Swimming referral boosts health and wellbeing

Swimming referral boosts health and wellbeing

Almost 200 residents have been referred onto Crawley Borough Council’s swimming referral programme by their GPs in just three months.

The scheme, which will eventually take 1,000 residents, offers swimming at no cost to help combat health problems.

More than 185 people have been referred by their health professionals, got in the K2 Crawley pool and started their swimming programme, with many more to follow.

Many are now halfway through the programme with some already completing the course.

Participants are given blood pressure, weight and lung capacity checks before receiving their voucher books, each containing 20 free swim vouchers.

The initiative, which sits alongside the Weight Off Workshop and Active Life Referral programmes, targets people who would gain significant health benefits from swimming and are not currently swimmers.

The free swims, which must be used within 16 weeks of starting the programme, will encourage participants to get into the habit of going swimming.

Following completion of the swimming programme participants will be assessed to monitor their improvement in health. They will also be asked to complete questionnaires before, during and after completing the programme. Participants must be at least 16 years of age.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “We have a fantastic swimming pool at K2 Crawley and it provides great opportunities for everyone but I believe we could help to improve the health of those who need it most.

“It’s great to see the first people getting the benefits of this scheme and using the pool to increase their health and wellbeing.

“Swimming is the most popular physical activity for adults and the most popular choice of activity for those who wish to start to exercise.

“The programme is also a good example of partnership working between the council, NHS West Sussex, Freedom Leisure, GPs, the Amateur Swimming Association and Crawley Wellbeing.”

It’s a walk in the park!

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Take your first steps to a healthier lifestyle with Crawley Wellbeing’s Walk4Life Miles. They meet every Tuesday at 10.30am in the lower car park (near the railway crossing) and we generally walk in all weathers.

Walk4Life is part of the Change4Life initiative to help people get more active and lead healthier lives.

Walking is a great way to improve the general health of the whole family. It’s a feel-good exercise that’s also good for the environment – and it’s completely free.

TuTuesday the 5th of October The Worshipful the Deputy Mayor of Crawley Councillor Carol Eade officially opened the walk4life mile at Goff’s park with the Goff’s park health walkers.

Crawley has two new marked routes in Goff’s Park and Worth Park. Way-markers have been placed around the one-mile routes.

Walking the MBT way

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Crawley Happy Times were invited down to the fairly new MBT shop in the County Mall to learn why MBT are slowly becoming the market leaders in the anti-shoe department.

Shelley popped down to try the footwear.  Shelley told us “on arrival I found the shop to be very organised and well laid out. The staff were very welcoming and James talked me through how the shoes work and how they can benefit those who wear them. James explained how all their shoes perform in the same way. They can improve balance, increase activity of the limbs in the lower body whilst toning muscles in the calves, thighs, abdomen, and bottom. James was very consious about not giving the wrong advise or information which I felt was very important and vigilant”.

Carol, the manager of MBT Crawley told Shelley “I wear mine all the time and have dropped a dress size.  They are not a footwear designed for losing weight, but it is just a natural reaction for the body to tone and in turn lose weight. Walking seems so much more attractive now it has hidden benefits”.

Shelley found the shoes extremely comfortable and diverse in styles. From a very fashionable boot to a trendy trainer the footwear could be worn in all weathers and occasions. Shelley said “I am actually really excited to see what they can do for me. I would definitely notice if they were toning me which would be wonderful. I will just need to walk more from now on, but that is never a bad thing!”.

Shelley enjoyed her visit to the MBT shop in County Mall, Crawley. Shelley said “to be honest, I had seen the shop and the footwear before but had been under the misconception that they were for people who had back problems or bad posture. But after meeting and talking to the staff I now know they are more for prevention of bad posture while giving your lower body a mini work out, toning areas while you walk, it’s just ingenious really. I was also wrong in thinking they would look ‘strange’ on my feet, whereas they looked just like any other pair of trainers and were very attractive in colour and style”.

Exert from MBT’s website:

MBT (Masai Barefoot Technology) was born in 1996 when we discovered that natural instability has some amazing health benefits. We made this discovery by observing the wonderfully agile Masai people walking barefoot on natural, uneven ground. Seeing these people in action made us realize that the human body is simply not designed to walk or stand on the hard, flat surfaces of modern society. So we set out to develop a new kind of footwear, one that would mimic walking on soft, uneven ground. The results have been dramatic and revolutionary. MBTs are now sold in more than 35 countries around the world and enthusiastic users testify that wearing MBTs noticeably increase their well-being.

