Celebrity Chef Spotted at Local Restaurant
Leading food writer, critic, TV chef and Britain’s foremost authority on Asian food, Pat Chapman, was spotted dining at Zari Bar and Restaurant this week. Located on Ifield drive, Zari Restaurant has recently shot up on the radar of some of the UK’s finest food critics so the owners, Almara and Sadique Miah, were thrilled to see Mr. Chapman coming in the door.
Almara Miah said “Pat is a veteran television presenter and regularly cooks curry on GMTV’s This Morning, C4′s Big Breakfast, UK Living’s Live at Three, and BBC’s ‘Food and Drink’, so while I had never met him personally, I instantly recognized him.
“He said he enjoyed his meal and even asked to visit our kitchens. Our chefs were really pleased to show him around and to have the opportunity of meeting him in person. Pat’s visit is a great endorsement of the standard of food and service we provide.”
When asked about his visit to Zari, Pat Chapman said: “Crawley is lucky to have a restaurant which transcends the curry house formula. Zari transports its diners to the culinary regions of India with accuracy. If it was closer to my home it would certainly become my local.”
Pat Chapman is also a contributing editor to Tandoori Magazine, editor of the Cobra Good Curry Guide and has written for the Independent, Daily Telegraph and BBC’s Good Food Magazine.

Read All About It – Crawley’s first ever festival of words

There’s a host of events to celebrate Crawley’s first ever festival celebrating words and writing.
‘WORDfest’, which runs from Saturday April 2 till Saturday April 9, is led by Crawley Library and the town’s Waterstones bookshop.
Throughout the week there will be author talks and signings at the Library, including world-famous novelist Wilbur Smith on Tuesday April 5, at 4.30pm, and local author Alex Preston, who wrote the festival’s chosen book ‘Bleeding City’ on Saturday April 9 at 7pm. Tickets for both events are £3.
There will be some week-long activities, including ‘Fun Days’, where people can design a new cover for their favourite book, and a live writing exhibition. This will see a different author every day being given a blank writing pad, pen and laptop and have to produce a short story inspired by different one word themes. On the sixth day, an illustrator will design an image for each story.
Both these events will be held at Waterstones in the County Mall and people can come along and see the authors in action.
If you want to know how to self-publish a book, visit the Library on Friday April 8 at 6pm to speak to Keith Churchouse, Alan Gilliand and Christine Mustchin, who are all self-published authors and will give advice and information. Tickets cost £3.
Other venues will be hosting events. At The Hawth Studio on Tuesday April 5, there will be a free special WORDfest Open Mic night. The cream of Crawley’s talent will be there, including ‘Pighog Press’ poet Anthony Owen. Anyone who would like to recite someone’s else’s work, or read their own work can come along the night and put their name down.
Keith Blake, West Sussex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries, said: “In an age where television and film is so popular, it’s vital to remember the importance of reading, writing and being creative – and WORDfest will do this.
“With a wide range of events and activities, some of them free, there will be something for everyone, and it’s a great opportunity to share information, be creative, meet new people and gain advice from the professionals.”

A WICKED way to get pupils learning first aid
Sussex St John Ambulance is urging local schools to join a WICKED partnership designed to get more school pupils learning the skills needed to save a life.
The nation’s leading first aid charity has teamed up with the award-winning West End musical WICKED to launch teachthedifference.org.uk – a groundbreaking project to help schools teach first aid at little or no cost.
For a limited period St John Ambulance and WICKED will be offering a free Young First Aider teaching guide worth £30 to schools which register with the new web site.
In a recent survey 94% of teachers said first aid lessons in school would help make young people more responsible. But one in three teachers said cost was the biggest obstacle to teaching first aid*.

