COMPARE WEST SUSSEX CARE PROVIDERS ONLINE

A checklist of benefits and payments to which people are entitled to in order to fund their care in a care home is now available in the latest online version of the West Sussex Care Guide.

As well as the benefits and payments checklist, the 2011/12-care guide lists domiciliary care services and care homes in West Sussex registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It also includes a raft of information on: day care and community care services; extra care housing schemes; and support for carers.

The guide is jointly produced by West Sussex County Council and the West Sussex Forum, which is the largest representative body of independent care providers in the county.

This year’s care guide together with the benefits and payments checklist is available on-linonlinee West Sussex County Council’s website at www.westsussex.gov.uk in PDF formats. It is also accessible via the Caringinfo website www.caringinfo.com which has links to providers’ most recent CQC inspection reports. The Caringinfo website also shows the current vacancies in care and nursing homes.

County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Graham Tyler said: “The interactive website is an extremely useful way of comparing care providers in West Sussex.

“For most people funding the cost of their care home fees represents the second largest purchase of their lifetime. Yet it is believed a significant number of people are not receiving the benefits and other payments to which they are entitled. These could help them towards affording the fees of their chosen care home.

“This is why we have included the benefits and payments checklist to make sure people know what they maybe entitled to if they have total assets in excess of £23,250.”

ED BYRNE SYNDICATED INTERVIEW – JANUARY 2011

By JAMES RAMPTON

For nearly two decades now, the comedian Ed Byrne has been pleasing crowds up and down the country. So it is quite appropriate that his new show should be entitled, “Crowd Pleaser.” He will be touring the country and playing to your crowd very soon – so prepare to be pleased!

Ed is a coruscating comedian. A stand-up who always strikes up a terrific rapport with his audiences, he is a magnetic presence on stage. Whether discussing the difficulties of being a nerd or owning a cat, he is one of the finest – and funniest – comics currently at work in this country.

That’s not just my opinion. The critics have been lining up to lavish praise on a comic at the very top of his game. The Evening Standard raves that, “Ed Byrne is a class apart.” The Scotsman declares that, “It is rare for a comic to merit the word, ‘masterful’, but in this case it is no overstatement.” The Guardian enthuses that, “His wit won deafening cheers and feet stomping,” while The Observer, er, observes that Ed is, “At the height of his powers. It’s no wonder this is selling out nightly.” Phew!

Ed and I meet for a cup of tea in a central London cafe in the snowy run-up to the tour. You can take my word for it – he is just as compelling and comical off-stage. Possessed of an effortless natural wit, the lovable, shaggy-haired stand-up jokes for instance that, “I was going to be talking to the British Humanist Society this afternoon about being good without God, but they’ve had to cancel because of the snow. It’s hard not to think that there are forces at work here …”

The comic says that he just can’t wait to hit the road with “Crowd Pleaser”. “You get this unrivalled buzz from playing live,” beams Ed, who had made a huge splash as a regular guest on TV panel games such as Mock the Week and Have I Got News for You. “When you’re on stage, you keep finding new lines. You keep getting better and improving, which is, of course, the same thing!”

The comic, who was nominated for the coveted Perrier Award at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival, expands on the theme. “There is this brilliant speech in the film Mr Saturday Night, which Billy Crystal’s character gives about what stand-up is. He says, ‘When it’s good, when it’s cookin’, you got ‘em, they’re yours. You can take ‘em anywhere you want, you’re powerful. You prowl the stage like a panther. It feels so good; the laughs go right into your blood. You can be a schmuck in the afternoon, but you’re the king of the night. And every woman wants to f*** you, and every man wants to know you.’ I don’t entirely go along with that last bit. If every woman wants to f*** you, then every man wants to punch you!”

So what can Ed’s myriad fans expect from “Crowd Pleaser”? The comedian discloses that he will be talking in this show about the recent arrival of his first child, a gorgeous baby boy, and seeing the funny side of his wife’s pregnancy. “I couldn’t wait to be a father,” deadpans the Irish comic, who has released two very successful live DVDS, “Pedantic and Whimsical” and “Different Class”. “I was desperate to get my wife back! The first three months of her pregnancy were like living with an alcoholic – ‘I feel sick, I need a wee, get out of my way!’

