It all kicked off on Sunday (April 3), for Sussex Police as they were faced with a group of youths in Crawley.
Although this isn’t what you think – the police were playing a football match against young people from the Escape Youth Project in Broadfield.
The event was organised by the West Sussex County Council run Escape Youth Project – a drop-in service, which host youth facilities for 11 to 19 year olds on a Sunday at Broadfield’s youth centre – and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Ashleigh Hanlon.
The football event was also supported by West Sussex County Council Youth Service, Sussex Police, Freedom Leisure, Crawley Borough Council, Rare Range Coaching, who helped with coaching on the day, and local resident group Inspire Broadfield, who provided refreshments on the day.
Around 150 people turned up on Mother’s Day at Crawley’s K2 Leisure Centre to watch the Under 19s beat the force 1-0 in the last 25 seconds of the game, when Levi Austin headed the ball to Terry Sandwell who scored the goal.
Crawley Town FC player Richard Brodie awarded trophies and congratulated players after the match.
Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “This event is a great example of communities working together to help develop young people’s relationships with each other and encourage them to be active.
“Well done to all involved and everyone who went along to support the teams.
The Hawth has two fantastic musical performances in the Studio in May offering the finest of folk and the most flamboyant of flamenco.
Kieran Goss has long been hailed as one of Ireland’s leading performers and songwriters and on Wednesday 18 May at 8.45pm he will be showing why when he performs his Live and Solo show at the Crawley Theatre.
In addition to being a double platinum selling recording artist, Kieran Goss’s songs have been recorded by some of Ireland’s top recording artists, including Mary Black, Christy Moore and Frances Black, bringing his songs to a worldwide audience and winning him fans across the globe.
While his songwriting has made him a star in his native Ireland, his live performances have made him a legend. Live on stage is where Kieran Goss truly shines. The Irish Times recently wrote of Kieran’s run of sold out shows at the Grand Opera House, Belfast: “The sense of fun is tremendous, the playing first rate and thesongs sheer quality. The encores were genuine, but only because the man is too”.