MBTs activate and tone your muscles

MBTs are good for your whole body (not just your feet)

MBTs help you burn more calories whether walking or standing

MBTs increase your well-being

When the body is unstable, the body is stronger

When walking in MBTs, the ground is no longer flat and stable, so the body has to use more muscles to compensate and create stability. This activates the whole body, increases back muscle activity, improves posture, tightens buttocks and thighs and even burns more calories. All while reducing stress on the ankle, knee and hip joints. And with extensive scientific documentation to back up these claims, healthcare professionals around the world are now recommending MBT footwear in the treatment of backache, musculoskeletal injuries and other physical pains.

Science under your feet

The MBT Academy is our central R&D facility, providing a forum for our ongoing dialog with international experts and researchers in the fields of clinical medicine, physiotherapy and sports. Here we test, verify and optimize the effects of MBT footwear on the human body.

Today we have more than 40 studies which provide scientific documentation from independent universities and research institutes of the unique physical benefits our footwear delivers.

Watch out, there are fakes about!

There are unfortunately a number of companies offering consumers cheaper, lesser quality fake MBTs that can actually damage rather than help strengthen the body.

We therefore strongly recommend you purchase MBTs only through approved retailers and dealers who are trained to ensure you can enjoy the full benefits of our unique, scientifically-proven footwear.

Please visit their website for further information.

We would like to thank Lauren Holness, Account Executive for Cow PRwho organised our visit and very kindly sent Shelley her own pair of MBT’s (which she has not taken off since receiving!).

An excited Shelley and her new MBT's

Please follow us on twitter (@CHTOnline) or Facebook (Crawley Happy Times) to hear Shelley’s updates and progress with her new MBT’s.

K2 Crawley receives IFI Award

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

K2 Crawley receives IFI Award

K2 Crawley, which is run by leading not-for-profit leisure trust Freedom Leisure, has been awarded a ‘Provisional Level’ Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) Award. The trust has worked closely with Crawley Wellbeing and Crawley Borough Council to increase the inclusion of disabled people, of all ages, at K2 Crawley. The presentation of the IFI Award verifies that the centre facilities, its staff and the equipment available, offer truly inclusive opportunities.

On a national basis, only 8.8%* of disabled people are regularly physically active and Freedom Leisure and its partners are actively working to encourage more local people with disabilities to participate in sport and exercise. In order for the centre to receive the award, Freedom Leisure has ensured that there is equipment in the gym to allow disabled members to enjoy a work out. There are sufficient and accessible parking bays and toilet and changing facilities.. There are further improvements planned between now and the end of the year, including £12,000 worth of new fitness equipment. To enable as many people as possible to be able to participate in exercise the centre offers a range of pricing options..

Having a disability should not be a barrier to keeping fit and being able to enjoy exercise. With easy disabled access, trained staff and the right equipment, Freedom Leisure aims to make using the gym a trouble-free and a fun experience. Freedom Leisure’s friendly and fully trained staff can help to create exercise programmes that will increase physical activity at a level that suits the individual, they are also there to support, motivate and help people to achieve their personal goals. All this helps make the change to a more physically active lifestyle as easy as possible which can reduce the risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and obesity.

Chris Lovelock Centre Manager at K2 Crawley commented, ‘The increased investment in the centre has made a tangible difference to our disabled customers’ experience here at K2 Crawley. It is important to the whole Freedom Leisure team that we provide accessible facilities and a wide variety of activities for all members of the local community. These improvements and those set for the future are great steps forward in providing more fitness activities for all who wish to use K2 Crawley.’

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services at Crawley Borough Council, said: “This is great news for Freedom Leisure, Crawley Wellbeing and the council. We try very hard to make our services accessible to all and K2 Crawley is no exception. The fact that it is the only approved 2012 Paralympic training camp in Sussex proves this.”

Meet the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games hopefuls from West Sussex

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Meet the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games hopefuls from West Sussex

You might not recognise all their names now, but in less than 700 days they could be some of the most high profile in the world, and all have one thing in common – West Sussex.

The county’s most talented sportsmen and women hoping to compete in the London 2012 Games are listed on the West Sussex-Ahead of the Game website.