“She was also afflicted with pregnancy brain. She couldn’t remember the name for anything. It was funny when she met her father who has his own ‘senior moments’. Neither of them could remember the name for the hand of a clock. My mother-in-law and I bonded over the fact that we were shackled to a pair of idiots!”

Able brilliantly to mine his own life for laughs, Ed will also be discussing “coming out” as a nerd in “Crowd Pleaser.” “Judd Apatow movies and the popularity of Simon Pegg have made being a nerd far cooler,” reflects the comic, who will be supported on this tour by fellow Irish funny man Karl Spain.

“So now I’m enjoying letting my inner nerd come out to play a bit more. I’ll be happy to drop a few nerdy references into the show. Did you know, for example, that an anagram of Ed Byrne is ‘Be Nerdy’? That in itself doesn’t prove that I’m a nerd, but the fact that I worked it out does!”

In “Crowd Pleaser”, Ed will also be performing a typically hilarious routine about owning a cat. “We treat pets better than we do humans,” smiles the comic, who made a memorable appearance of BBC1’s Celebrity Mastermind. “We found this cat by the bins and fed it, and it ended up living with us.

“You’d never do that with a human being. If you saw a tramp, you wouldn’t say to him, ‘Come and live in our house. In exchange for food and lodging, just show us your arse occasionally! I’ve become a cat man without being bitten by a radioactive cat. There – that’s a real nerd’s joke for you!”

During the course of “Crowd Pleaser,” Ed will also be addressing such subjects as children wearing age-inappropriate clothing and how disappointing it can be to meet your heroes. In addition, he tackles the thorny topic of religion. But, in a characteristically imaginative move, he reveals, “I’m not going after the religious – I’m going after agnostics. They’re like people who smoke occasionally – make your minds up! It’s very easy to take the mick out of religion; attacking agnostics seems like more of a challenge!”

Finally, does Ed concur with Mr Saturday Night’s description of the stand-up as “The king of the night”? Absolutely. “There are moments where I feel the only time I’m completely at ease is on stage telling jokes,” affirms the comedian, who stormed it on BBC1’s Live at the Apollo. “It’s the only time when I feel I know what I’m doing and am in control of everything. Think of the way I put down hecklers on stage – I’d never talk to anyone like that in real life!

“I imagine it’s the same if you’re a champion skier bombing down the mountain at 100 miles an hour – everything else seems irrelevant. The comedian Adam Bloom calls it, ‘Life Fright’. That means you’re happy on stage, but everything else feels intimidating. That’s absolutely right. Live comedy feeds your soul.

“I just love doing stand-up.”

And we just love watching him do it!

Crawley in Motion Flash Mob

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

On Friday 22nd July in the town centre of Crawley we were treated to a demonstration by the Crawley In Motion team.

Fired up by every-day adult non-dancers, with choreography by Shaun Angel, an enthusiastic camera man and editor Ben Murray and a great bunch of local young people, the Flash Mob demonstrated the essence of ‘Crawley in Motion’ – to mix art with sport, to inspire, volunteer, get involved and enhance activities planned, as we head towards the Olympic year, 2012!

Animating an open space, with dancers and non dancers alike, the intention was to film the event to promote events over the coming year, launching this year’s Open Weekend.  Promoted through a Flash Mob website, word of mouth and email, group rehearsals took place at the Civic Hall, The Hawth Studio, HBG Ifield gym and K2 Crawley with practice video clips on YouTube to learn at home.

The group included non-dancers of all ages, from local authority, Freedom Leisure at K2 Crawley, HBG Fitness, Ginger Moo, local musicians and inspirational input from independent parkour enthusiasts and professional dancers from both Shaun Angel and Andy Moore’s dance troops.

Participants gathered from 4pm, shopped, walked and talked, drank a coffee… The Hawth technical team wheeled a mobile sound system to the bandstand at 4.20pm and on hearing the music, Drew Ratcliff and Jordan Nesbitt crossed the square with well rehearsed breath-taking gymnastic moves which signalled the group to join in.  The impressive routine ended with everyone dispersing from the square to the sounds of cheers from spectators.

Everyone who took part volunteered their time.  Shaun Angel commented “I was really pleased to be asked to help. My students loved being part of an exciting project like this – and I’m  making links with other local dance troops to grow the project with the Crawley in Motion team!”

Video footage and photos will be shown on Go! Crawley’s facebook page promoting activities  for young people – www.facebook.com/gocrawley and on CBC website promoting  Crawley in Motion.

