On Saturday, 22nd of August, Crawley Happy Times were invited down to Gratton’s Park for the annual Cancer Rally Day. Numerous teams entered the rally, a rally where one member of a team must be on the track at all times between 14:00 Saturday to 14:00 Sunday: a whole 24 hours of walking round the track!  It was a very colourful, positive atmosphere, with some vibrant stands selling goods varying from cakes, jewellery, hand-made sand ornaments and other interesting items, all being sold to raise money for Cancer Research.

There were also a couple of stands helping to raise money, but not participating in the rally.  They were Muriel Levett & Ruth Marchant, Sophie Scowen from Starbucks serving delicious hot coffee and Matthew Reid with a fabulous teddy stand.  Sophie from Starbucks told us they were holding an instore raffle for the whole of August, with a lovely large hamper up for grabs. So do pop in and buy a raffle ticket if you’re passing.

We met some amazing people at the event, all there with something in common; to support others and raise money at the same time.  Some people were celebrating life as survivors of cancer, whereas others were still fighting for their lives but using every inch of energy to help during the day.

Morag Clapp sat in her chair, cheerfully watching as the day went on. We would never have guessed that Morag is currently undergoing chemotherapy for the third time in four years. We had a brief chat with Morag and wished her well, hoping we will have the pleasure of seeing her back next year.  Walking round the field, we bumped into young Alex Lewry who was on the track, doing his part for the team. Alex looked the picture of health, so it was quite shocking when he told us about his brain tumour, at the young age of thirteen. Alex was declared clear in February 1999.  We didn’t want to ask his age, but can imagine Alex is about 20 now, so his struggle was a long one. To still dedicate his time year on year just goes to show how this awful disease affects people. We wish Alex all the best for a healthy future.

Watching over the day were Emergency First Response.  There were 20 dedicated staff keeping a vigilant eye on the event. We spoke to Jerry Marler, cook for the day, who told us he is a survivor of cancer and felt compelled to help out in any way he can. Jerry’s cooking must be good as the staff looked well fed!

There was plenty of entertainment too: Darren & Nickie Bow volunteered their time on stage to host the event, with karaoke from the children and music for the crowd and participants. We are sure their contribution to the day made it all that much nicer.  More entertainment came from the Crawley Blackbelt Academy, led by Senior Instructor Wayne Beadell. The youngsters put on a wonderful display of Martial Arts.

There was also Crawley Kung Fu School present who are holding a woman’s self defence class in the future that is not to be missed. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more information.

All in all, the day was uplifting, emotional, fun, awe inspiring and hot! Our thanks go to those who welcomed us and had their pictures taken, those who shared their heart warming experiences and just generally made us feel privileged to be blessed with good health. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our personal thanks go to Michelle Matthews, who volunteered her time to take pictures for us.

We will keep you posted on the dates for next year as soon as we know. Crawley Happy Times are considering a team of their own next year. If you fancy being on our team, just write to us at shelley@crawleyhappytimes.co.uk

Cherry Lane Adventure Playground’s Day of fun

Everyone had a great day

Everyone had a great day

Today not even the rain could put a damper on the Cherry Lane Adventure Playgound’s family fun day. Families from all over Crawley and some from further afield turned up with their children in tow to enjoy their day. Some brought picnics, others just brought themselves and something to sit on.  The playground was amass with happy, smiley children, running around, trying out all the different equipment available. The park consists of two skate ramps, one large skate and bike area, two zip wire areas (one of which is included in the Court Jail building), a Wild West play area, a toddlers’ play area, a mini trampoline and, of course, two buildings for rainy days which hold various equipment and toys.  In addition to the usual activities, there was face painting, four inflatables (gladiators, little princess, animal slide and inflatable basketball), glass painting and there were also some children’s books for sale.

The whole day was in aid of raising money for the playground. Cherry Lane has been open, entertaining children, for many years.  I used to visit regularly and have some great memories, ones that were reignited when I bumped into Philip Hayes. Philip is the ‘grandad’ of the adventure playgrounds in Crawley and has looked after ’our children’ for over twenty years!  Philip retired eight years ago but still comes along to see the children from the past, most of them now with their own little ones.