They describe the dedication needed to get to the top of their sport and their hopes for the London 2012 Games at www.westsussex-aheadofthegame.com

Some of our 2012 hopefuls have competed at previous Games, including Paralympic swimmer Sascha Kindred, who used to live in Crawley, and World Champion swimmer Gemma Spofforth, whose family home is in Slindon; others are training to compete at their first Games in London, including Shoreham-by-Sea born sailor Megan Pascoe and handball player Mark Hawkins.

Mark, who grew up in Horsham, said: “Being West Sussex born and bred I hope the county benefits from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  It’s going to be a great chance to show off the sporting talent we have in West Sussex, as there are many great athletes from the county.”

As well as featuring our 2012 hopefuls, West Sussex-Ahead of the Game is helping to celebrate the county’s Olympians and Paralympians of the past. The Roll of Honour features people from the Summer Games of 1912 in Stockholm, to 2008 in Beijing.

The best known include Steyning’s Sally Gunnell OBE, Daley Thompson CBE, who went to school in Bolney and was a member of Haywards Heath Harriers, and Duncan Goodhew MBE, who grew up in Yapton.

Also featured are the achievements of many more such as Horsham born John Sheffield at the 1936 Berlin Games, and Denise St Aubyn Hubbard, who lives near Chichester, at the London Games in 1948.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart, said: “This project has captured the imagination of many people.  We asked for help in collating the information, and many got in contact to tell us stories of people they knew with a strong West Sussex connection, who’ve either competed in the Games or have the potential to do so.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this important project possible. We will be doing whatever we can to support our 2012 hopefuls in the next two years.”

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Turn over a new leaf this autumn at K2 Crawley with a new fitness class timetable.

‘Back to School’ means more new fitness classes at K2 Crawley this autumn. The new term is an ideal time to shake up your routine and have fun trying something new. K2 Crawley, run by the leading not-for-profit leisure trust Freedom Leisure, is investing in a new autumn timetable of activities starting from 30th August.

For junior members, aged between 11-18 years old, the already popular Monday evening Junior Spin class is being complemented by a new energetic Junior Circuit Class on Wednesday evenings. Both classes are a great way to boost energy, stay fit and also relieve some of those term time stresses.

Brand new to K2 Crawley on Sundays and Fridays is Zumba. This latest fitness craze, is a hip swivelling combination of African, Caribbean and Latin dance moves and aerobics. It is fun, easy to do and helps to tone and sculpt the body through fast and slow routines. No dancing experience is needed, just lots of energy!

Whether training for a charity run next year or just running for the pure enjoyment, K2 Crawley has a Beginners Run Club which will take place every Tuesday evening at 5:30pm on the athletics track until 31 October.

Now there is a great excuse to get out of the office at lunchtime. Due to customer demand, you can now take a Body Balance class on Friday lunchtimes. This class is incorporates Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi and is a fantastic way to start the weekend.

The weekend went with a bang and CHT finger puppet was sought after, therefore most of our pictures were with CHT finger puppet! We may have to intergrate both pages now, DOH! We think this had something to do with Steve McFadden taking a shine to our CHT finger puppet. This weekend CHT finger puppet visited the Apple Tree for Les Etchells 50th Birthday bash, then went on a little holiday to Horley for about an hour to see some friends there. After having a laugh with the girls CHT finger puppet came back from their mini holiday back to Crawley to visit the Punch Bowl where their fans were waiting for them! All that attention didn’t go to their head though. After a few drinks with friends it was off to Bar Med to see ‘The Outfit’ play. They were fantastic! We filmed them so you can put a date in your diary for when they come around again :-) Also took a little picture of Shelley’s Nan at bingo! Vera is 88!

The Supporters Trust constitution clearly states that the role of the Trust is to “assist the club in promoting support for CTFC and to encourage new support, especially of young people and families and strengthen the bonds between the club and the local community”.  The Junior Reds scheme fits perfectly with that statement as it is entirely designed to encourage the attendance of families. The Club and the Trust hope that this scheme will be a first step towards building an ever strengthening relationship between both organisations, and towards placing our great football club firmly at the centre of the community it serves.

Is it a Rumba, no it’s Zumba!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Crawley Happy Times have been invited to the launch of the new Zumba dance class, so decided to take a look at what we were letting ourselves in for.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is a latin inspired dance fitness class.

The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.

The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba class.

In the past years, the Zumba program has become nothing short of a revolution, spreading like wildfire, and positioning itself as the single most influential movement in the industry of fitness.