‘Crawley in Motion’ is led by Crawley Borough Council comprising committee members from sports, arts and community and business departments, Freedom Leisure at K2 Crawley, HBG Fitness, Crawley Schools Partnership, CVS. The committee aim is to ensure that Crawley residents are directly involved in celebration and activity surrounding London 2012 – and to encourage everyone to get involved!

Aspire are inspirational

Monday, July 25th, 2011

On Thursday 21st July we sent Shelley along to see the first specially adapted apartment designed to assist spinal injury patients on leaving hospital.

The newly furbished apartment is based in Barley House, Barley Close, Southgate. It is situated in the new flats by The Guinness Trust Partnership. Aspire are a charity who help spinal injury patients adapt into the world of being a wheelchair user.

We spoke to Krupesh Hirani, Policy & Research Officer for Aspire National Training Centre who told us “Aspire are a charity who help people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury. Every eight hours a person in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. The housing programme is one of our main programmes. What we look at is housing people after their injury. The most common cause of a spinal injury is a road traffic accident so they will not have been a wheelchair user previously. They could live in a first floor flat. what that means is someone could be discharged into a setting which we think is not positive for their rehabilitation. Or they might have to be discharged to a care home or could be kept in hospital for a longer period of time, which is also not the best situation. So what we do through our housing programme is find temporary accomodation for wheelchair users to be discharged to while their long term housing solution is being looked at. Our tenants have a six month contract. In which time they are assisted in their rehabilitation and their requirements in their own home to help meet their needs. This apartment is the first in Crawley. We have 21 apartments such as this across the country. We lease the apartment from housing associations such as The Guinness Trust so if there are any housing associations which identify a need, we are very happy to discuss options. The apartments already in place were identified as being needed in that area by the NHS and we will carry on trying to identify the needs of such apartments in all areas. We already have apartments in Brighton all the way up to Glasgow. The apartment is part of the Guinness Trust’s 500th project and has been operational for just over a month”.

We then spoke to our local MP Henry Smith who told us “This is a really good and it’s great that Aspire have opened their twenty first unit here in Crawley. It is specifically designed to help people who have suffered a spinal cord injury. To be able to spend six months here, to be able to learn how to live a normal life again is great. the unit is specially adapted to help them so they know what they may need when returning back to their own home. With an injury of this kind happening every eight hours this type of work is essential to the community. Alot of people do not know about Aspire but that is not unusual as it is relatively rare to know someone with a spinal injury. It is really important that for the people who have to transform their lives they have the support from charities such as Aspire. It’s also wonderful that Aspire have chosen Crawley for their this new unit. Being able to be discharged from hospital is a benefit to everyone, including the cost on the NHS, so this serves as a great function to everyone involved. It also helps the wheelchair user learn what they may need adapting in their own home and what doesn’t. This type of injury is a devastating and very serious situation for those effected. It’s great to be aware of the help that is offered by such charities as Aspire”.

We met Mark at Barley House. Mark had recently been involved in an accident which left him paralysed. Mark has been in the apartment for a month now and looked like he was adapting very well to his new situation. We would like to wish Mark all the best for his future.

We took some pictures while visiting.

Take a trip into the past at Record Office

Take a trip into the past at Record Office

Schooldays were very different for Victorian children in West Sussex. You can find out what lessons were like by taking a trip into the past at the County Record Office in Chichester.

The Record Office, in Orchard Street, holds mid-morning sessions on the first Wednesday of each month, for people wanting to learn about family history in a relaxed atmosphere over a cup of tea or coffee.

Next week’s session, for an hour from 10am, will be focusing on old school records, with information on Victorian school life and archive sources such as head teachers’ log books, admission registers, punishment books and school photographs.

Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard, with responsibility for the Record Office, said: “In recent years family history has become one of the fastest growing recreational interests in the country. If you’ve watched celebrities unravel their past on BBC’s ‘Who do You Think You Are’, now is your time to join in the fun.

“The coffee time sessions at our County Record Office are a chance for you to speak to professionals who will help you discover your past in an informal manner.”

Sessions so far have included army records and dating old photographs. Future sessions include introducing computer sources and quarter sessions court records.

The County Record Office is nationally assessed as one of the top 10 local record offices in the country.