Philip has not hung up his helpful hat just yet as he volunteers his time to Crawley Gateway Club who are affiliates of Mencap.  If Crawley gave MBEs to deserving individuals, Philip would be our first choice, although awards have been presented to Philip in the past.  Thank you for looking after me when I was a youngster, Phil! x

Another face well known to the children of Crawley is Bob Carney. Bob retired last year but still came along to enjoy the day and to see some familiar faces.  Seems these dedicated people just can’t stay away, even when they are no longer expected to work.  Now that is dedication!

Donny Rogers was keeping an eye on the animal bouncy slide, Paul McKinly looked out for the toddlers in thier own little playarea which included a mini bouncy castle and Vicki Walder was supervising the gladiator inflatable. Responsibility for ticket sales was shared between Beverly Loxston,  Dawn Parkinson and Debbie Roberts. Refreshments were served by Robyn Walder.  The playground and staff take such care over the grounds, that they even had Andy walking around picking up any stray litter which may have been accidently dropped during the day.

Ice creams were sold by Whippy Ices.  Owner Mr. Jassie told us he was making a donation to help raise money for the playground and thought it was a splendid day all round. Nice work, Mr. Jassie.

We were entertained all day with music, karaoke (especially any songs performed by young John, who has a great voice).  We had performances by Deb’s Egyptian Belly Dancers, care of Louise Ryrie Smith Dance and Drama School, based in Northgate and a dance lesson from Michaela of Pirouette Performers Oriel Dance Studio, based in Maidenbower. The children and their families thoroughly enjoyed all the entertainment.

We asked a few of the parents about their thoughts on this wonderful day.  Kelly Golder said, “Apart from the brief rain shower, it has been another great day.  I have been coming to Cherry Lane for nineteen years with my children”.

Paul Williams of Tilgate said “it’s my first time here and the kids are having a brilliant time.  If I go somewhere like this and I don’t see my children for long periods of time, then I know they are having fun and I do not need to worry. We will definitely be back next year”.

We had a great day.  If you were unable to make this years family fun day, then keep an eye out for next years dates which we will try and get to you as early as possible so you can make arrangements to come along and have fun with the family!

Inflatables galore!

Inflatables galore!

We received an update from Dawn Parkinson just before goiing live with this story.  Dawn told us “we would like to thank the Crawley Happy Times for coming down and thought you might like to know we had 750 children and adults attend the fun day with a massive total of £1,400 being raised for the playground and new equipement. We would like to thank everyone who came down and made it such a great day”.

Cherry Lane Family Day 2008
Cherry Lane Family Day 2008

Please read the follow up here..

So, we are rapidly approaching the end of the school summer holidays and the children are probably getting a little bored by now.  So what can you do with them that will keep them occupied and assist them in sleeping well?  The answer is to bring them down to Cherry Lane Adventure Playground in Langley Green, Crawley on Friday, 21st August!

“What is happening?” I hear you ask.  Well, this is what we put to Dawn Parkinson, Manager of the Playground.  Dawn said, “Cherry Lane Adventure Playground will be holding its annual Fun day on Friday, 21st August, from 11am – 4pm.”

“Entry is free, but, to access all the inflatables for the whole day, there is a charge of £3.00 for a wristband. This will include face painting and games so everybody can have a go!  Make sure you stick around to see our Belly Dancing show at 2pm which the children have been preparing for bt attending workshops, ready to perform on the day. You can also  become a star for the day on the Karaoke!”

Dawn went on to tell us; “There will also be a BBQ selling hot food, a Tombola and Raffle, with prizes donated by local shops and businesses. All the proceeds will go towards buying new games and equipment for the coming year”.

We asked Dawn how the event went last year,  and she said; “last year we raised £800, which we spent on a new TV, computer games and mixing decks,  plus lots of Art & Craft materials. This year, with your help, we hope to match this amount, plus raise even more, as we would like to buy new equipment for our music room and add to our collection of Go Karts, which have been really popular this year. We look forward to seeing all our old friends and many new faces to make this a fantastic family event”.

