A little goes a long way for charity

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Amanda Lund-Batchelor and her husband Duncan of Ananda Healing Limited felt compelled to donate a percentage of their companies earnings to a worthy charity and St Catherine’s is close too their hearts.

Ananda Healing Limited

For the last three years, Amanda and her husband Duncan have run a Holistics Therapy Practice called Ananda Healing Limited. They feel very passionate about peoples wellbeing and care and felt the synergee between the work they do and St Catherine’s to be very apt. Amanda and Duncan donate to one charity a year so when her father became ill and was cared for by the staff at St Catherine’s the connection become even more valuable. Amanda told us St Catherine’s has always been one of her favourite charities for the work they do, which extends to the families as well as the person who is unwell.

St Catherine’s Hospice:

St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.

For over 25 years we have been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey.  Hospice care is based on the belief that each person is more than their illness, and that each of us has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.  St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.

This highly personal, holistic approach to care takes time, skill and experience from a multi-professional team.  We care for people in the hospice, in their homes and in nursing homes.  We also provide training, advice and support to other health professionals.

The Donation:

Amanda and Duncan dedicated the month of September as their month for St Catherine’s, encouraging their clients to book in their treatments that month knowing a percentage of their money paid would then be donated to such a great charity. Amanda and Duncan raised a massive £160! Michael of St Catherine’s told us this is a staggering amount of money and gratefully received. Michael went on to tell us “this money could cover the cost of a patient to attend our Day Hospice for a week and a half, which makes such a difference. Every little helps and we are more than grateful to Ananda Healing for their donation”.

We would like to thank Amanda and Michael for talking to us. Well done to Ananda Healing for this very generous feat.

Why not dedicated a month to a charity of your choice and give a percentage of your earnings. If you choose to do this, Crawley Happy Times would like to hear from you :-)

Sainsbury’s lead the way for Guide Dogs

Monday, October 17th, 2011

On Friday 14th October, Sainsbury’s were awarded a certificate for their devotion, dedication and great achievement in raising money for Crawley Guide Dogs.

Attending were Jean Brookwell and Jason Howell from Sainsbury’s. Jan Dunn with guide dogs Elton and Tanner, Mick Mckeganey with guide dog Eddie and Henry Smith MP who are all fund raisers for Guide Dogs. Also present were Doug Branch with guide dog Baker who is the organiser for the charity events and Sharon Milani who is the treasurer.

We were celebrating the presentation of a certificate to Sainsbury’s Queensway for collecting £2507 since May 2011.  We have a target of £5,000 to Name A Puppy which we hope to reach within  the year of charity partnership.

This month Guide Dogs celebrated their 80th birthday!

Doug Branch told us “we have a ‘Name A Puppy’ running with The Parsons Pig pub on the Balcombe Road who are raising money with a monthly pub quiz, golf days and fun days as well as comedy nights at Crawley Rugby Club.  Their total raised so far is £2,894 over the last 13 months!”.

It was an honour to meet the guide dogs and their owners and would like to thank Sainsbury’s and all who support this worthy charity for their dedication. Would you like to help? If so please visit their website here.

We would also like to thank Henry Smith for helping with the interview. He was very good, don’t you think :-)

‘Help Our Wounded Royal Marines’ are in training

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Five men have come together to raise money for their chosen charity ‘Help Our Wounded Royal Marines’, formed by Chris Stubbings BEM in March 2010.

Quote from the facebook page:

HELP OUR WOUNDED is a fundraising arm for The Royal Marines Association, Charity Number 206003. HOW was formed on the 4th March 2010 because of the number of seriously injured Royal Marines returning from operational tours in Afghanistan Iraq and other areas of armed conflict. HELP OUR WOUNDED is a community based effort seeking to help the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (Registered Charity No 1134205), meet it’s target of raising £6M by the 350th anniversary of the Corps in October 2014. A Campaign Board has been established to coordinate the Corps Family effort working towards this testing target and HELP OUR WOUNDED is represented on that board.

