‘Your Day. Your Say’ public meeting in Crawley

A public meeting on the future of day services and activities across West Sussex takes place in Crawley next month.

It’s part of West Sussex County Council’s ‘Your Day. Your Say’ public consultation, asking residents their views on a proposed new model for day services, including what type of day activities they would like to see available in the community.

The public meeting in Crawley is one of six being held across West Sussex during the three month consultation, which runs until Wednesday October 27.

It takes place on Thursday September 9, from 6.30pm to 8pm, in Crawley Town Football Club, Broadfield Stadium, Brighton Road, Crawley, RH11 9RX.

There will be a presentation on the proposals and a question and answer session for the public.

Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Peter Catchpole said: “Research has shown us that residents want a wide range of day activities, rather than just attending a traditional day centre.

“We need to adapt our service and we want to hear from the public what they think of our proposed new model for day services.”

Residents can also get involved in the public consultation in the following ways:

• Online – visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/yourdayyoursay to find out all about the proposals and fill in the online questionnaire.

• Email – haveyoursay@westsussex.gov.uk.

Review of services for young people

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Review of services for young people

Calling all groups and organisations who run activities and services for children and young people aged 10 and over in Crawley.

Crawley Strategic Youth Action Partnership (CSYAP) is looking at the services available to young people in the town. This review will focus on identifying where activities and services are available and what young people think of them.

The outcome of the review will be used by local partner agencies – Crawley Borough Council, Spurgeons Childcare, Sussex Police, West Sussex County Council’s Youth Service and West Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Service

- to ensure future services better meet the needs of Crawley’s young people.

If you are providing services and activities for young people we want to hear from you. CSYAP has created a form for organisations to complete, which will enable it to monitor what is happening, where it’s happening and how.

This will make CSYAP better placed to respond to the needs of young people.

Groups can fill in the online form by visiting www.crawley.gov.uk/youngactive and clicking on the second survey on the page. The forms must be completed by Friday September 17.

Councillor Nigel Boxall, Cabinet member for Community Engagement, said: “I strongly urge all groups to fill in this survey. A wide range of responses will give us a much better idea of what activities are currently on offer for children and young people locally and where there are gaps.

“We want to know more about what is out there but we need your help. So please go online and fill in the survey.”

When the review is complete, CSYAP will be seeking funding to establish a website for young people. All the information collected will be included on a database of events and activities on the site.

The website will be accessible for both young people and organisations who provide services so that young people can always find out about the latest services and activities available for them.

If you are a young person in Crawley, you can complete our online survey on the same page – www.crawley.gov.uk/youngactive – giving your views on activities and services.

This September Freedom Leisure embraces Exercise4Life

Join the challenge, have fun and get fitter!

This September Freedom Leisure is encouraging local communities to get fit, have fun and participate in this year’s Exercise4Life, a UK wide event, which runs from the 1st – 30th September. Due to its popularity, the event has expanded from last year’s “Swim for Life” challenge, to now include seven sporting challenges; cycling, running, walking, hula hooping, dancing, Nordic walking and swimming. Freedom Leisure is encouraging Exercise4Life participants to complete their run, cycling or swim challenges at their local Freedom Leisure centre.

The main aim of Exercise4Life is to get the UK moving and ultimately improve the nation’s health through exercise. To take part participants just need to sign up at www.exercise4life.org and select their challenges. Each challenge can be tailored i.e. runners, cyclists and swimmers can all choose to cover 1, 5 or 10 miles. Whilst sponsorship is not required to enter, sports enthusiasts can sign up to support the WRIGHT Foundation Research, which carries out continued research into the prevention and improvement of chronic medical conditions through activity and exercise. This includes research into cancer, heart and lung disease. All fundraisers will receive a certificate of achievement, whilst top fund-raisers have the chance to win a prize, such as a luxury weekend break for two to a Marriott Hotel.

Jeff Hart, Managing Director, Freedom Leisure said “We see it as a key priority to support these national health initiatives. Many of our staff have signed up for the challenge and we hope that Freedom Leisure members and non-members alike will make September a month to focus on health and fitness. Not only will this challenge personally benefit participants, but if you sign up to raise money for the WRIGHT Foundation Research we can learn more about how exercise can potentially combat these life limiting diseases”.

Could you help children get to school safely?

Could you help children get to school safely?

West Sussex County Council wants to recruit more school crossing patrols – affectionately known as Lollipop men and women.

The patrols play a vital role in helping thousands of children cross the road safely to get to and from school every day.

The County Council is appealing for anyone who might be interested to come forward and is particularly interested to hear from people who might be able to fill vacancies at:

• East Wittering Community Primary School, Chichester.

• Pound Hill Infant and Junior schools, Crawley.

• Rumbleswhyke CE Infants School, Chichester.

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “We are keen to fill these vacancies as soon as possible but we know we will have more positions to fill in the future, so we would like to hear from people who might be interested in working in other areas.

“It’s a very rewarding job with all the usual benefits you would expect such as paid holiday. We provide a uniform and full training and there is no upper age limit – many of our patrols are in their seventies and still doing a fantastic job.”