Ahead of the game with health and wellbeing agenda
West Sussex will be served by a new Health and Wellbeing Board a year early, after being selected as an ‘early implementer’ by the Department for Health.
West Sussex County Council has been working with local partners on proposals in recent months and has now announced the formal establishment of a Board which will meet for the first time in May.
The Boards form part of the Government’s reforms of the NHS and have to be in place everywhere by April 2012.
West Sussex has a strong history of partnership working between the County Council and health organisations, and is setting up a shadow Board a year early.
County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith explained: “We are well placed in West Sussex to meet the proposed health changes and are working closely with our partners.
“Health and wellbeing is a priority for the County Council, and we are at the forefront of local authorities, leading the way on public health. As such, we have been selected as an ‘early implementer’ by the Department of Health.”
Over the next year the shadow Board will help shape the future of the health service in West Sussex as the changes are rolled out nationally, and will help influence key decisions about the future of health provision.
Following the shadow year, the work of the Board will be reviewed and then formally established in April 2012.
Louise added: “Local authorities and the NHS have a strong history of working together in West Sussex. We already jointly commission many of our services together. We have introduced personal budgets for social care and health, and work with districts and boroughs on Health and Wellbeing partnerships across the county.
“Establishing the Board will allow us to move further and faster on the joint working between health, social care and public health for the benefit of residents.”
Early roles for the Board will include giving feedback on NHS West Sussex’s Operating Plan for 2011/12, reviewing plans for jointly commissioned services (mental health, learning disability, drugs and alcohol, children’s services and continuing care) and looking at priorities for West Sussex, and a review of the plans for the £8.9 million of social care funding which has been allocated to NHS West Sussex as part of the Government spending review.
Members of the Board will include representatives from the County Council, District and Borough Councils, voluntary sector, the new GP consortia and health officials.
Crawley MP Welcomes Help For The Poorest Local Children Through The Pupil Premium
Henry Smith has welcomed new figures which show that disadvantaged children in Crawley are set to receive £683,000 this year under the Coalition Government’s new ‘pupil premium’.
The pupil premium is a new policy promised by the Conservatives before the general election last year. It is an extra lump sum of cash which follows every disadvantaged child and is received by schools, allowing them to provide additional support such as one-to-one tuition and extra pastoral care.
The Government has announced that in the year from April 2011, the pupil premium will be worth £430 for every pupil on Free School Meals, £430 for every looked-after child, and £200 for every child who has a parent in the armed services. This means that in Crawley this year 1,590 children overall will benefit from the £683,000 funding.
Henry Smith said:
“This is fantastic news for young people in Crawley. The gap between the academic performance of children from deprived backgrounds and their peers is far too big and has been ignored for too long.
“The pupil premium will tackle this disparity head on, providing targeted funding for those who need it most. This could mean extra one-to-one tuition or more pastoral support.
“The Government didn’t create these problems but, even in these tough times, it is delivering a massive boost to the education of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children.”
First aiders under starters’ orders for the big race
Sussex St John Ambulance is now putting the finishing touches to a massive first aid operation designed to ensure ‘gold standard’ medical cover for the Brighton Marathon.
The nation’s leading first aid charity will be providing more than 300 staff and volunteers for this year’s event on 10th April.
They will include first aiders, doctors, nurses and paramedics who will man 18 treatment centres, 17 ambulances and two advanced care centres with high-tech life support facilities similar to those of a military field hospital.
Sussex St John Ambulance Operations Manager Dan May said: ‘It’s our biggest first aid challenge to date which has taken many months of planning. I have every confidence that on the day we’ll have the best possible team and facilities in place to provide the highest level of medical care.
‘We’re very proud to have been chosen as the lead medical provider for this prestigious event for the second year running. As always, our mission is to ensure no one suffers unnecessarily because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.’
During last year’s event the Sussex St John Ambulance team treated 1,536 casualties and transferred nine runners to hospital.
This year the team is once again trained and ready to deal with the full range of medical conditions associated with endurance events – from muscle cramps and stress fractures through to exercise induced collapses and cardiac arrests.
There will be four St John Ambulance cycle response teams and another four Forward Incident Teams on foot, all capable of reaching casualties through the dense crowds faster than a land ambulance. Their first aid kits will include medical gases and automated external defibrillators.
Race Director Tim Hutchings said: ‘We’re delighted to have St John Ambulance on board for our second marathon and we know that we can entrust them with the health of our runners and spectators.
‘We’ve been working closely with them in recent months to ensure this is an event which can be enjoyed by thousands of people in a safe and fun environment and their contribution to making that happen on the day will be invaluable.’
St John Ambulance members give up their free time to provide first aid cover for the event, relieving the strain on the NHS. Because of its extensive first aid and medical facilities throughout the race route, the charity is able to treat many casualties at the scene who would otherwise be taken to hospital.
The charity is not part of the NHS and also receives no core government funding so relies on donations and fundraising to continue its vital work in local communities. For information on making a donation or becoming a volunteer please call 01273 371 500 or visit www.sja.org.uk/sussex.
Public concern leads to action taken to slow traffic down in Ifield
ACTION has been taken in Hyde Drive, Ifield, following concerns about traffic speed and pedestrian safety expressed by residents at the January meeting of West Crawley County Local Committee.
A report to the Committee says:
One: Sussex Police has confirmed that enforcement is underway and it recently issued six tickets to vehicles exceeding 40 mph.
Two: A pedestrian and vehicle count is to be undertaken to establish if the area by the new playground is suitable for a controlled crossing and to establish its priority on West Sussex County Council’s list of potential crossing locations.
Three: A speed survey was undertaken between March 7th and 14th and the results are now being analysed.
Four: School coach companies have been contacted about the relocation of the school bus pick up and drop off point.
Two future steps will include the local Police Community Support Officer assessing whether there is sufficient concern and interest from local residents to form a community speed watch group.
The local members for the area, County Councillor Chris Oxlade, and Crawley Borough Councillors Ali Burke and John Denman, along with a School Travel Advisor, will be meeting with the Headteacher at Mill School to investigate the possibility of the pupils designing road safety posters.
These posters would be displayed on selected lamp posts in Hyde Drive on a temporary basis for up to six weeks, as has been done in other areas of the county.
The report will be discussed at the Committee’s next meeting, which is being held on Thursday April 7th in the Longley Exhibition Room, Crawley Library, starting at 7pm.
Alan Quirk, Committee Chairman, said: “This is an opportunity for people to express their views on the report and the steps being taken to address concerns.”

Crawley Borough Council is giving away celebration packs for St George’s Day and Royal Wedding street parties.

“We want to support these people by giving them party kits to help bring neighbours and communities together at these celebrations and to ensure they go with a bang.”

Crawley MP Congratulates Local Firm On Successful £100m Deal For London 2012 Security Services
The Manor Royal based G4S has won a deal to recruit, train and manage over 10,000 security staff for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Henry Smith said:
“This £100 million contract is one in a series of successful business deals won across Crawley which help place local business at the heart of the upcoming 2012 Games.
“Well done to the G4S team that worked so hard to put together and sell a winning bid which will undoubtedly create yet more jobs locally and assist other businesses. The bid was won against the backdrop of tough competition and it is a true testament to G4S that they have been appointed for this essential role.
“I am pleased to see the extent to which Crawley is benefiting from the London Games and will continue to try and build on this platform further still.”
On Sunday 27th March 2011 the sun shone and the people of Crawley came in their hundreds to help raise money for ‘Milly’s Journey’.
Now you may think this is done all the time….but, not organised, promoted, and pulled off in just two weeks! This is not the only event being held to raise funds for Milly. Milly is a five year old who needs proton treatment for a brain tumor. This treatment can only be given in the USA. Today we met Milly for the first time and her courage and happy attitude was touching. Milly was a joy to meet. Milly’s parents Paul and Emma were hands on during the day and never seemed to slow down. This family are a credit to our town. The community showed that by turning up in their hundreds. We believe the total was 946!
It really was a brilliant event with children having fun and adults socialising while enjoying the weather. We will get a list of all the helpers on the day and will let you know. But the real thank you goes to those caring people who came and donated by having a tea or coffee, or buying a plant, guessing the number of sweets, or having one of those yummy cakes
More to come……
We put together some pictures of the day and a video of interviews by Shelley.