What, when and where

On December the 3rd and 4th Dave Lilburn MBE, Stuart Baldwin, Cai Ives, Stuart Bourne and Stuart Power will be pulling a sledge from London to Brighton to help raise awareness and funds for this great charity.

Quote from the facebook page:

Myself (Stuart Bourne, Regional Fund Raiser for the South Eat) along with David Lilburn,Cai Ives,Stuart Baldwin and Stuart Power will be pulling a sledge to rasie funds for HELP OUR WOUNDED ROYAL MARINES over the weekend stopping at Crawley where there will be a fundraisng event on the Saturday evening. We have also enlisted some Santa Helpers as traffic guides (Reserves) and these are : Gay Wise, Andy Hains, Dale Lilburn and Ashton Lilburn.

As well as raising funds we will be asking for donations of xmas presents so that we may pass these onto the children of those brave Royals who have given their lives and will not be around this xmas so please lets do all we can to try and raise a smile and show we do care and will never forget them.

We hope as many people will join in around the country and mirror what we are doing. We would like this to become an annual event, so take up the challenge and get pulling for HELP OUR WOUNDED ROYAL MARINES.

We wish them all the best

Shelley was invited down to the martial arts school Lumpini in Priestley Way, Crawley to speak to the men involved. We also spoke to John Jarvis who is a trainer at Lumpini who have offered to train the men to full fitness for the event. John told us they were more than honoured to help the men get fit for this feat and to support them in many more ways, including giving them a stall at their forthcoming Muaythai Boxing event happening this Saturday at Effingham Park Hotel. More details can be found here.

We would like to wish them all the best. We will be covering their arrival into Crawley on December 3rd. Please show your support in any way you can.

A colourful event for Kaana

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

On Saturday 16th July at The Corner Cafe (in St Andrews Church, Furnace Green) the Mayor Carol Eade was the guest of honour. The event was in aid of Kaana a UK registered charity working in Uganda to stop babies begging on the streets of Kampala. A similar event last year with an attendance of over 60 women all from Crawley. Headed up by Maureen Mwagale the event was attended by many.

All the women were dressed in African dress including Mayor Carol Eade.

We sent Shelley down to experience the event. The food was amazing, the company was great and the event was well worth a visit.

We took some pictures of the event for you to enjoy.

Relay for Life 2011

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

On Saturday 9th July the fourth annual Relay for Life set yet another great pace.

With thirty two teams ready to walk the course for the next twenty four hours, Laura Senekal and Darren Bow took to the stage to kick off this amazing ceremony. The teams have worked tirelessly to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

A special mention to our good friend Jules Neale who attended in support and as Captain of Team Yummy even though she has recently been very unwell with a back injury. Although the pampering administered was well worth the effort, wasn’t it Jules :-) And of course, a big thank you to all those, who are still under treatment but came to support and walk the course. Amazing!

Laura wrote this for us:

Well, what can I say? What a weekend!

This is the 4th year Crawley has hosted a Relay For Life and this has been the most amazing event yet. This year we had 32 teams sign up for Relay and together they have so far managed to raise a staggering £68,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Relay For Life is a 24 hour event where teams of friends, family or colleagues take it in turns to walk for a full 24 hours as a sign that cancer doesn’t sleep. All around the track the team have stalls and fundraise furiously during the day. This year we had everything from cakes to a hog roast and tombola’s to tattoos. Even the rain could not stop the cash coming in! During this 24 hours the teams managed to bring in over £12K!!!!! Thank you Crawley!

This year we were supported by some really amazing people who came along to entertain our teams and the public. These included Flying High, Crawley Black Belt Academy, The Nickie Poslad School of Dance, Fi Steps & ACE Irish Dance Academy. We were also lucky enough to enjoy some fantastic local music talent from Solice, The Matt McConnon Band, Chinchilla Zilla, the Songbirds Choir and our very own firstaider Phil singing with Six Till Midnight.