The day is for chiildren of all ages but please note children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

It sounds like it is going to be an excellent day, and for just £3 the children can play, get tired out and go to bed early. The best value for money a parent could buy!

Crawley Happy Times will be attending, so if you want your picture on the site, meet us down there! Our thanks go to Michelle Matthews for making us aware of this event and Dawn Parkinson for inviting us along.

If you have any further enquiries as to what Cherry Lane Adventure Playground can offer your child, then please call 01293516163, where a member of staff will be available to provide any help or advice.

Miss Crawley celebrates at Liquid & Envy

Natalie Fagence is Miss Crawley 2009

Natalie Fagence is Miss Crawley 2009

On Friday, 14th August, Natalie Fagence donned her crown and took her friends and family to Liquid & Envy in Crawley to dance the night away and toast her success. The Crawley News launched the competition 5 weeks ago, for the second year in a row. For a two week run, they posted beautiful pictures of some local ladies all looking to be crowned ‘Miss Crawley’. Two weeks were then devoted to frantic voting. There were a staggering 8,049 votes cast, with 44% of the votes cast for Natalie.

The competition was held last year, for the first time, under the supervision of Michael Connellan. Shannon Duggan was crowned the stunning winner.

We spoke to Alex Morrison, Senior Reporter for The Crawley News, who said: “the competition is mainly a bit of fun, but could be a great starting point for anyone wanting to get a step on the modelling ladder. The entrants then go on to represent the community of Crawley in various ways, mainly through charitable functions. I have not personally met Natalie yet, but have heard she is willing to participate in such occassions, which is great. I hear Natalie has her feet firmly on the ground; focusing on her education first, which we are all in support of”.

When we met Natalie on her celebrations she told us she wanted to finish university first, where she is training to become a Crime Scene Officer as part of her Bachelor of Science Honours degree. With so much to do, Natalie is going to take the modelling prospects one day at a time. It sounds to us like Natalie definitely has her feet firmly on the ground.

We asked Adam Foxley, Deputy Manager of Liquid & Envy, how he felt about having this event celebrated at the club. Adam said “it is a great occassion. We always enjoy supporting the local community. We want to wish Natalie all the best for her future and will support her in any way we can.” Kieran Laville, barman, said “it is an honour to have Natalie here for her celebrations; she is very a beautiful young lady”.  DJ Wayne Terry also told us it was a pleasure to play for her.

Natalie, 19, is now getting ready to return to university and finish her studies so if there are any modelling agencies reading this, we suggest snapping up this treasure as soon as possible!

We would like to wish Natalie Fagence all the success in the future, whatever she decides to do. Please view the interviews with Natalie and Mum, Lisa, below.  Apologies for the darkness of the video!

Our thanks go out to Sabrina Ebanks and her Dad ,Mycall, for their help in producing this video.

On Saturday we joined The Connoisseurs at The White Knight in Pound Hill for their charity fundraiser day.  The sun shone, the music played, the food was eaten and the charity fund went up and up.

The Beautiful Fuzzylicious Fresh

The Beautiful Fuzzilicious Fresh

We had the pleasure of speaking to the guys who put so much effort into making the day a great success and they told us they felt there were not enough opportunities for youngsters to participate in fundraising. In light of this, they put this day together in a way they felt would attract the younger side of the community. They certainly got it right! You can hear more from the guys in the interview at the bottom of the page.

Females get funky

It really was a wonderful day. From 14:00 onwards, each DJ took it in turns to play their selected preference of music, ranging from happy house to heavy drum and bass. First up we had the pleasure of the beautiful Fuzzilicious Fresh. A local female DJ, who told us that, to be any good, you must know your music and what your audience will want to hear. Fuzzilicious Fresh played some brilliant garage tunes for us.

Cherry… fly?