Sussex St John Ambulance Schools Officer Sarah Holmes said: ‘It’s crucial that young people are taught to make the right choices and learning how to save lives is a perfect example.
‘Working with WICKED means that we can offer teachers a uniquely engaging, free resource to give them extra support a time when they’re likely to be under pressure to cut spending.’
Up to 150,000 people die each year** when first aid could have given them a chance to live.
Schools have a key role to play in reducing this shocking level of unnecessary deaths but only a small percentage of the eight million children and 450,000 teachers in the UK are first aid trained..
Recent research by St John Ambulance reveals that 70% of people in the South East think that schools are the best places to learn first aid.
Sussex St John Ambulance will be providing first aid courses in 27 local schools during the summer term. Every school in the county will be sent an information pack about the charity’s courses and how they can be used as part of the National Curriculum.
WICKED Executive Producer Michael McCabe said: ‘We’ve always been inspired by St John Ambulance’s determination that nobody should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.’
‘More than 250,000 pupils have seen the show over the last five years and the lead character Elphaba has become an ideal role model for them because of her high moral standing and spirit to stand up for what she believes is right.’
‘In difficult situations young people can now look to the figure of Elphaba to ask ‘What would Elphaba do?’. When pupils are given this confidence, along with the skills to save a life, it makes for a very powerful combination.’

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA
Return to The Hawth
English Touring Opera returns to The Hawth, Crawley with an exciting programme featuring the UK première tour of an opera based on Roald Dahl’s book, Fantastic Mr Fox by Tobias Picker alongside rarely-performed masterpieces by Mozart and Puccini.
Fantastic Mr Fox (Thur 31 March, 7pm, performed in English) explores the relationship between man and nature – pitting three farmers and their digger (played by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Fiona Kimm) against a fox and his family. Cunning to the last, Mr Fox (played by exciting young baritone Nicholas Merryweather) devises a plan to “outfox” the blundering villains.
The production, directed by ETO’s award-winning artistic associate Tim Yealland, features professional soloists alongside 21 local school children from St Andrews C of E Primary School, Furnace Green who play a skulk of fox cubs and a chorus of trees. ETO’s production is the UK première of the full version of Tobias Picker’s adaptation of Roald Dahl short story, with a libretto by Donald Sturrock.
On Friday 1 April, 7.30pm, ETO presents a performance featuring two, one-hour long Puccini operas performed in Italian/English subtitles. These two short works, Il tabarro and Gianni Schicchi are Puccini’s most perfect and perfectly contrasting masterpieces. Il tabarro is a moody, grotesque thriller that takes place on barge in Paris and Gianni Schicchi, a sparkling Florentine comedy.
Completing the Spring season in Crawley is La clemenza di Tito on Saturday 2 April at 7.30pm, a bold production of a rarely-performed masterpiece by Mozart (performed in English /a captioned performance). ETO has a proud history of presenting exceptional productions of Mozart at The Hawth, the last being The Marriage of Figaro in spring last year. Bringing this colourful production to Crawley is a cast of fearless singers, including Julia Riley (acclaimed in ETO’s past production of Anna Bolena) playing Sesto, who is torn between his loyalty to the emperor Titus (Mark Wilde) and his love for Vitellia (Gillian Ramm).
Tickets: £27, £16.50 (discounts: £25). Book for two operas: £42, book for three operas: £60.
Fantastic Mr Fox: Schools: £9 each, Family of three: £40.50, Family of four: £50.
Free pre-show talks prior to the operas on Friday and Saturday at 6.30pm. Please reserve in advance at the Box Office.

Young people from Bewbush Youth Centre have left their mark on the regeneration of Dorsten Square by creating a graffiti art cube.
Working with local graffiti artist, Skribblez, young people took part in design workshops at Bewbush youth centre and used their new skills to create the graffiti art over a few weekends.
The cube, a small sub-station owned and maintained by EDF Energy and located opposite the new Bewbush Centre, has been transformed into a bright and colourful display featuring original designs.
The youngsters were particularly interested in the theme of anti-crime and worked with the artist on finding relevant images they felt would give a positive message to the community.
Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a fantastic piece of art which highlights the breadth of talent in our youngsters that needs to be encouraged across the borough as a whole. I’d like to think it helps to highlight the need for some careful consideration of the potential impact of the youth services review.”
He added: “I know people’s taste in art differs widely but this shows our youngsters in a really positive light and at their creative best. It means the area has a piece of contemporary art which reflects them and gives them a real sense of ownership in their area.”
The work was part of the area’s regeneration and was coordinated by Crawley Council staff with support from West Sussex County Council Youth Service.
The designs on the graffiti cube will be staying put until early summer when the local artist will be coming back to work with the young people to create new designs so that the cube is kept up to date and clean.

