Crawley MP Seeks To Raise Profile Of Ovarian Cancer In Crawley

Almost 7,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year which is in spite of the fact that, if detected early, survival rates can be at about 90%.

Henry Smith said:

“I have today added information concerning the importance of diagnosing ovarian cancer early onto my Citizens Advice Bureau stall at the County Mall Advice Shop to help raise awareness.

“Some symptoms of ovarian cancer can be similar to more common conditions, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and cannot always be detected through regular screening tests.  The signs can include a swollen stomach, tummy pains and an inability to eat or feeling full.

“I was first struck regarding the importance of ovarian cancer awareness when a young local resident met with me on the issue last year. Fortunately, she was diagnosed just in the nick of time and I’m delighted was successfully treated but other are sadly not so fortunate. In Parliament I have joined a cross party group of MPs to help raise awareness and locally I’ve been pleased to support local cancer services, such as the new radiotherapy equipment at Crawley Hospital.”
