Friday, August 5th, 2011

The High Street’s first ever music festival is 16 days away.

High Street Live, which runs from 12 noon to 10pm on Sunday August 21, will fill the historic, cobbled road with music, food and drink.

More local music acts have been announced and the line-up now includes London Soul, Rubylux, My Tiger My Timing, Run Young Lovers, Lights of Paris, Bored Games, Andy Twyman, Jimi Squirrel, The Soundcheck, Franclassic, Erin Witton, Grace Saif and Best Intentions.

The Outfit

Matt Henry, of The Outfit, a show band which includes local teachers, said: “We’re stoked to be playing High Street Live as we all met in Crawley and three of us still live in Broadfield.”

Jeremy Taylor, of JerBil, said: “This will be a great day for Crawley residents to come out and enjoy the historic High street.

“We’re really looking forward to playing on the acoustic stage and to spend time enjoying the town in a different way. We’ve been involved with Mainstage in the Memorial Gardens for a number of years and this is another great community initiative from Tony “Mr Arts” Witton!”

Final plans are still being finalised but the main stage will be near the George Hotel while a smaller, acoustic area will be towards the northern end of the High Street.

The event is absolutely free, fun for all the family and hopes to showcase the High Street as an attractive town centre destination for everyone.

The festival is set to bring in folk from around the region to hear local bands while enjoying food and drink at High Street bars and restaurants.

The summer festival is organised by local man Tony Witton in partnership with Crawley Borough Council, Gatwick Airport Ltd, Crawley Town Centre Partnership and Crawley Festival.

The High Street’s first ever music festival takes place on this Sunday 21st August.

High Street Live, which runs from 12 noon to 10pm, will fill the historic, cobbled road with music, food and drink.

Main stage headliners London Soul comprise a brass section from the West End, stunning female backing singers and play an exciting repertoire featuring classic songs by Blues Brothers, Otis Reading through to Robbie Williams, Beyonce and The Killers.

Peter Olsen, London Soul’s band manager and keyboard player, said: “We are very excited to be part of the High Street Live and come back to our roots and play in Crawley.

“I myself used to teach at St. Wilfrid’s School where lead singer Kevin Chipol used to study; our trombonist Phill Hall teaches Music to the students of Oriel High so we are hoping to see lots of friendly faces. You may even recognise our newest face, Fiona Culley, from the BBC programme Geordie Finishing School for Girls.

“Thanks to Bar Med and the support of Samantha York and her staff, as well as Crawley Borough Council, we are lucky enough to play locally at the Bandstand and Bar Med throughout the year, but we are really excited to be part of High Street Live.”

The rest of the line-up includes Rubylux, My Tiger My Timing, Run Young Lovers, Lights of Paris, Bored Games, Andy Twyman, Jimi Squirrel, The Soundcheck, Franclassic, Erin Witton, Grace Saif and Best Intentions.

New Opportunity For Crawley To Officially Celebrate St George’s Day

New Opportunity For Crawley To Officially Celebrate St George’s Day

The publication last week of the Coalition Government’s Tourism Strategy will cut red tape, free up local businesses, and re-establish the tourism industry as a key priority for restoring the UK economy.

The proposals include a consultation on extending the tourist season by moving the first Bank Holiday in May to create a new St George’s Day holiday in England (and St David’s Day in Wales).

The strategy will generate an estimated four million extra overseas visitors over the next four years, bringing an extra £2 billion or more worth of visitor spend in to the country and creating over 50,000 new jobs.

Commenting on the publication of the strategy, Henry said, “I personally believe that our English national holiday, St George’s Day, should be officially established in a similar way to the fact, for example, that St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland and elsewhere. In fact I would like to see a St George’s Day parade through the centre of Crawley, perhaps passing our ancient George Hotel in the High Street.

“The Government’s Tourism Strategy could make a huge difference to the local economy here in Crawley, particularly with all that the town and Sussex has to offer, with our Borough being the home of the nation’s second gateway, Gatwick Airport.

“It is obviously too late to officially celebrate St George’s Day this April 23rd with a parade but my wish is that we can do this in 2012.”

A cup of Cha….Perfect

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Last Thursday Crawley Happy Times was invited down to the recently opened Cha Tea Room for a cup of tea and cake.

Pat Hollington, greeted us with a smile and politely showed us to a fine looking clean table and chairs where we sat comfortably.

Bright

This quaint, pretty room based in the George Hotel (to the left as you go in through the main doors and up a few steps) is just lovely. It holds a warm inviting atmosphere with great views out onto the High Street. The light streams in from the big windows filling the room, making it a perfect area to sit in with a good book whilst sipping hot tea and nibbling on a delicious cake. The menu also boasts of Bagels, croissants, gateauxs, paninis, toasted sandwiches and even beer and wine.

Crawley is missing a refined inexpensive peaceful area to relax in for a break from the hustle of the town. But no more! The Cha Tea Room fills this gap adequately. It makes a perfect addition to the George Hotels already well established services. Dating back to 1615 this former Coaching Inn, is steeped in history and character. The Cha Tea Room brings this character to life!

Pat told us Dawn, her daughter, runs the business but was unable to attend due to other commitments. Dawn was made redundent from Iceland leaving her at a loose end, when the owner of the George Hotel asked Pat if she knew anyone who might be looking to run a new venture. Pat instantly thought of Dawn and the rest is history. Along with Dawn’s father Marshall, who helps when he can, there is a real family feel to the business.

While we were visiting, we were joined by a couple who sat at another table to enjoy their first taste of the Cha Tea Room. They told us they thought is was a lovely concept with great service. The tea was hot and the cakes were delicious said the lady, adding, we will be back next week for sure.

Please show your support by visiting Dawn and Pat for tea at the Cha Team Room in the George Hotel. Any visit made in February will include a free cake with ever ‘pot for two’ bought. Please quote CHT3 when ordering and mention where you read about them :-)

We end by thanking Dawn and Pat for their hospitality. We wish them all the best for the future and look forward to visiting again soon.

We interviewed Pat and spoke briefly to the couple visiting the Cha Tea Room