Crawley MP Urges “Certainty and Clarity” Over The Future Of Crawley’s Youth Services
Following a meeting Henry Smith requested with the West Sussex Leader, Louise Goldsmith, and newly appointed Cabinet Member for Children & Young Peoples Services, Peter Evans, at County Hall on Friday regarding the future of youth provision in Crawley, Henry Smith said, “Over a year ago when I was still Leader of West Sussex, a suggestion was put to me that to reduce costs, in light of poor funding from the previous Government, one option would be to close youth centres across the county. I rejected that idea because of the harm it would do to the support young people need and the negative impact such closures would have on local neighbourhoods – such a policy would be a false economy anyway.
“Over last summer I was therefore concerned that County Hall seemed to be reconsidering such an option. Despite an assurance at the time that ‘no youth centre need close’ I have remained troubled that confusion over the future of the youth centres has gone on for far too many months now.
“We need certainty and clarity over the future of Crawley’s youth centres, such as those at Oriel High School and Ifield Community College and this is what I told County bosses. I think there is an opportunity to bring more people in to providing youth services – in true Big Society style – and that spirit I’m pleased that a meeting with Crawley Borough has been promised for next week.
“The public finances are in a dire state due to the last Government incurring a £2 trillion debt – but this shouldn’t mean a simple cut but rather better, more innovative ways of working and I know that’s what local authorities and local people can achieve in Crawley for the future of youth provision.”
Henry Smith has said on many occasions over the last year that no youth centre should or need to close.

Schools urged to showcase life saving skills
Schools in Sussex are being urged to come forward to take part in a national schools first aid competition – and help equip the next generation with invaluable skills.
The St John Ambulance National Schools’ First Aid Competition encourages school teams to battle it out for the title by carrying out first aid in a variety of real life settings.
The contest – held in regional rounds followed by a national competition in London in June 2011 – tests youngsters’ first aid knowledge, treatment and teamwork.
The search is now on for more schools first aid teams to take part. Teams of four plus a reserve can enter junior and senior categories and take part in regional heats to be held in Horsham on 5 and 6 May 2011. If successful in the regional round they then go through to the national final, which takes place at the Natural History Museum in London on 29 June. Teams must have completed levels from the St John Ambulance Young First Aider course and need to have entered by 28 February.
Elaine Howlings, responsible for schools training at St John Ambulance, said: ‘First aid improves self-esteem, develops confidence and fosters a sense of belonging and service. Nearly 7 out of 10 pupils said they wouldn’t know what to do if someone they knew was hurt, yet 72% of these children would like to learn first aid and 83% said they would feel more confident helping those around them if they were taught first aid. We would urge as many schools as possible to take part in our young first aider training and compete in our national schools competitions, so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.’
Pam Leadbeater of Tanbridge House School in Horsham, where the competition is to be held said: ‘Tanbridge has great pride in hosting this competition and supporting St John Ambulance. The knowledge that our students gain through St John, both through the school clubs and in lessons, could one day help them save lives therefore the competition is a fantastic thing to be a part of.’
St John Ambulance teaches valuable life skills to young people by training them in first aid, in schools and through its youth schemes. More than 600,000 pupils are trained each year in schools across the country.
All participants need to have learnt first aid skills through the Young First Aider Course – St John Ambulance’s interactive training pack which is easy for teachers and pupils to use. There is still time for schools to sign up for the Young First Aider Course and take part in the competitions.
For more information and to enter the competitions or to contact your county schools liaison officer, telephone 08700 10 49 50 or visit www.sja.org.uk or www.teachthedifference.org.uk

WORK ON BMX TRACK SET TO START NEXT MONTH

Cllr Lenny Walker and Active Crawley Officer (Extreme Sports), Lucy Adams, with children from Manor Green School
The town is set to see an impressive BMX track in Langley Green built by the Easter holidays.
The new £75,000 facility will be one of just seven other official tracks in the whole of the South East, with the closest in Dagenham.
Funding for the track, which will be built adjacent to Cherry Lane Adventure Playground, was awarded to Crawley Borough Council from West Sussex County Council’s Aiming High for Disabled Children programme.
The track, four lanes plus a four metre wide beginner track, will be designed specifically with disabled children and young people and their parents / carers in mind and is set to be totally accessible, fun and challenging for everyone.
Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a fantastic piece of work by Community Services staff, residents and Members, and will be a great addition to the town. It will hopefully attract users from far and wide and increase Crawley’s profile too.
“The most pleasing aspect about this project is that it’s designed with disabled users in mind. I really look forward to its completion.”
Consultation has been undertaken with local riders, students from Manor Green, British Cycling and Wheels for All (an established inclusive cycling brand) with their ideas being fed into the design specification.
Dirtworks BMX have been hired to provide a track layout that supports progression, imagination and most of all innovation, really making a name for cycling in Crawley.
Please Click here to see video of BMX Track

