Public concern leads to action taken to slow traffic down in Ifield
ACTION has been taken in Hyde Drive, Ifield, following concerns about traffic speed and pedestrian safety expressed by residents at the January meeting of West Crawley County Local Committee.
A report to the Committee says:
One: Sussex Police has confirmed that enforcement is underway and it recently issued six tickets to vehicles exceeding 40 mph.
Two: A pedestrian and vehicle count is to be undertaken to establish if the area by the new playground is suitable for a controlled crossing and to establish its priority on West Sussex County Council’s list of potential crossing locations.
Three: A speed survey was undertaken between March 7th and 14th and the results are now being analysed.
Four: School coach companies have been contacted about the relocation of the school bus pick up and drop off point.
Two future steps will include the local Police Community Support Officer assessing whether there is sufficient concern and interest from local residents to form a community speed watch group.
The local members for the area, County Councillor Chris Oxlade, and Crawley Borough Councillors Ali Burke and John Denman, along with a School Travel Advisor, will be meeting with the Headteacher at Mill School to investigate the possibility of the pupils designing road safety posters.
These posters would be displayed on selected lamp posts in Hyde Drive on a temporary basis for up to six weeks, as has been done in other areas of the county.
The report will be discussed at the Committee’s next meeting, which is being held on Thursday April 7th in the Longley Exhibition Room, Crawley Library, starting at 7pm.
Alan Quirk, Committee Chairman, said: “This is an opportunity for people to express their views on the report and the steps being taken to address concerns.”
Ifield residents are invited to a ‘meet your local councillor’ event next week where they can have their say on new neighbourhood facilities.
The event, at Dobbins Place, Ifield, takes place on Saturday February 26 from 10.30am-2pm.
Residents can discuss any issues they have their elected local representatives and tell them what they think about the use of community buildings for youth activities.
Visitors to the event can also find out more about the new multi-use games area (MUGA), exciting new play facilities on the way, how to join the new Ifield community group and help plan the 2011 Ifield Fun Day.
The long awaited new doctors surgery opened it’s doors to the public in style.

We felt it had been built with the people in mind and was done in the bet possible taste.

On Saturday 14th August, the first Ifield Fun Day kicked off in style.
Organised by Councillor Ali Burke and various member of Crawley Borough Council, the first Ifield fun day was visited by many. There was plenty to do, with a bouncy castle and Chase Fitness with their silly sports and a raffle, information stalls and of course Crawley’s most loved Ice Cream man Danny Ibrahim. Also attending raising money were Chris Oxlade and our dear friend Gary Morris. The Mill House supplied the food and drink while ‘Just Kelly’ came down to entertain all as a bumble bee on stilts. We also had a display of Irish dancing by some excellent and talented young ladies from various dance schools.
Not even the rain put a damper on the days event. Crawley Happy Times were invited down to have fun and meet some new and old faces. It was a great day and we would like to thank Ali for the invite. Well done to all involved. We look forward to next year. Hopefully the sun will shine all day for you then
We spoke to Councillor Ali Burke and Marie Ovenden who both told us about the team effort that had gone into making the day such a success. You can hear more in the interviews below.
Here are some clips of the Ifield Fun Day. Make sure you put it in your diary for next year! This year we had a self defence demonstration, a dance demonstration from the local Irish dance clubs and a great clip of the Mayor Lee Burke and Councillor Ali Burke in competition on the assort course, and much more. Crawley Happy Times went along for the fun.
“Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to the Ifield May Day Fayre”
Games, prizes, fun rides, music, demonstrations, dancing, singing, performances, food and drink. And it didn’t end there.
For those who attended the Ifield May Day Fayre at St Margarets Church and Ifield Barn Theatre, you will know what we are talking about. The event was well organised with plenty of variety to keep everyone happy. It was lovely to see children laughing and enjoying such simple rides such as the Boat Swings supplied by a school in Crawley, made by the caretaker some years back. The church supplied singing from various choirs and soloists, all exceptional. With stalls galore ranging from plants to food from local farmers, there was something for everyone. The May Day queen looked gorgeous!
The day went without a hitch. Even though the rain fell sporadically, this did not dampen the spirits of all who attended and organisers alike. We were, as always, honoured by the presence of our Mayor Brenda Burgess and Councillor Bob Burgess who brightened up the day with their friendly professional personalities.
We would like to thank everyone involved for making the day a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable day for us all. We had such a great day, we didn’t get a chance to get all the names of all who took part, which we apologies for.
We took some pictures and video for you to see. We would like to give special thanks to Alan Burgess of Ifield who kindly gave us permission to use his great photos taken on the day.
We are unsure why the video in the church is so blurred, but you can still hear how beautiful they sounded, so worth a listen! Watch out for when we get new video equipment lol!
Crawley Fire Station will be opening its doors to the public this Saturday (July 18), giving West Sussex residents an insight into the activities of their local firefighters.
The event will be held at the Fire Station on Ifield Avenue from 11am to 4pm and will have lots for all the family to enjoy. Refreshments will be available, along with face painting and rides on vintage fire engines for the family. Admission is free.
It’s also an opportunity for members of the public to see first hand the range of activities involved with being a modern firefighter, with demonstrations of fire fighting and rescue skills throughout the day.
Crews will be on hand to talk about fire safety in the home, at work and out and about. They will also demonstrate how they would release a casualty from a road traffic collision. The chip pan demonstration vehicle will be used throughout the day to show the dangers of chip pan fires.
The day will also provide the ideal occasion for the public to find out about West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service’s free Home Fire Safety Check Service.