Next up, we were honoured with another female DJ who goes by the name of Cherry Fly. Cherry Fly wore an amazing black & purple outfit and blasted out some great house tunes. She told us she feels that a good education is a great asset to have, even when DJing: Cherry Fly went to college to advance her music knowledge along with her mixing skills and would encourage others to do the same.

Meanwhile, the hot dogs and burgers were flying off the grill. Dave Winbolt was the ‘chef’ for the day, assisted intermittently by Scott ‘Ronson’ Clarke. Dave created some delectable food at a reasonable cost, with all proceeds going to the nominated charity of the day, St Catherine’s Hospice.

In amongst the revellers, running around keeping everyone happy and the place clean and tidy, were landlord and landlady of the White Knight, Bridgette and John. They have supported this event from the start and were honoured to have it held in the White Knight.

The White Knight public house is a splendid place to hold this type of event due to the space and atmosphere of the building. There are pool tables, darts and large flat screen TVs for the sports enthusiasts and a neat dance floor, with a stage for the DJs which also includes a convenient communal area around the dance floor which is great for private parties. We found the toilets were consistently clean and tidy and the service prompt and friendly. Bridgette and John told us all about their involvement-  they told us it was a brilliant way to raise money for such a worthy cause, and they look forward to hosting other similar events in the future. A highly recommended location, in our humble opinion. For more information on the White Knight and its management, please watch the interview below.

As the day drew to an end, the donation buckets started to fill up with donations from those jingling any change in pockets.  We are pleased to announce the total amount raised for St Catherine’s Hospice came to a whopping £470! Dan told us that they hope this is the first of many fund raising events; we think they may be on to a winner and hope to be invited to the next one.  Well done!

P.S.  I believe Dan is already planning part two… watch this space….!

The Harvester are making wishes come true throughout August

Friday, August 14th, 2009

The Harvester, Crawley2

This Saturday, 15th August, marked the third event for Harvester’s fundraising events for The Make A Wish Foundation. The staff donned their uniform-themed outfits and entertained the visitors while they dined.  Their aim is to raise £800 by the end of August.  We spoke to the manager Lisa.

The Harvester’s previous events have included a Country and Western theme night: staff dressed up as saloon girls and cowboys to name but a few, and there were children’s cowboy hats available to purchase. All proceeds were donated to the Foundation and will be again this year. They also held a cake sale.  Claire Halton, who works at The Harvester, told us “staff cooked or provided cakes and cookies for customers to purchase. There was face painting available for the children. This proved to be a lovely day for the whole family, though desserts weren’t popular on this day… I can’t think why not! Everyone had a wonderful day and we are hoping this year will be just as much fun; along with funds being raised for the Make A Wish Foundation“.

In this photo: - Claire Halton (policewoman), Lisa Wood (Secretary), Cheryl Halton (policewoman), Scott MacArthur (general manager), Cullum Stuart (Builder), Sham (footballer), Joanna (policewoman), Milan Jaros (life guard), Tony (pilot), Sam (nurse), Luigi (russian army), John (chef), Dani (foxy cheerleader), Paul Jacob (fred flintstone), Anna (army personnel) and Trisha (hawaiian waitress)

Claire continued: “Make A Wish Foundation is such a fantastic charity. The Harvester set a target of £800 to raise and they are half-way to this target right now. It would be brilliant to see some new faces showing support, and you will get fed well at the same time.  We are raising money throughout August, so if people can come down and make a donation, this would be greatly appreciated”.

All of the staff and management team have put time and effort into organising and carrying out these events and are proud to be doing this for Make A Wish Foundation.

Why not release yourself from the shackles of the kitchen and take a trip down there tonight?! You won’t regret it!

‘The Connoisseurs’ mixing it up for local charity

Logo for 15th Aug #2

Read the review on this fantastic event here..

On the 15th August, Dan Gillingham and friends are holding a charity dance night in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Dan ‘Gee’ Gillingham, a local DJ, is using his talents to raise money for the local St Catherine’s Hospice, who care for those who are very ill.  Dan said “This is our charity launch event being held at The White Knight. Hopefully this is the first of many more charity events in Crawley over the next few months and years.  Myself & Marcus Lee, along with our close friend Ronson (all DJs) wanted to start an event in Crawley for all the people that enjoy hearing us play.  So we thought the ideal way would be to combine this with raising money for charity.”