The Kung Fu School in Spindle Way in Crawley leads the way in martial arts entertainment as well as being one of the best schools in the area.
Who are they?
The Kung Fu School is without a doubt Crawley’s premier martial arts facility and arguably one of the best in the UK. Fully equipped with modern and traditional training equipment, wooden dummies and wallbags, it has two training areas with solid wooden floors and mirrored walls. There is no better place to start martial arts training.
They are the longest established Wing Chun Club in Crawley with their first class opening in 1992. After many years in local halls and community centres, the appropriately titled ‘Kung Fu School’ was opened on Spindle Way in 2005. So when it comes to Kung Fu, they are experts in our field.
Having studied under some of the worlds most renowned (and sometimes controversial) Wing Chun masters, the Kung Fu School never rests on it laurels and is constantly pushing forward to develop its curriculum and making sure students have some of the best tuition available. <source>
Sifu Paul Hawkes invited Crawley Happy Times to their recent Chinese Day. The school is always well attended on such events, as it was last year when the ex-Mayor Brenda Burgess experienced the entertainment for herself. You can read this article here.
This years was no exception. Sifu Paul and his team always make the events interesting and educational. We would like to thank the whole team for the invite and wish them all the success for the future.
Three Bridges U9′s Football Club are on the hunt for a new goal keeper.
On Saturday 19th March Crawley Happy Times sent Shelley down to Furnace Green Playing Fields to meet Paul Williams, Assistant Manager who gave us more information.
You can visit the website for further details on the teams here.
Creasys Drive staff are set to help raise much-needed funds for Crawley youngster, Milly Vaughan, who is set to travel to America for lifesaving cancer treatment.
Milly Vaughan with her granddad, Tilgate Park Manager, Kevin Tidy
The Creasys Drive Adventure Playground funday kicks off at 11am on Sunday (March 27) and families can join in a host of activities until 3pm for a suggested donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child.
A call on Facebook from milly’s family and support from Creasys Drive staff has seen people from across the town donate their time, services and prizes for the fab funday.
The event, at the Broadfield based adventure playground, will raise cash for five-year-old Milly’s trip to Florida where she will have proton therapy for a brain tumour.
The tumour was discovered when Milly was just one, following ill health since birth. Over the last four years she has undergone two courses of chemotherapy as surgery is not possible and doctors have now decided the best course of action is proton therapy.
There’s something for the whole family to enjoy including a bouncy castle, raffle, tombola, face painting, pampering sessions, welly throwing, arts and crafts, tug of war, penalty football plus drinks and snacks.
Milly, who’s grandfather Kevin Tidy manages Tilgate Park for Crawley Council, will have her flight and accommodation paid for by the NHS, as will her parents, Emma and Paul.
But, the three month trip will cost a lot in living expenses and there’s still bills to be paid back home; the funday fundraiser will go some way to helping the family cover expenses for the vital trip.
For more information about the funday call 01293 561847 and to find out more about Milly and her condition log on to www.millys-journey.co.uk
The council is urging Crawley people to do their bit for the planet this week and switch off for Earth Hour.
Crawley Borough Council already has a policy to switch off lights in its buildings across town and now it’s asking residents to switch off for an hour between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday (March 26).
Councillor Keith Blake, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “We’ve been switching off the lights in all our buildings every night since 2003. Crawley Council is working hard to make sure it considers the environment in all its activities.
“Last year we reduced our carbon emissions by five per cent, this year we’re aiming for 10 per cent with a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.
“We’ve commissioned some highly eco-friendly buildings recently, like the new Bewbush Centre, the new homes currently being built in Rushetts Place, Langley Green, and the Retrofit project which is reducing carbon emissions from four existing council properties by 80 per cent.
“We’re now looking at making existing buildings ever more efficient while making greater use of renewable energy such as Solar PV”
Earth hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.
2010 saw the biggest Earth Hour yet with 128 countries and territories joining the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific and Europe to Africa and the Americas switched off.
This year WWF, the organisation behind Earth Hour, want people to go beyond the hour and think about what else they can do to make a difference.