Tickets are £7.50 and need to be booked in advance. Call the Record Office on 01243 753602 or email, records.office@westsussex.gov.uk

Another Green Flag hat-trick for Crawley

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Three of Crawley’s attractive parks have again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag.

Beautiful Tilgate Park has received the award for the tenth consecutive year while Goffs Park, in Southgate, and the Memorial Gardens in the town centre have picked up their fourth Green Flags – the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

Tilgate Park, set in 400 acres, scooped its first Green Flag in 2002. Winners are judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained and involve the local community.

Tilgae Park

Tilgate Park boasts a nature centre, golf course, lakes, lawns and gardens, woodland walks and bridleways.

Goffs Park has a lake, 18-hole pitch and putt course, miniature steam railway, state-of-the-art play facilities and is home to Crawley Museum.

The Memorial Gardens are an oasis of calm in the middle of the bustling town centre, with lunching office workers and sunbathers enjoying the lush lawns and vibrant plants.

Councillor Lenny Walker, Cabinet member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and we are delighted to have won these awards.

“For Tilgate to have been awarded the Green Flag for 10 consecutive years is nothing short of amazing.

“All of these flags demonstrate the continued commitment of the council and its dedicated staff to keeping these great parks and open spaces so special, while providing a wide range of leisure activities. It is also just reward for a huge contribution from the Friends of Goffs Park.”

The Green Flag Award is sponsored by the Department for Communities and Local Government, English Heritage and Natural England.

Crawley MP Supports Local Life-Saving Cancer Research

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Henry Smith MP is highlighting Cancer Research UK’s work in the South East and backing the charity’s bid to make Crawley a thriving environment for medical research.

Henry met Cancer Research UK’s doctors, scientists and supporters from London and the South East at a special reception at Westminster recently.

Around five people are diagnosed with cancer every hour in the South East* but the good news is that thousands of mums, dads, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters across the region are alive today thanks to research into cancer.

Henry said:

“I was keen to find out more about work funded by Cancer Research UK in the South East. I feel proud that research in the South East makes such a significant contribution to the fight against cancer. It’s heartening to know that by supporting Cancer Research UK’s work local people could be making a big difference to cancer patients here on their doorstep.

“I am pleased that this Government has committed to investing an addition £200 million into to cancer drug research and to provide the funding needed to deliver 1,200 additional specialists involved in cancer services by 2012. Despite opposition, the national health fund will be boosted by £11.5 billion over the next four years which will go some way in supporting the work of organisations such as Cancer Research UK.”

Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, thanked Mr Smith for his support, saying:

“Cancer Research UK is working hard in every region of the UK to beat cancer. Ninety per cent of the population live within 30 miles of a laboratory or hospital where we’re funding life-saving research.

“We welcome the Government’s recent commitments that will help us with the research we fund in the NHS. We now want the Government to involve Cancer Research UK in planning for the future of medical research in the UK.”

People in the South East who take part in Race for Life make a huge contribution to Cancer Research UK’s work by raising vital funds.

As the Race for Life series draws to a close for 2011, Cancer Research UK is asking participants to make all the fun and emotion of the big day count – by returning the money they have raised to the charity, where it will be used to fund research which saves lives.

Just the ticket – course to help more independent travel

Adults with learning difficulties in West Sussex will now be able to travel more independently thanks to a new training initiative.

West Sussex County Council’s Adults’ Services has commissioned a new independent travel training service for two of its day services, Coastal Enterprises, Worthing, and Burnside, Burgess Hill.

The aim is to help people with learning difficulties gain confidence in travelling on public transport.

The charity Grace Eyre, which supports people with learning difficulties across Sussex, is running the project.

It teaches skills needed for people to travel around their community safely using public transport, either with the support of a volunteer travel buddy or travel on their own.

County Council Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, Peter Catchpole, said: “The travel training scheme is a great way for people with learning difficulties to gain a little bit more independence.

“Grace Eyre have been successful with the scheme over the last four years in the Brighton and Hove area, working closely with local bus companies and Southern Rail.

“Learners are assessed individually throughout the course and can progress onto another course, which teaches the skills to support others to travel.”

In the coming months, the project will be recruiting more volunteer travel buddies. To find out more, contact Sarah Howse on 07841067281.

Crawley MP Honours Local Apprenticeship Schemes In Parliament

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

This morning in the House of Commons the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, joined with Crawley MP, Henry Smith, in congratulating Crawley-based Virgin Atlantic Airlines and Central Sussex College for their work in creating new apprenticeships for local people.