The track will be designed to reduce pedalling by using the pumping action of the rider’s body weight and leg compression to propel themselves around the track, while the outer circuit will see bumps, textured surfaces and cambered / transition corners.
A fleet of specially adapted cycles and BMX bikes will also be available to ensure cycling is accessible to all.
Work will start towards the end of February and the track is set to open in time for the Easter Holidays. Anyone who wants to get involved in involved with setting up a BMX Club should contact Lucy Adams, Active Crawley Officer (Extreme Sports) on 01293 585350.

Pavilion redevelopment set to begin
The long-awaited redevelopment of Maidenbower Pavilion will begin on Monday 7th February.
Morgan Sindall was appointed in December to construct the pavilion, 3G pitch and associated works. The building is due to be completed in August 2011.
The £1 million investment by Crawley Borough Council will include:
• Extending the main hall and provision for social club and bar
• Provision of community café
• Meeting rooms and activity space
• Provision of a brand new 3G pitch.
Councillors were approached in 2007 by residents and community groups who said that existing sports facilities at Maidenbower Playing Fields were underused while there was insufficient provision for children and young people.
This led to a community group being set up working with ward members, led by Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services, to identify the aspirations of the community.
Capital investment was secured, the outdoor play areas were refurbished in 2008 and a wish list of facilities was identified from the community.
The council has continued to work with local interest groups and community representatives to develop and refine the scheme to ensure it reflects local residents’ desires and aspirations. The scheme was presented to the wider community for consultation, the results of which informed the pavilion design brief.
The council will manage most aspects of the facility upon completion and transfer over the management responsibilities within two years of operation.
Any residents who are keen to get involved can contact Tony Bunn, Chairman of the Maidenbower Community Group, on 07710 343111.

Maths lessons move to Town Hall
Pupils gifted in Maths and Literacy from West Green Primary School had a maths lesson with a difference last week when they visited the Town Hall.
Crawley Borough Council hosted seven pupils and headteacher Tom O’Donoghue as part of the school’s maths in business programme.

The children, in years three to six (aged seven to 11), learnt about the council, made decisions about how they would spend its money and checked for counterfeit notes in the cashiers’ area.
Councillor Vanessa Cumper, a governor at West Green Primary School, arranged the visit. She said: “The children enjoyed the visit immensely, especially counting money, even though they were not allowed to keep any samples!

“The headteacher and I would like to give a huge thanks to the staff that gave up a little of their time and put such a lot of thought and effort into the visit to help the children learn more about the workings of the council and how we budget our money.”
The children had a jam-packed itinerary arranged by council staff.

They were very excited to learn that they would be allowed to sit in the Mayor’s chair in the Council Chamber and found out about how councillors make decisions through debate. The children held their own debate about the merits of boys playing football separately to girls. They soon discovered that the Mayor’s role can be quite pressured, keeping an eye on who wants to speak and calling for votes.
After the debate the children seized the opportunity to grill the Leader of the Council, Councillor Bob Lanzer, asking about Council Tax spending and planning issues.

The children were given several tasks in the cashiers’ office; counting bank notes, how to spot a fake and counting and adding up coins. They were then treated to a drink and a snack and had the opportunity to find out how our money is kept securely after it is paid in at the counters.
Staff had also prepared games to help the children look at ways to spread the town’s budget fairly across the council’s services.
Back at school the children held a special assembly so they could pass on their knowledge about the council and counterfeit money to the other children, which will help the whole school learn about maths in a practical way.
Practical experiences outside of the classroom such as this innovative method is a beneficial way for children to learn as it can be more stimulating and easily relates to the children’s lives making a difficult topic easier to learn and enabling a lifelong enjoyment of maths.