Now, although the day sees us all enjoying a bit of a mini carnival /festival the evening really reminds us of why we are there. When the sun sets we all take part in a candle of hope ceremony, our walking track is lined with candle bags, all dedicated to people to have fought cancer. It is a time to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of our loved ones. This year we had a special memorial for our good friend Morag Clapp who left us just after last year’s event. This year we also heard a beautiful poem written and read by one of our survivors, Cheryl Ross along with the Songbirds singing ‘I’ll Stand By You’, Shannon Stocker singing a beautiful version of ‘Dance with my Father’, and Aimee Bow finishing the ceremony off with a very emotional rendition of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

NB: We sped up some of the walking so you could see more :-)

I am so very lucky to have such fantastic support from the Relay committee who all come and gave their time for free as did our first aiders (SceneSafe) and the local scouts who kept everyone fed and watered for the full 24 hours….you are all absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!! And a massive thank you to Matt Pay and HSS Hire who donated all the electrical equipment we needed for the day.

I am so very grateful to everyone that took part, raised funds or just came down to see what Relay was all about, already we are seeing interest from new teams for 2012! Next year we may even theme Relay in line with the Olympics…..who knows J.

Why not go and have a look at our website (www.relayforlifecrawley.org) or add us on facebook to be updated with local relay news?

The Westys Warriors always climb in style

Looking gorgeous ladies

 The Journey to the top!

On the way up

10.52am

We are now thirty seven minutes into the climb. The weather is good, in fact a bit too hot but we are hoping it will be cooler further up. The Warriors are all in good shape and making good time.

The stunning view of Mount Snowdon

The Westys Warriors at the top of Mount Snowdon

13.05

We made it to the top in two hours and forty minutes and we are now making our way back down at a steady jog. We are going to really smash the previous record at this rate. We are all in good shape and Bazza is loving his birthday.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

The Warriors have yet again smashed another mission. Bazza beat his personal best and the team were awesome. The comaradary was amazing and Bazza is elated. We would like to thank Crawley Happy Times and all their readers for their support, it really made Bazza’s birthday outstanding and one to remember :-)

The WARRIORS along with 16 other teams conquered Mount Snowdon and in doing so helped raise a fantastic £50,000 for the BACK UP TRUST.

The Westys Warriors smashed the last record set personally by Bazza. They conquered Mount Snowdon in four hours and fourteen minutes compared to the last time of six hours and twenty minutes! They were the fastest team in history to reach the summit and descend with a person with a high level C4/5 complete injury (in lament terms this means a person who only has the use of their head).

We here at Crawley Happy Times would like to congratulate all involved. Your efforts in raising money for the back Up Trust is just amazing. We salute you all, especially our dear friend Bazza :-) xx

Crawley MP Supports Big Society Fund For Local Voluntary Sector

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Crawley MP Supports Big Society Fund For Local Voluntary Sector

Henry Smith MP has welcomed the news that money from the Government’s Big Society Transition Fund will support the local voluntary sector. The funding, part of the third wave of payouts from the £107 million Transition Fund, is being paid out to Crawley Home-Start.

Although three quarters of charities receive no public funding, the Government is determined to protect those charities, such as Crawley Home-Start, which are most vulnerable to public spending cuts.

Henry said:

“I’m pleased that the Government is committed to supporting charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises across the South East despite the necessity of dealing with Labour’s disastrous economic legacy.

“It’s great to hear that Crawley Home-Start, which does important work to offer early intervention to families with children under 5 offering support services to those suffering from a variety of difficulties including isolation, depression, substance abuse and financial problems, will receive £34,602 in funding.”

The local Broadfield based Scheme Manager for Crawley Home-Start, Liz Roe, said:

“Like many other organizations, we have been adversely affected by the current economic situation and we have struggled to find the necessary funds to maintain our work.

“We were, therefore, very pleased to be awarded a grant from the Transition Fund. Although this cannot be used to fund our service to families directly it can be used to plan for a more sustainable future for the Scheme. We will, therefore, plan expenditure carefully with the aim of ensuring that the scheme is around for a long time to come and vulnerable families in our area can continue to receive the support they desperately need.”