We asked Dan why he’d chosen St Catherine’s Hospice;  “We chose St Catherine’s Hospice because it is a charity very close to my heart due to a family member spending time there before they passed away.  This is an amazing place with amazing staff and it is dependent on the public raising funds to stay operational.  So we got together with some of our DJ friends, who are all local to Crawley, and arranged to throw a wicked day/night event, with some serious music and, of course, to raise as much money as possible!   The White Knight Public House and all the DJs (inclusive of all equipment) have all donated their time and services free of charge, so it makes it easier to donate all proceeds to the charity”.

We spoke to Bridget Brant of the White Knight, who said “We completely support this event.  St Catherine’s Hospice is very close to our hearts as we also lost a member of our family three years ago and could not have coped without their support and assistance.”

Debbie Plentie, PR & Communications Executive at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “”We have heard about this event and it’s fantastic that Dan and his friends are using their musical skills to support us in this way.  We need to raise £4.7 million through voluntary income each year and we’re really grateful to our community for supporting us through activities like this, because every penny counts.”

Crawley Happy Times Online think this is a wonderful and inventive way to raise money for such a fantastic local charity.   We look forward to seeing you at the event, where we will be interviewing the DJs and, of course, those who support the event by attending.

See you there!

Another successful Inflatable Day

The Gladiators

Wow! What a brilliant day! For the third year in a row, the inflatable day at Southgate playing fields was a massive success. There was so much to do, it took us about 3 hours to get round and speak to everyone.  First we were greeted by Sam Murray, Project Officer and Barbie Hartin, Manager of Waterlea Playground, where we purchased the bands for the children at an affordable £3 each.  This included access to all of the inflatables and the Laser Storm.

The painted face

Then, as the children excitedly worked out what bit of fun to have first, we made our way to the face-painting tent where we found Michelle Matthews, Leanne Hussey, Denise Lyons and Gemma Brooks; all Play Workers, busy painting tiny, happy faces. The children were quickly transformed into tigers, butterflies, spider people and various other amazing creations. They were doing a great job considering the humidity of the day, which as any woman can confirm, can play havoc with the make-up.

 Great fun for the kids

Further along we encountered the under-6 play area. There were so many tubes, ball pits and various other toys to keep the toddlers busy, it was a great break for the parents to safely let the children go and play without any worry of harm, while they sat around the edge, relaxing. The colours in the play area were bright and vibrant, enticing the young ones and keeping them amused for hours. Of course, the area was capably supervised by Jane Bond and Lacey Wayman, also Play Workers.  A great idea for those parents or child carers with children of various ages.  Right next door to this fantastic set up they had a mini inflatable castle for the toddlers to enjoy and, take our word for it, they enjoyed it immensely! In the knowledge that the children were under the watchful eyes of Play Worker Robyn Walder, parents and carers could relax and enjoy the sunshine.Toddlers thoroughly enjoying the wonderful under 6 play area.

Refreshments Required

It had become quite hot by this time, so we made our way over to the refreshment tent where we were greeted by Chris Morgan, Play Leader at Waterlea, and has done fantastic work with children of all ages for many years.  Chris was ably by his staff, Ruby Baverstock and Kayleigh Ambrose. We had a lovely cup of coffee, made by Chris, which went down a treat. Thank you Chris.

Piroutte Performers

Pirouette Performers, a dance school in Crawley built soley by Michaela Dodgson, put on some brilliant free workshops and also offered free dance class vouchers, which enticed many of the young children to participate.  We’re sure you would like to hear more about Michaela and her climb to success, so watch this space!