The County Council employs patrols at 130 sites across West Sussex at the start and finish of each school day. The rate of pay is £6.84 per hour rising to £7.19 by annual increments and of course patrols only work during term-time.

Although the exact times vary from site to site, the commitment is usually 30-40 minutes each morning and afternoon.

Lionel added: “We would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in working as a relief School Crossing Patrol to cover vacancies, holidays and sickness.”

If you want to find out more please call 01243 642985 or log onto www.westsussex.gov.uk and search for ‘school crossing patrols’.

Saving energy with UTILISE

Saving energy with UTILISE

Seven West Sussex businesses have received funding to improve their energy efficiency – meaning an annual saving of more than 73 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

It comes from the first round of UTILISE action grants. The funding is available to West Sussex businesses and voluntary and community organisations for energy saving projects.

The successful applicants are:

• Rustington Golf Centre – updating their lighting system with energy efficient lamps. This will save £2,400 from their annual electricity bill.

• Sussex Hardwood Workshops, West Stoke near Chichester –roof insulation and installing a wood fuelled heater to run on sawdust and off-cuts. The improvements are part of ongoing work by the carpentry business to minimise their environmental impact.

• Goodwood Metalcraft, Chichester – installing a heating management system to reduce gas use. This will reduce heating costs by 30 percent.

• The Orchard Restaurant, West Grinstead – installing double glazing and cavity wall insulation.

• Dove Lodge, Littlehampton – replacing their boiler with a more efficient model.

• Kittiwake Developments, Littlehampton – updating their lighting system with energy efficient lighting.

• Spellman High Voltage, Pulborough – updating their lighting system with energy efficient lighting.

Deputy Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Keith Blake said: “This initiative helps organisations in a practical way to save money on bills and look after the environment.

“These projects will make considerable carbon and cost savings and will provide inspiration for other organisations to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Goodwood Metalcraft Director and General Manager Mike Hughes said: “Promoting a green economy is definitely the right way out of the recession, and the grants are pleasingly straightforward to apply for.”

Orchard Restaurant Manager David Chadburn added: “Having already insulated the loft, fitted radiator controls and installed energy efficient lighting and appliances, this was the next step for us. We’re now looking at renewable energy, especially solar panels.”

The next round of UTILISE Action Grant Funding is now open. Capital grants of £1,000 to £10,000 are available.

Free UTILISE workshops, to give businesses and organisations advice on how to save energy and money, are being held in Worthing, Horsham and Arun over the coming months.

The funding and workshops are managed by the West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership. For further information visit the website at www.westsussexsbp.org.uk.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE DIRECTOR CHALLENGES BUSINESSES TO PUT FIRST AID ON CSR AGENDA

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

ST JOHN AMBULANCE DIRECTOR CHALLENGES BUSINESSES TO PUT FIRST AID ON CSR AGENDA

St John Ambulance South East Director Sabarah Cursons, wants employers to recognise first aid as a vital element of their corporate social responsibility, not just as a legal tick box, but as a way of reducing the number of unnecessary deaths.

The charity recently found that each year up to 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live*. Up until now the magnitude of this problem was not known.

In response to the situation, St John Ambulance is challenging UK businesses to take action by providing first aid training to as many employees as possible as part of their corporate and social responsibilities or as an employee benefit.

‘Many organisations have CSR policies or community initiatives that tackle problems we face as a society, such as making their practices more sustainable. It’s encouraging that businesses want to prevent long-term effects on our environment but by also training more people in first aid they can give staff the ability to make an immediate difference between a life saved and a life lost,’ says Sabarah.

‘Companies are already required to train a minimum number of staff in first aid. We are asking them to go further and train as many employees as possible or at least help spread basic first aid knowledge within the workplace. We can reduce the number of people dying needlessly while employees feel empowered, cared for and recognise the positive contribution their employer is making. Many businesses offer employees gym memberships or language lessons, but what could be more important that equipping your workforce with the skills to save a life?’

Research by St John Ambulance found that nearly two thirds (59%) of people would like first aid training at work, further justifying the argument that training should be offered as an employee benefit.

’First aid training helps to keep employees safe, and provides them with life saving knowledge that benefits not only their colleagues, but their families, friends and community,’ continues Sabarah. ‘What better legacy for an organisation to leave than life itself, and the ability to preserve it.’

St John Ambulance is reinforcing this message with a trade advertising campaign which builds on the success of its recent award-winning** national adverts. The charity plans to introduce a national awards programme next year to recognise businesses leading the way in first aid.

St John Ambulance can work with businesses to find a solution that suits them and can offer in-house training if needed. For a free needs assessment or to book a first aid course, call 08447 70 48 01 or text ‘needs’ to 88008 or visit www.sja.org.uk.

Girls Shine in Oakwood Summer Tournament

Girls Shine in Oakwood Summer Tournament

Oakwood Youth Girls section hosted their second annual all girls six-a-side tournament at the weekend with teams descending on Tinsley Lane from East & West Sussex as well as from out of County.