The Cabinet Secretary responsible for the fund, Horsham MP Francis Maude, also chipped in to say:

“We all want a bigger, stronger society where people get involved and do their bit. This isn’t new – there are already loads of people right across Britain taking responsibility and making our communities better places to live. What is new is that this Government is making it easier for people to do more: giving people power to improve public service, putting communities in control, and supporting people to help others.”

The Transition Fund provides grants to these organisations to allow them to prepare for the future opportunities opened up by the Big Society. The money will fund the crucial changes that charities need to make to take advantage of the new opportunities available to them from opening up public sector contracts. So far more than 900 charities nationally have received support from the Transition Fund.

Small Charity Week 20th – 24th June 2011

Small Charity Week 20th – 24th June 2011

Small Charity Week is next week so we’re sending you a quick email to make sure you are prepared to make the most of it.

The organisers of the week – the Foundation for Social Improvement – have given each day a theme so that you may focus your activities unilaterally with other small charities taking part. Use the week to give your fundraising a boost, launch a new campaign, get more support for you and your charity or maybe (and probably most importantly) at the very least make sure you celebrate being a small charity and all the good work you do. Simply use the week and the increased media exposure to promote your charity to whatever end suits you. It’s there to use in any way you like.

Below are the five themes for Small Charity Week and by clicking on the theme title, you’ll be directed to the Small Charity Week website and more information about that day. Also below is a bit about what we at the Small Charities Coalition and Charity Trustee Networks are doing for the week (e.g. launch of trustee matching pilots, new consultation groups to shape the direction of our charity and our new partnership with Google) so we hope that you can get involved in one way or another.

Monday 20 June – I Love Small Charities Day

We’re putting an extra effort behind supporting all areas of your charity with the pilot launch of an exciting new Trustee Matching Service. This service will give trustees specialist support through 1-2-1 and group matching, giving you the opportunity to share skills, experiences and best practice with other trustees. At the moment we’re looking for interested trustees to get in touch with Elise elise.austin@smallcharities.org.uk. In the coming days we’ll launch a webpage (www.smallcharities.org.uk/trusteematching) with more information and more opportunities to take part so watch this space.

Tuesday 21 June – The Big Advice Day

Get an answer to that burning question with hourly consultations happening throughout the day with top experts in all professional fields, including some of our best supporters. All you need to do is complete a registration form at www.smallcharityweek.com/big-advice-day and you’ll be contacted to set up an appointment either remotely or in person. If Tuesday doesn’t work for you, don’t forget that advice and support is available all the time through our skills matching services www.smallcharities.org.uk/matching

Wednesday 22 June – Policy Day

As a newly merged organisation, we’re having a review of what services small charities and their trustees want and need. We’re going to hold some focus groups in the next few months so get in touch if you’d like to help us understand more about what you want and how you want it. Contact our CEO Cath Lee to express your interest cath.lee@smallcharities.org.uk

Thursday 23 June – Fundraising Day

If you feel isolated in your efforts to keep your charity’s head above water, why not link up with other fundraisers and take part in our group support service which give you the chance to receive support through peer-to-peer sharing and learning of each others skills and experiences. Visit our website www.smallcharities.org.uk/groupsupport for more information about how they work or you sign up for one of the new groups starting this autumn by emailing Elise at elise.austin@smallcharities.org.uk and specifying the topic area you’d like support in and where in the UK you are based.

Friday 24 June – Celebration Day

We’re having our own little celebration today as we announce our new partnership with Google. Google are coming on board as a supporting organisation, giving their staff time to share their skills, experience and resources with our members. If you’d like to get matched with a Google member of staff (or Googler as they call themselves) then complete the following short form and then we’ll be in touch http://www.clicktools.com/survey?iv=3913074d4b086e9

Also, as part of Celebration Day we will be joining in the festivities down at London’s South Bank so come along, meet other small charities and have a bit of a PARTY!

Could you become a rights of way volunteer?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Could you become a rights of way volunteer?

