherine’s Hospice.
Manchester United v CTFC
On Saturday 19th February CTFC travelled to Old Trafford for their away game against Manchester United for the FA Cup fifith round clash. CTFC played a positive and powerful game which ended in a 1-0 score to Manchester United. CTFC, although being some 93 league places bellow Manchester United gave a performance that many premiership clubs would have been proud of.
Councillor Brenda Burgess was quoted as saying “I have always said what a great town Crawley is and that, I believe, is down to the people who live here; so well done Crawley and well done ‘the Red Devils’ for lifting our spirits and being so inspirational – may you go from strength to strength.”
His Worshipful the Mayor Councillor Lee Burke, who attended the match on Saturday told us “Crawley Town played extremely well against the Premier League leaders at Old Trafford and came within a crossbar of securing a replay at the Broadfield Stadium. It was a fantastic performance and it says everything that 9,000 Crawley fans left Old Trafford disappointed with a 1-0 defeat. They played excellently, showed great determination and spirit and not a little skill and have been a credit to the town throughout the FA Cup run and this promising season. The eyes of the world have been on Crawley for the past three weeks and everyone involved with the football club, from the players, staff, management and supporters, have done the town proud.”
We hope all of Crawley will stay behind the team and support them in their further progress. COYR!