As of July 2009, the Zumba program is being taught at over 50,000 locations in 75 countries, has sold millions of DVDs, and has changed the lives of Zumba fanatics worldwide with an astonishing six million participants taking Zumba classes every week.

Participants pump there legs, windmill there arms, gyrate their hips, clap their hands, dip, slide and spin – all to a frenzied beat.

Who will be teaching us?

Joanne Cooper and Sarah Cubitt are old friends who share the passion for dance and fitness. Sarah teaches Body Pump, Body Jam with qualifications in lots of other areas (aerobics, aqua etc). Sarah works as a primary school teacher in Horley during the day. Sarah has a two children. Her daughter attends classes and wishes to gain her Zumba qualification like her mum. Joanne also works during the day and looks after two children but feels running the Zumba classes fits nicely around her lifestyle. Joanne and Sarah have never taught together but felt this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

What should we wear?

Wear your trainers and bring plenty of water. You will need it to drink, but more importantly to throw over your feet when they are set on fire!

Where and when are the classes being held?

The launch is at Maidenbower Community Centre on Tuesday 2nd March 7.45pm ’till 8:30pm and is FREE to all who attend. The usual cost is £5.00 per session. The classes will run on a weekly basis.

Bring some friends and join the party!

Come for a fab cardio workout to infectious music!

Be apart of the biggest fitness craze!

You will find the enthusiasm contagious the moves simple and fun and become addicted to Zumba as we both are!

This is an adult class designed for EVERYONE! Participants of any fitness level, any background can start to Zumba straight away!

Fitness is just a donation away

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Sussex Bootcamps are making it a priority to help those less fortunate than them over the Xmas period. And this is how they are doing it.

On Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th and Friday 18th December, Sussex Bootcamps are offering free sessions to their fitness classes for anyone who is interested. The only requirement is to bring some food to be donated to Open House in Three Bridges.

We spoke to Ben, senior instructor at Sussex Bootcamps who told us “We wanted to give something back to the community for all the support they have given us over the last year so we decided to do three free sessions which would help others in return. All you need to do is just bring some food and you can workout at Sussex’s leading fitness Bootcamp on December 14th, 16th And 18th for free.  We are calling it “Turkey-Busting Workouts” because the session will burn off those pre Christmas calories. All food donations are going to Crawley Open House, Emmaus Homeless Charity, Brighton and Burgess Hill District Lions Club. We’re planning on making this an annual tradition here, as Christmas is such a wonderful family and friends occasion, and a time to show our appreciation for all we have, especially our health”.

Sussex Bootcamps Turkey-Busting Workouts are open to all Sussex residents and their family and friends on Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th ,and Friday 18th December in : -

  • Haywards Heath (6.15am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 6.15pm and 7.15pm
  • Horsham (6.15am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 6.15pm and 7.15pm)
  • Crawley (6.15pm and 7.15pm)

All Camps are 45 minutes long and you can attend every session that week, two sessions or just the one. We understand that this time of year is probably your busiest so it’s up to you how many session you want to do.

The worshipful the Mayor Brenda Burgess is going to make a guest appearance at the session on Monday 14th December at Hazelwick School on the 6.15pm session, joining in on the training. Open House is the Mayor’s chosen charity so was happy to join in for this great cause. Ben said “we are really looking forward to seeing Mayor Brenda Burgess on Monday. We feel it is a great cause and really appreciate the Mayor’s support and participation”.

Shelley from Crawley Happy Times will also be attending the three free sessions, so do register your place soon!

Please visit here to register your interest and save your place. Spaces are restricted so please register as soon as you can.

It’s a blast

Ben told us “As you can see, everyone has a blast at Sussex Bootcamps regardless of age and fitness level.  And we’ll make sure you do too.  There’s no need to be anxious about coming to camp if you’re a little out of shape, we’re not going to make you do anything crazy – that would just defeat the purpose.

All we want you to do is come out and have fun, burn off some pre Christmas calories, and feel great while helping those who could use some help this Christams (just one can of food goes a long way)”.

Because NOTHING makes you feel better, more alive and more engaged (so you can really enjoy your Christams) than getting your body moving and your heart pumping…and helping those less fortunate at the same time.

Here is some footage of previous classes, which are a lot of fun as well as being good for your health.

A very Merry Christmas from all at Sussex Bootcamps :-)