Henry said:

“I’m delighted that the Business Secretary during Commons Questions paid tribute to Virgin Atlantic’s creation of 42 engineering apprenticeships along with Central Sussex College administering a further 900 apprenticeships, both in Crawley.

“The Business Secretary responded by honouring these two organisations as having helped in boosting the number of apprenticeships offered in Crawley by 62% over the past year.

“This significant increase in Apprenticeship opportunities goes some way in explaining why figures released from the Office for National Statistics yesterday show that the private sector has added 520,000 jobs in the last year. Only yesterday I was able to announce 170 new local jobs with Ceres Power and last month 600 new jobs with Siemens.

“Crawley jobs and Crawley skills are on the move again.”

Crawley MP Welcomes News Of More Local Jobs & Falling Unemployment

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Henry Smith has welcomed an announcement from Ceres Power that they have opened a new technology centre in Crawley creating 170 new jobs in the local economy.

Henry said:

“Companies such as local, leading green economy firm Ceres Power are proving how much of an asset they are for our town, having just announced 170 new positions. Today’s announcement follows on from Siemens decision to create 600 new positions in Three Bridges.

“It was reassuring to learn today that, in the three months to May, unemployment data (released today) shows joblessness continuing to fall in Crawley (now at 4.1%). For those still out of work I appreciate it remains 100% of a problem but I’m convinced that reducing red tape and our national debt will further stimulate the economy.

Consultation begins on Fire and Rescue Services merger in Sussex

Consultation begins on Fire and Rescue Services merger

THE Fire and Rescue Service in West Sussex starts a 12-week public consultation tomorrow (July 14) to seek the views of the public, businesses and staff on its potential merger with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

The consultation is being launched with public meetings in Crawley, which is also tomorrow (Thursday 14th July), and Worthing, which is on Tuesday 19th July.

The Crawley meeting is in the The Fire Service Training Centre (the ex-library building), Northgate Avenue. The Worthing one is in Worthing Library, Richmond Road. Both start at 7pm.

Throughout the consultation Fire Officers will be attending County Local Committee meetings, open days and public events. They will also hold specially arranged forums for partners, businesses, the voluntary sector and members of public. Feedback can also be given online, by post or phone.

West Sussex County Council and the East Sussex Fire Authority (ESFA) have been examining options for closer collaboration between the two Fire Services to see if it would improve performance and protect frontline services from the financial pressures on public sector spending.

The latest business case suggests a full merger under a new combined fire authority for the whole of Sussex provides the best opportunity to make savings of £3.8 million while safeguarding services to the community.

There are no plans to close any fire stations in the merger.

The consultation will run from July 14th – October 6th. ESFA is also consulting on the proposed merger and both ESFA and the County Council will consider the feedback and a final business case before making a final decision at separate meetings in December.

County Fire Officer Max Hood hopes as many people as possible will take part in the consultation.

He said: “The pressures on public spending mean all local authorities are working to find ways of providing essential services with reduced budgets.

“A merger would see a significant change in the management and support costs of the Fire & Rescue Service in West Sussex. It could also mean we can protect fire stations and the other frontline services that people need.

“We’re still waiting for details on the future funding from the government before the business case on a possible merger can be completed, but it’s also important to listen to the views of local people before a final decision is taken.

“I hope as many as possible will attend the meetings and public events to speak to Fire Officers, read the consultation document or seek information via the websites before giving us their feedback on the way forward.”

Pete Bradbury, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “Our priority remains to provide excellent fire and rescue services to our residents.

“In the current difficult financial climate, we believe this innovative approach of merging the fire services of East and West Sussex and Brighton and Hove could enable us to continue to deliver excellent services and improve our operational capability, while reducing back office, management and administration costs.

“The views of the public are important to us and I hope residents, businesses, organisations and stakeholders will participate in the consultation. No decision will be made until the results of the consultation have been considered.”

The business case and consultation document is available online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire . Copies of the consultation document are available in libraries, help points, and in reception areas of local authorities, and printed copies can be sent on request.

You can contact the consultation team via email at fireredesign@westsussex.gov.uk  or write to Fire Redesign Team, WSFRS HQ, Northgate, Chichester PO19 1BD, or phone 01243 753706.

