A triple donation by County Mall

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

The Crawley County Mall has given away £6,000 between three local charities: Home Start, Rockinghorse and Chestnut’s Challenge.

This was achieved when the local people voted for their favourite of the three charities at the interactive Christmas tree within the centre, or by voting via the County Mall’s website before Christmas.

The £6,000 funds were then split between the charities who receives £3k, £2k and £1k depending on the number of votes they received.

The three charities are:

Home-Start

Home-Start is a charity consisting of community volunteers supporting local families coping with bereavement, ill health, financial difficulties, depression, disability and isolation.

They offer friendly, practical support in the home and through family groups.

Home Start is also the chosen charity of Mayor Lee Burke while he is in office.

Rockinghorse

An independent local charity, which aims to make life better for sick and disabled children across Sussex. Rockinghorse has been making life better for sick children for 43 years, by supporting children’s hospitals respite centres across the county.

Chestnut Tree House

For every life-limited local child that Chestnut Tree House is caring for, there is another child somewhere in Sussex that they are not yet caring for due to lack of funding. Please help them meet the challenge of reaching every one of them. Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex, providing practical and emotional support, expert advice and dedicated care for local families with children affected by cancer, muscular dystrophy and other life-limiting illnesses.

We are very proud to announce in first place came Rocking Horse, second was Chestnut Tree House then Home Start.

New play area gets a Royal seal of approval

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

When Arundale School, a small independent school in Pulborough, was forced to close due to a falling roll, it was the beginning of a windfall for Gossops Green Community Primary School.  In line with Arundale’s charitable status, and unable to find a buyer, they donated their new outdoor play equipment to Gossops Green Community Primary, where the School Council had been asking for large, fixed play apparatus for some time, but the school premises budget has been swallowed up with mainitaining 50 year old buildings, leaving very little for resources that the pupils and staff can see.

This left the challenge of finding a way to remove the equipment from its Pulborough site, before the site was handed over to its new owners in July, and relocating it in Gossops Green.  The Apollo Group, which is refurbishing bathrooms and kitchens in local council properties, came to the rescue and Divisional Manager, Mr James Dickens, agreed that the company would relocate the equipment as a community project, overseen by Mr Tim Skiggs, Apollo Project Manager  and Mr Adrian Nind, Apollo Site Manager, and assisted by sub-contractors, Pilon Construction.

Gossops Green pupils now have a height chart, shop and chime bars in the Reception outdoor classroom and a large play area beside the upper playground.  In recognition of the level of voluntary community contributions which have enabled the project to be successful, the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, and the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Lee Burke attended the formal opening ceremony on Monday 20th September, along with Mrs Kay Lovejoy, Headmistress of Arundale School and Mrs Claire Gilks, Arundale’s Business Manager and the key people from Apollo Construction.  ‘My favourite bit is the monkey bars’, said one excited pupil.   ‘We are overwhelmed with the generosity of the support that both Arundale and the Apollo Group have provided to make our pupils’ dreams come true’, said Dawn Martin, Headteacher of Gossops Green.  ‘Thank you to everyone who has made this possible – happy playtimes are a feature of our school culture, with children acting as Play Managers and Play Leaders.  The new equipment will enable us to add another dimension to what we are able to offer’.

Medical equipment company supports hospice

Friday, November 13th, 2009

A Crawley-based company that supplies medical equipment to hospitals and clinics throughout the world has raised over £11,000 in aid of a local charity.

Varian Medical Systems is a worldwide manufacturer of integrated cancer care systems.  The company – which employs over 200 people at its Crawley manufacturing, engineering, sales and service centre – chose St Catherine’s Hospice as its charity of the year in September 2008.  In the 12 months since then, the staff at Varian have supported the hospice through a variety of activities, including:

• blue bag donations to St Catherine’s charity shops, which raised nearly £1,000
• participation in the Flora London Marathon by Varian employee, Michelle Cook, whose sponsorship totalled over £1,800
• a summer ball which raised over £1,000
• a Christmas raffle which collected over £700
• a bike ride which raised over £500

St Catherine’s provides specialised end of life care and support for local patients and their families, friends and carers in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey.

Matthew Cornish, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We were delighted when Varian chose us as their charity of the year.  The ongoing commitment and enthusiasm of their staff has been really impressive, and greatly appreciated by everyone at St Catherine’s. We hope their example may encourage other businesses to support us in this way.”

Rosemary Myles, Charities Team Leader at Varian, said: “When you are asking people within your company to support a charity throughout the year, it is hard to go back to them again and again asking for support for different fundraising initiatives, but at Varian we do, and the great thing is that there always seem to be enough people willing to give their time and money.

“St Catherine’s was nominated as our charity of the year by one of our employees and it has certainly proved to be a popular choice. So many people know of someone who has benefited from the wonderful care provided by the hospice, and I am sure that provided the motivation needed to enable us not only to achieve our fundraising target of £10,000, but to exceed it!”

Community Book Pledge

Claire Mowl-Seegobin is an independent Usborne representative who is making it her mission to assist children of all ages to improve their reading and writing.

Claire is currently heading a project on behalf of Gossops Green Primary School in association with Usborne. Usborne are a worldwide publishing company who supply books for home, schools and libraries Usborne will donate 60% of the total sales over £500 in extra books to Gossops Green Primary School. In real terms this would mean if every parent with a child at the school, donated £1.50, this would give an estimated total of £723. Usbornes would then donate and extra £433 in books making a total of £1156 for the school. All this from a simple £1.50 donation, astonishing!

Claire is going one better than this by actually donating 15% of her own earnings to any individual who wishes to purchase additional books for a child personally. All they need do is email Claire and inform her the value of their order.

Companies or individuals can either donate a sum or purchase books on Gossops Green Primary Shcool’s behalf to which Usborne will donate a percentage to the school for more books.

Claire told us this would be easily achievable for most schools in our area if companies were to get involved and make a donation of some kind. Do you think your school could benefit from such a project?

An average book from Usbornes costs just £5.99.  The books are all extremely good value for money and very educational. Children respond to the books extraordinarily well because of their irresistible content – humour, colour, surprise and originality.

If you would like your school to get involved and benefit from Claire’s and Usborne’s generosity, then please contact Claire directly via email claire.usbornebooks@googlemail.com or visit the website here.

Claire would also like to announce the FOGGS Xmas shopping night at Gossops Green Primary School is on Thursday 8th October from 19:00 till 21:00 (adults only). Entry is free.
If anyone would like to have a stand at this event the cost is £10 and a donation to the raffle. Please contact Crawley Happy Times on 01293 572182.