Thirty teams and over two hundred girls competed from under ten through to under fifteen. Despite some inclement weather, the atmosphere throughout the day was enjoyed by players and spectators alike. In addition to the football the BBQ, bouncy castle and slide, refreshments, professional photographers, raffle for a team kit and a Managers penalty shoot out competition all helped to enhance the enjoyable experience.

The standard of football was outstanding and each league was highly competitive with teams battling it out to come through the group stages into the semi-finals.

Oakwood Youth had a successful competition with the Under 10’s getting all the way to the final only to lose out to a very strong Croydon Borough side. The Under fifteen’s entered two teams and both made it to the semi-final stages. Oakwood Red made it to the final by beating Pevensey and Westham whilst the Oakwood Black team lost their semi to group stage winners Seahaven Harriers. The final between Oakwood Red and Seahaven was a tight game decided by a single goal that meant the hosts finished as runners up.

The highlight of the afternoon for the Oakwood Club was in the under twelve division where the team ran out eventual winners. Having played seven other teams to get to the semi-finals the Girls played local rivals Maidenbower United in a close game that went to extra time and penalties. Oakwood held their nerve to progress to the final against Southdown Tigers. In another close game the winning goal was scored late on by Elese Badjada to win the trophy and send the home support wild.

All trophies were presented by two representatives from Chelsea Ladies, and England internationals, Becky Jane and Shelby Hills.

Jane Kirkham, Oakwood Youth Girls Secretary, said, “This has been a roaring success, both on and off the pitch for Girls football. So many people have commented on a fabulous tournament and the fact that it is one of only a handful of Girls Only tournaments in the County, supported by Chelsea Ladies, has meant a great deal.”

There’ll be rich pickings in your own back yard this autumn, gardeners told

There’ll be rich pickings in your own back yard this autumn, gardeners told

GARDENERS in West Sussex are being urged to take advantage of the rich pickings that will literally be in their own back yard this autumn by getting a composter.

The call comes from Better Tomorrows, the independent community company that promotes sustainable living in the county, which has tied up with a manufacturer to offer bargain-priced composters.

John de Mierre, Chairman of Better Tomorrows, said: “Composting is a cost effective and natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into a valuable food product for your garden.

“It helps to improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels and helps to suppress plant disease.

“Composting also helps to reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill, so helping to save money, energy and water as well as reducing greenhouse gases.”

Autumn is ideal for composting, he said.

“This is because there is a great deal of nutrient-rich waste available.

“Spent bedding plants, grass cuttings, autumn leaves and prunings can all be composted throughout the autumn and winter months, to produce a rich compost ideal for spring planting,” said John.

Much of the food waste in household bins can also be composted.

“Anything from fruit and vegetable peelings to egg shells, tea bags, pet hair and even shredded paper can be composted,” said John.

The UK’s top selling composter, the Compost Converter, which has been endorsed by more than 85 per cent of local authorities for use by their residents, is available from only £14 plus delivery. It is made of recycled plastic and has a 10-year guarantee.

For full details visit www.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444.

Crawley Tigers to raise more cash for Pakistani flood victims

Crawley Tigers to raise more cash for Pakistani flood victims

Crawley Tigers FC raised more than £4,100 for the victims of the Pakistani flood disaster by washing cars on Saturday (August 14) – but they’re not stopping there.

The local football club, fresh from cleaning lots of dirty cars at the mosque in Broadfield on Broadwood Rise, is supporting a six-a-side football tournament next month for leading charities.

The charity car wash brought in more than £1,400 in donations on the day, with the extra £2,700 donated via the Justgiving web page for the event. This page – at www.justgiving.com/CrawleyTigersFC-carwash – will remain live until Friday September 3.

According to UN estimates 20 million people need humanitarian assistance – more than the scale of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

More details about the football tournament will be released at the start of September.

The first of many

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

On Saturday 14th August, the first Ifield Fun Day kicked off in style.

Organised by Councillor Ali Burke and various member of Crawley Borough Council, the first Ifield fun day was visited by many. There was plenty to do, with a bouncy castle and Chase Fitness with their silly sports and a raffle, information stalls and of course Crawley’s most loved Ice Cream man Danny Ibrahim. Also attending raising money were Chris Oxlade and our dear friend Gary Morris. The Mill House supplied the food and drink while ‘Just Kelly’ came down to entertain all as a bumble bee on stilts. We also had a display of Irish dancing by some excellent and talented young ladies from various dance schools.

Not even the rain put a damper on the days event. Crawley Happy Times were invited down to have fun and meet some new and old faces. It was a great day and we would like to thank Ali for the invite. Well done to all involved. We look forward to next year. Hopefully the sun will shine all day for you then :-)

We spoke to Councillor Ali Burke and Marie Ovenden who both told us about the team effort that had gone into making the day such a success. You can hear more in the interviews below.

Here are some clips of the Ifield Fun Day. Make sure you put it in your diary for next year! This year we had a self defence demonstration, a dance demonstration from the local Irish dance clubs and a great clip of the Mayor Lee Burke and Councillor Ali Burke in competition on the assort course, and much more. Crawley Happy Times went along for the fun.
