NCT celebrate in style

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

On the 21st July at 7:20pm the first guests at the Crawley NCT (National Childbirth Trust) event ‘The Do!’ began to queue outside Club 7878 in Horley.  They had been told that the first 50 guests through the door at 8pm would receive a gorgeous goodie bag (some of the details of which had been posted on the events Facebook page over the last few weeks).  The first people admitted were greeted by the branch co-chairs – Alexis Ozmen and Clare Hoggan who presented them with their much anticipated bags.  The club was decked out in balloons in NCT colours, there were cupcakes and nibbles for all to enjoy as they dipped into their goodie bags to discover the treats within and sipped their first drink.  They were also treated to some close up magic by magicians Rob Sharp and Simon Archer.

While the DJ played some excellent party tunes, the guests continued to arrive before they were welcomed by the Co-Chairs, followed by an address  by Member of Parliament for Crawley Henry Smith who shared his experience with the NCT having attended Ante Natal Classes in the Branch.  After the final speaker Jules Jones who spoke about being a parent and volunteering with the NCT Henry Smith pulled the first 3 prizes in the fabulous prize draw then the lights were dimmed and the music cranked up and everyone concentrated on enjoying themselves.

The NCT is the UK’s largest parenting charity providing support in pregnancy with our excellent antenatal classes, supporting post-natally with breastfeeding support and early years classes all held locally within branches.  Crawley branch have a weekly drop in – Bumps, Babes and Tiddlypeeps (Held on a Tuesday morning at Furnace Green Community Centre, Ashburnham Drive 10– 11:30am – everyone is welcome for a suggested donation of £1 to assist with hire costs) and hold Nearly New Sales twice yearly (in March and November) where anyone can buy and sell good quality pregnancy, baby and child related items.  As well as these regular events there are also ad hoc social events for parents and their children (for example a Teddy Bears picnic and Christmas party as well as coffee mornings and soft play gatherings) and evening events for the hard working parents such as pamper evenings and fashion shows.

The night was danced away

In order to put on all these great events the branch is in need of volunteers.  Volunteering is great fun and does not need to be time consuming – there are roles to suit everyone, committee posts which are a regular role as well as the smaller one off things like hosting a social event (large or small) and helping out at our nearly new sales.  Whatever role a person takes on they can rely on the fact that they will be part of a fantastic team, have great fun meeting new people and will receive full support in their role.  To find out more about the branch visit the facebook page by clicking here,  email the chairs chair@nctcrawley.org.uk or call our branch enquiries line 08442436098.

‘The Do!’ is the first event of its kind and was an enormous success.  Its purpose was to thank all the volunteers of the branch past, present and future and everyone enjoyed themselves, lots of guests won prizes in the draw which were all donated by local businesses and the goodie bags were very well received.  Alexis and Clare would like to thank Ian Metcalfe of Club 7878 (and Bar 429) for the use of the venue which was perfect, Sabine Edwards of Pendleton Events who donated her time and ensured the event ran smoothly, all the donors to the prize draw and goodie bags, Rob and Simon for wowing people with card tricks and the sponsors of the cupcakes and nibbles.

A great night was had by all and everyone is now crying out for more!

Music to the ears

Crawley Borough Council and the Expanding Communities Project set up a free Polish cultural celebration at Hazelwick School.

The council, in partnership with St Wilfrid’s and Hazelwick schools, organised the Expanding Communities Project at the Three Bridges-based school on Friday November 12.

We took some footage and pictures of the evening for you to enjoy.

The event is a result of close work between the Expanding Communities Project worker and both schools and aims to enhance community cohesion.

This free event was open to everyone and ran from 6-8pm and began with presentations prepared by students of St Wilfrid’s and Hazelwick schools. Funding has been provided by both schools and the Migration Impact Fund.

The main part of the event was Chopin’s recital for the grand piano performed by professional artist, Pawel Ulman.

Finally a selection of traditional Polish dishes were available to try with an opportunity to socialise and network.

Councillor Nigel Boxall, Cabinet member for Community Engagement, said: “Events like these help to build cohesive communities and develop positive relationships between people of different cultural backgrounds.

“I’m delighted that the council supported this event and urge all residents, Polish or otherwise, to get involved or the future.”

For more information on future events contact Agnieszka Tworkowska, Polish Community Worker, by calling 07824 696584 or email polishcw.crawley@cvs-arunwide.org.uk

Crawley Happy Times at The Annual Crawley Irish Festival

On Sunday, 30th August 2009, flags came out, outfits were donned, jigs were performed and music was played.

Where did this all happen? At the 14th annual Crawley Irish Festival, held on Southgate playing fields. This festival was supported by the Irish Government, through the Dion fund, Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Crawley Town Centre Partnership with additional sponsorship from the Murphy Group and O’Connor Utilites Limited.

The weather was slightly breezy on the day but this did not deter the hundreds of people who attended! Crawley Happy Times had the honour of a stand at the event.  We set up and proudly awaited any interest in our posters and pens.

The day was full of entertainment and Irish dancers, showing off their talents, from 3 different stages strategically set about the field.  There were various other stands, all raising money for the next Irish Festival in 2010. There were some of the usual faces; you know, the ones who always help out and raise money for great causes, and, of course some new fundraisers too.  We had the pleasure of seeing the Worshipful the Mayor Brenda Burgess, her lovely husband and we also met John Nolan, Chairman of the Celtic and Irish Cultural Society, who will be speaking to Crawley Happy Times in the near future to update us on the money raised. As soon as he has recovered from arranging this amazing event, that is!

On the Dome Stage the entertainment was relentless: The Olive Stones opened the musical interlude and were swiftly followed by Martin Ruddy, Kathy Durkin, Reelstrings and last, but not least, Shawn Cuddy. On the Trad stage we were treated to a great array of Irish music by Brogue, Flying Toads, Dun The Veil, Siansa and Crannog. The last stage; the Irish Dancing Stage, was the venue for the Irish dance competition. The beautiful children vying for the top prize were either part of the O’Brien School of Dancing or the Andromeda Edmonds School of Dancing.  The dancers were immaculately presented and moved like angels. Pictures to follow.

Gordon Skeggs looked after the main stage, including the sound and lighting. Gordon now has a big, red coach which tours on roadshows, promotions, festivals and various other events. The name of Gordon’s company, Just Unique is very apt as so is Gordon!

Obviously, at an Irish Festival, there had to be a beer tent. Drinkers weren’t disappointed: Guinness and various other lagers were on tap. After all, a festival is not a festival without a beer tent!

People brought picnics and blankets (some even brought their own chairs) and sat on the field enjoying the music.  There were plenty of activities to keep the children happy, including two bouncy castles and a mini fun fair.  The local constabulary were on hand, keeping a watchful eye on the day, although, thankfully, their arresting presence was deterrance enough.

The St. John Ambulance crew were also on hand to help with any injuries, which were, thankfully, minimal.

If you have never been to the Crawley Irish Festival in the past 14 years then, we recommend you put this date in your diary for next year.

It occurs on the same August Bank Holiday Sunday, every year. Not only is it a wonderful day for the whole family, it is also a chance to meet up with friends for nibbles and a drink or two.

We very much look forward to attending next year and hope John enjoyed it enough to want to do it all over again.

Our thanks go to John Nolan for the stand, Linda Silence of Visions Photography for taking some great pictures on our behalf and to all those who came to our stand in support of Crawley Happy Times. Oh and a special thank you to Madeleine Mills representing The Lions Club, who let us borrow some ballons for our stand.
