Speaking last night in the House of Commons metal theft debate, Henry Smith MP, said:
“Last year in Crawley there were 108 reported metal thefts, including lead removed from eight schools and three churches which causes not only unnecessary expense, but also significant water damage as the missing metal is often only discovered after it rains.
“Crawley commuters too often face misery on the railways when cable theft, often miles away, causes mass disruption to south east and London services, not to mention the millions this costs the economy in lost production and lost work.”
Henry Smith congratulated Crawley police officers for their efforts and welcomed an announced change in the law saying:
“It is right that the Government now introduces a cashless system for metal transactions so there is an audit trail that protects legitimate firms but will drive out the rouge dealers.”
