Ryan Smith, from Crawley, won a national competition via the Vauxhall Football Facebook site to play in a celebrity Football Fans fixture on the hallowed turf of Wembley

The two teams, managed by England legends Peter Shilton and Luther Blissett, were captained by former England internationals Rob Lee and Ray Parlour, in a game officiated by World Cup Final referee Howard Webb.

Organisers Vauxhall wanted to offer England fans a dream day to play at Wembley as part of their sponsorship of the FA.

Ryan, said; “Growing up everyone dreams about running out of the tunnel at Wembley and playing on the hallowed turf and thanks to Vauxhall and the FA that dream has become a reality.

“It isn’t every day that you play in a game where you are managed by an England legend, skippered by one of the best midfielders to play in the Premier League and refereed by the World Cup Final referee – it all seems like a bit of a dream really!”

Former England goalkeeper and manager on the day, Peter Shilton, said: “This was a great initiative by Vauxhall to offer real England fans the opportunity to play and experience what an amazing feeling it is running out at Wembley.  It was a great day and I really enjoyed myself.”

Vauxhall were announced as lead sponsors of all four Home Nations in January this year and this is the first in a number of initiatives designed at engaging with the supporters of each nation.

Vauxhall Marketing Director Peter Hope said; “Football is all about fans and we wanted to come up with a truly unique opportunity.

“In discussions with the FA, we developed an idea that gave the fans the chance to fulfil their dreams by playing at Wembley and it was a superb day for all involved.”