If approved by central government a merger would take effect on 1st April 2013.

Learning difficulty plans discussed by Committee

Proposals to transform West Sussex County Council services for adults with learning difficulties were discussed by Members last week.

The Adults’ Services Select Committee received a report outlining how the service will be looked at over the coming years.

In addition to the changes to the eligibility criteria already agreed, there are five other areas of proposed change being looked at:

• Decommissioning the Alinora Crescent respite service in Worthing and re-providing the service elsewhere.

• Commission supported living services in a more cost effective and efficient way.

• Possible outsourcing of the County Council’s Supported Living Service.

• Review and remodelling of learning difficulty community health and social care teams.

• Review and remodelling of learning difficulty day services.

Chairman Irene Richards said: “The Committee emphasised that we want to be involved in any proposals that come forward at an early stage, so they can be fully scrutinised and to allow us to input into the decision making process.

“Officers assured us that those who use the service will be fully consulted at all stages on the proposals as they are developed.”

The learning difficulties service is funded by the County Council and NHS West Sussex. Any savings identified for the County Council would also apply to NHS West Sussex.

WEST SUSSEX FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE APPEAL FOR SCRAP CARS

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Got an old car you’re thinking of scrapping? Want to help support your local firefighters?

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is once again appealing for people to donate scrap cars and help firefighters hone their road traffic collision rescue skills.

A number of Fire Stations across the county are in need of extra cars for crews to train on and practice the latest preparation, stabilisation and cutting techniques they need when they are rescuing casualties from life-threatening car crashes.

Richard Davy, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Deputy District Commander for Crawley & Mid Sussex, explains why the supply of scrap cars is so important:

“Attending road traffic collisions and being able to quickly and safely rescue people trapped in their cars is a core part of a firefighter’s role and undoubtedly saves many lives each year. Getting practical ‘hands on’ training is obviously a vital part of maintaining and developing those rescue skills.

“It could be a matter of life or death when we arrive at an incident, with often only a narrow window of opportunity to either make space for medical stabilisation or rapid casualty removal to facilitate some of the more complicated medical procedures, so having cars to practice on is crucial.

“For many years local scrap merchant Mark Maynard from Autocovery has been donating scrap cars to us for Crawley, Horsham, Horley and East Grinstead Fire Stations. However, over the last few months his stocks have run really low and obviously this has a serious knock-on effect on the number of vehicles available to us. That’s why we are urging anyone thinking of scrapping their car to consider donating it to us.”

For anyone wishing to donate their car, Autocovery will pick it up free of charge, process the vehicle log book and deliver he car to the Fire Station. In the first instance, contact Mark on 07860 667785 or 01293 415909.

Carbon cutting success for K2 Crawley management

Carbon cutting success for K2 Crawley management

Carbon cutting at K2 Crawley has helped Freedom Leisure obtain the Carbon Trust standard.

The not-for-profit organisation who manage Crawley Borough Council’s leisure centre was awarded the standard for the centres they run across the country.

An energy management plan drawn up by CBC and Freedom Leisure in 2009 helped K2 Crawley cut its carbon by eight per cent over the last two years.

Some measures introduced included fitting infrared sensors in stores and offices to make sure lights go out when rooms aren’t in use; removing unnecessary light fittings; installing electrical sub-meters which highlighted high energy use areas and a lot of raising staff awareness.

In 2009/10 energy use at k2 Crawley dropped by 8.1 per cent and saved £16,000 a year.

And 40 per cent of all electricity used and 27 per cent of heat used came from renewable energy.

Councillor Ken Trussell, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “It’s fantastic news for Freedom Leisure and Crawley Council. We’ve worked hard with them over the last few years to build a carbon cutting plan and implement the changes and it’s fantastic to see it working so well.

“Freedom are a great partner for the council and this standard shows not only their commitment to the environment but also how well Freedom and the council work together.”

Freedom Leisure is proud to join a respected group of 621 organisations that have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard since it was launched in June 2008.

Based on a rigorous independent assessment, the Carbon Trust Standard certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their operations and are committed to reducing further year-on-year.

Jeff Hart MD of Freedom Leisure said: “Freedom Leisure is working very hard internally and with all its partners to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure we offer fantastic leisure facilities that operate at their optimum when it comes to utility consumption. The award of the Carbon Trust Standard shows all the hard work is coming to fruition.