An event on becoming a West Sussex public rights of way volunteer ranger or parish path inspector takes place on Sunday June 12.

It’s being held at Dial Post Village Hall, Old Worthing Road, Dial Post, RH13 8ND, from 2pm to 4pm.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer will be able to find out more about the role and speak to officers from West Sussex County Council to learn how they can help to keep rights of way accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart said: “Volunteers play a vital role in the maintenance and upkeep of the county’s rights of way network.

“In West Sussex we have 2,530 miles of public rights of way, allowing access into some fascinating, unspoilt and diverse landscapes.”

Volunteers are being offered various opportunities to be involved as they wish, by helping with inspections of paths, or undertaking supported practical tasks to improve access and address problems identified by residents and visitors.

The County Council runs an ongoing inspection and maintenance programme to ensure the rights of way network stays as safe, open and usable as possible. Every right of way is inspected every nine months, followed by the completion of any identified maintenance.

Volunteer Parish Inspectors receive full training and have an input in the prioritising of works as well as providing vital local knowledge.

Practical tasks are planned well in advance so volunteers can choose which practical sessions they would like to be involved with.

Deborah added: “Volunteers can be involved with installing bridges, signposts, gates and steps, as well as clearing vegetation.”

For further information about the event or volunteering for parish path inspections or practical tasks, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Darren Rolfe on 07793 187893 or e-mail darren.rolfe@westsussex.gov.uk

Football raises more funds for flood victims

MP Henry Smith

Crawley Borough Council staff worked with local young people to organise a six-a-side football tournament to raise more than £4,000 for Pakistan’s flood victims.

The tournament, at K2 Crawley, was supported by 12 teams and played in front of large crowds. Stalls selling Islamic calligraphy, art paintings and Henna painting added to the fundraising and a total of £4,150 has now been raised.

K2 Crawley provided the conference rooms and all football pitches throughout the day for free and Crawley Borough Council provided posters and support throughout the event.

There are now 20 million people affected by the floods in Pakistan and survivors face the added threat of deadly waterborne diseases.

So far Disaster Emergency Committee members have helped nearly three million people but much more money and resources are required to reach the millions more.

You can continue to donate by visiting www.justgiving.com/crawleyfundraiser

West Sussex County Council Reaction To Spending Review

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

West Sussex County Council Reaction To Spending Review

West Sussex County Council has started the task of analysing the mass of detail behind the headlines from today’s Spending Review statement by the Chancellor George Osborne.

Leader Louise Goldsmith said:

“I want to make it clear that we support the Government’s determination to reduce the national deficit, and build a more sustainable economy for the long term.

“No one has ever pretended this will be easy, and that local government is immune.

“Today is not the time for knee-jerk reactions. That is not the way we operate in West Sussex.

“We do need time to study the mass of detail that always follows a major announcement such as this.

“There will be as full a report as possible to the full Council meeting in December. This will be followed by the Select Committee scrutiny process of what is being proposed, before we set our budget and council tax for 2011/2012 in February.

“We have already made it clear that we aim to make budget savings of £75 million over the next three years of which a part will be reducing bureaucracy.

“We are determined to protect front-line services as far as possible, and continue striving to do more with less.

“I want to assure people that the very weak and vulnerable in society will be a priority and we will also do all we can to mitigate any cuts by working with our partners to support our communities.

“Today is just part of a complicated jigsaw. First, we need time to properly analyse the full details of the Chancellor’s announcement. Then we have to wait for the Department for Communities and Local Government to tell us exactly how much grant towards our services West Sussex will be getting over the next three years. The final settlement details are not expected until late in November or early December.

“We have already shown that we are very successful in driving down costs because our review of services has so far led savings of £150 million over the last four years.

“We will also be actively pursuing the ‘Big Society’ agenda because we are truly all in this together. We want to work co-operatively with our local communities, town and parish councils, the voluntary and charity sectors, and other interested groups, to help get things done.

“We welcome the announcement that the Government is moving away from ring fencing almost all grants for specific purposes from next April.

