The ‘Pillars to the Plough’ charity event organised by Ifield Chestnut House will contain something different next year.
On Easter Sunday in April 2012, Tom Vanhinsbergh and Ben Le Beau will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for a three legged run/walk. The record so far is 40.02 miles within twelve hours, so Tom and Ben are going to walk 41/2 miles starting from the Plough Inn, Ifield to the pillars in Brighton, then back again.
We popped in to meet Tom and Ben to chat about their interesting record attempt. Tom told us “We wanted to get more people involved with the ‘Pillars to Plough’ charity event and this seemed to be a novel and good way of raising more awareness. Also we are very keen on raising money for the Olive Tree Charity which is a cancer support centre at Crawley Hospital who assist families before, during and after treatment. We are hoping to raise at least £2000 for this wonderful charity to help the, start a ‘move more programme’ which encourages patients to get more involved in sports, dance and walking clubs. The Ifield Chestnut House event raises money for The Olive Tree and Chestnut Tree House, but we are hoping to give all the money we raise to Olive tree for this new programme”.
We asked Ben how he got involved in this event. Tom told us “I was sat at work one day when I received this email inviting me to take part in a record breaking three legged walk. After some more communication between Tom and myself, I decided it wasn’t such a bad idea. We have already had a couple of training runs, so to speak. You would be amazed at how many different ways there are to walk in a three legged position. We have started simple but are now moving on to more rough terrain with hills and camber to the paths to test out if we will be able to make the full course “.
The ‘Pillars to Plough’ walk/run is open to everyone. Next year there will be a 20 mile walk, a 20 mile walk, a 5 mile walk and a 1 mile walk for the patience of The Olive Tree. Ben and Tom will have to start their record attempt at 4am to be able to get there and back in the daylight.
You can donate in many forms to this amazing record breaking attempt by clicking here. You can also keep up with the progress o the boys on their blog here.
We would like to encourage everyone to get behind these two crazy men <heehee> and support them in any way you can. It would be nice to see Crawley in the Guinness World Book of Records.
Please watch this interview with Tom & Ben to hear more about their record breaking, charity fund raising event coming on the 8th April 2012.
Here is a short clip with Ben & Tom training…..we are sure it’s going to get better….right
All the best!