“It will give us much more freedom and flexibility to decide our own priorities with our local communities.”

On a freeze in council tax, she said: “We have been steadily reducing the percentage increase in council tax during recent years. We fully support reducing the burden on taxpayers even further during these very difficult times for all households. We will be working to deliver a budget that will mean a zero tax rise.”

Louise also welcomed the increased spending on schools with reduced ring fencing.

She said: “I believe that schools will also welcome the greater freedom to spend money where they believe it is essential.”

Football to raise more funds for flood victims

Crawley Borough Council, Freedom Leisure and Crawley Town FC are supporting community members to organise a charity six-a-side football tournament on Sunday October 17, raising funds for Pakistan’s flood victims.

The tournament, at K2 Crawley, will also see stalls set up selling goods to raise more money for the good cause.

There are now 20 million people affected by the floods in Pakistan and survivors face the added threat of deadly waterborne diseases.

So far Disaster Emergency Committee members have helped nearly three million people but much more money and resources are required to reach the millions more.

If you want to take part in the tournament call Adam Welton, Youth and Community Outreach Officer, on 01293 438708 or email adam.welton@crawley.gov.uk or Haroon Khalil on 07878 668013.

The Hawth is Going Global once again

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The Hawth is Going Global once again

£99,999 Arts Council Grant

The Hawth Crawley is delighted to announce that it has secured a grant of £99,999 supported by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England to develop and promote Going Global II, an audience development programme designed to offer audiences culturally diverse and international work in Crawley over the next two years.

Going Global II will give The Hawth the chance to further its programme of culturally diverse and international performances. The theatre will continue to showcase South Asian and African-Caribbean work while developing programming for emerging communities including Eastern European and Portuguese. The grant will also enable The Hawth to commission and co-produce culturally diverse work specifically for children to enjoy and to bring diverse communities together.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services at Crawley Borough Council, said: “This is fantastic news and I’m delighted that we will be offering even more culturally diverse and international work at The Hawth. I hope the securing of this funding and the new programme enables more people to experience the arts locally.”

Sally Abbott, Regional Director, Arts Council England, said: “The Arts Council believes that the arts should be enjoyed by as many people as possible, and a project that seeks to widen engagement fits in with our mission of great art for everyone. We are delighted to be supporting this project and look forward to seeing people across Crawley enjoying the arts.”

Shows already set to attract the crowds include Tavaziva Dance’s Wild Dog capturing the beauty and elegance of Africa as part of Black History Month, The Jingle Dress which will transport little ones to Native America and there will be breathtaking dance in The Shiver which combines classical Indian dance and poetry by acclaimed poet and playwright Lemn Sissay. In the coming years The Hawth hopes to engage almost 200 artists, performers and theatre companies in order to attract new audiences with shows and workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience different cultures and create links with different communities.

This grant has also created an exciting new role at The Hawth as the theatre are now looking for an Audience Development Assistant to actively promote Going Global and co-ordinate community projects for the next two years. Anyone interested in the role can express an interest by emailing info@hawth.co.uk for more information.

Charity is on the Revive

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

On Saturday 18th September a new charity shop is opening in Crawley. Shelley went along to have a chat with the organiser Debra Dowding to see what is all about.

Debra has worked tirelessly to get the shop in the High Street (next to Santander). Debra who is a member of the Crawley Community Church told us “it’s a charity shop with a difference. We had to wait a year to get it, but we are very glad we did”. We asked Debra the reason for opening Revive. Debra said “it’s to help raise funds for the church. Currently, we do not have enough money to do all the different types of ministries such as debt counselling, pregnancy counselling and many more. We are here to help others but it all takes money”.

The Crawley Community Church has been helping and assisting the community of Crawley for the last thirty years. Debra went on to say the shop will be much more than just a charity shop. It will include crochet and knitting lessons, story telling mornings for the children and much more. Debra told us “we want people to enjoy coming into the shop”.

Revive has a friendly and welcoming feel to it and it’s retro theme is very quaint and attractive. Please put Saturday 18th September in your diary to pop along in support.

If you have any goods or clothes you would like to donate to Revive, please take it to the shop and leave round the back if closed. Please also only donate goods that can be re-sold as Revive have to pay for goods to be taken away, which defeats the object if they have to do so. Thank you :-)

We would like to thank Debra for inviting us down and we wish them all the success for the future :-)

Cash available for crime fighting projects

YOUNG people in West Sussex who have come up with ideas to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood still have time to see if they are eligible for a grant of up to £1000.

Grants are available from the West Sussex Safer Place Awards, which are organised by the West Sussex Strategic Community Partnership.

In the past, Safer Place Awards cash was given to initiatives that had captured the attention of judges at an annual event designed to showcase projects devised by young people throughout West Sussex.

Greg Ockwell, of West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety Unit, said: “We want to encourage and support young people to help tackle the issues that matter most to them. So now we are offering the money upfront.

“The Safer Place Awards are designed to empower and equip young people to tackle crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods by becoming a confident and responsible citizens.”

A short-list of the most outstanding projects will be invited to a final event at Slaugham Manor on the 13 May 2011.

“This will give them the opportunity to present their project and also a chance to win the West Sussex High Sheriff’s Crimebeat Award and go forward to the national finals – last year, we came third.”

“All you need to do is submit an application form which can be downloaded from The Safer Places Awards pages on the County Council website: www.westsussex.gov.uk. The closing date is November 15.”

Peter Evans, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “The Safer Place Awards highlight the benefit of initiatives that reach out and involve the communities. In the past they have covered a wide range of issues – from misusing drugs to encouraging social cohesion.

“I am confident we will again see another wide range of exciting and imaginative projects from our young people.”

Steve had a hair-y-less day

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Steve Hayward had his long hair shaved off in support of his son and to raise much needed funds for charity.

On Friday 27th August Steve Hayward of Crawley had a slightly different day at his place of work.  Just three weeks ago Steve’s son David was diagnosed with leukemia and has since lost all his hair. Steve felt compelled to have all his long hair shaved off in support of his son whilst raising over £2000 for Cancer Research UK.

Steve works for PMA in Horsham and told us “other members of staff have also been touched by cancer so they were more than willing to let us use the forcourt to raise money.

Trisha, David’s Mum said “we are specifically targeting teenage cancer because of David”. Trisha went on to explain that David had not been well for some time. The doctors told them David had a virus but it seemed to get worse, so they persisted and another doctor at Redhill Hospital diagnosed David with acute lymphacytic Leukemia.

Family and friends were present to help raise money. Some were busy cleaning cars, cooking the BBQ, selling some delicious cakes made by Trisha and even face painting. And to really set the day off they all dressed up too! Everyone present stood with encouragement as Steve had all his hair removed.

We would like to say a massive well done to Steve. Although we could tell the emotion was getting to him as the time drew closer for the big chop (as it would anyone) but we think Steve did a great deed. In our opinion a bald head really suited him!

If anyone wishes to donate to Steve’s charity raising efforts please visit here. Do remember, every little counts. We want to wish young David a full recovery :-) xx

Interview with the Hayward Family:

These pictures where kindly donated to us by Jules Neale, who is related to Steve and felt she had to be there to support the whole family. Thank you Jules :-) xx

Crawley Tigers to raise more cash for Pakistani flood victims

Crawley Tigers FC raised more than £4,100 for the victims of the Pakistani flood disaster by washing cars on Saturday (August 14) – but they’re not stopping there.

The local football club, fresh from cleaning lots of dirty cars at the mosque in Broadfield on Broadwood Rise, is supporting a six-a-side football tournament next month for leading charities.

The charity car wash brought in more than £1,400 in donations on the day, with the extra £2,700 donated via the Justgiving web page for the event. This page – at www.justgiving.com/CrawleyTigersFC-carwash – will remain live until Friday September 3.

According to UN estimates 20 million people need humanitarian assistance – more than the scale of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

More details about the football tournament will be released at the start of September.