Connexions

Our friends from Connexions were the next on the visit schedule.  Dedicated Youth Worker, Jo Bell, was present, but in her Mobile Co-Ordinator role this time.  So many ‘hats’, and such a hard worker!  Alongside Jo, we were introduced to Pat Wickes, Key Advisor & Guidance Worker who also manages the Connexions drop-in centre in the town.  We didn’t dare ask either of these ladies what they did in their spare time, as we can’t imagine they have any! Both Jo and Pat were positioned in front of the Connexions bus; it was extremely impressive with its desk-like set-up and a little sofa seat to the rear.  Jo told me the bus serves Crawley by travelling around and helping youths in the community with work, life and drug advice and support.  It is a brilliant concept and we at Crawley Happy Times are very interested in speaking to Jo and Pat further about how Connexions assists our community.  Again, watch this space.

 Revitalising Water

Relief was forthcoming from the humid weather we were experiencing (not that we’re complaining), as we encountered Anne Corbett handing out free water and apples, care of ASDA.   Anne is a fresh face for Asda, having recently taken the position of Events Co-ordinator.  Anne was made for this role as her friendly and happy approach made it easy to speak to her and accept one of her delicious bottles of water.  Thank you Anne.

 I scream for ice-cream!

Even more relief was forthcoming when we bumped into Danny Ibrahim of Izzysices.  Danny has been an ice-cream vendor for many years and was brilliant with the young ones, offering various sauces and competitive prices.  The ice-cream cones were very generous and we enjoyed them immensely.  Not only was Danny doing a wonderful job with the children, but was he also chose to donate a percentage of his takings to Crawley Borough Council, the holder of the event.  It must have been extremely hot in his van too.  Well done, Danny!

SPF24

Happy but tired

Are you feeling slightly tired yet?  We were, and we were only halfway around this amazing, entertaining event.  For the duration of the event, there were children everywhere and not once did we hear any moans, groans or crying.  Bliss!

Then we came across various bouncy inflatable objects including a huge bouncy slide mindfully watched by Mandy Martin, Play Worker, a bouncy inflatable basketball arena, supervised by young Tom Francis and then the inflatable gladiator arena, refereed by Ryan Ripley, another Play Worker.

Arty Work

Along the way, we once again had the pleasure of bumping into the Worshipful the Mayor Brenda Burgess who was getting her hands dirty, painting with the children. Mayor Burgess looked like she thoroughly enjoyed herself.  We also met Nigel Sheehan, Head of Community Services for Crawley Borough Council and were chuffed when Nigel complimented us on the write-up we did for the opening of the new parkour and play area in Bewbush recently.

Restriction the key to the next Beckham?

Later that day, we discoverd a strange-looking, round cage-like contraption which enclosed some young children running around inside with a football.  We were intrigued by this, so approached a young lady leaning against the nearby van. Sarah Davis explained that the curious cage-contraption was in fact used for 2-on-2 football games. It has been invented to help children with control and discipline. Sarah and Paul Norcross, development officers for Nomad, a Christian organisation aiming to introduce Christianity to the young, were very passionate about what they did and explained how the various programs and activities they provide, including the football games, help children to learn.  “Nomad is here to show youngsters there are people who really care about them if they need support” Said Sarah.

Good food fast, not fast food

Another generous contribution to the day came from a very clean and tidy mobile catering unit called The Healthy Appetite whose motto, in our eyes, is ingenious: “good food fast, not fast food”.   David Lyons, owner of the catering unit, told us they were donating food to all the workers at the event, free of charge.  This is a great way of showing thanks for their presence and earnings from the day.  David and his assistant, Lee Gibbs, were non-stop as the food was lovely (so we are told: ‘we’ are on a diet).  Thank you for all your hard work.

Making music

Amongst the laughter, joy and thrills from the youngsters enjoying the day, we were entertained by various local young bands.  Unfortunately we did not get the names of all of them (although we recognised one of the bands from a charity event in Copthorne a couple of weeks ago; nice to see you guys again) but we did manage to pin down a band called Small Print.

Rick, Martyn and Tariq

Small Print consisted of Rich Franklin, (guitar and backing vocals), Martyn Wilson, (guitar and vocals), Keiran Giffen, (drums), Josh Franklin, (bass guitar), and, standing in for an absent member, Tariq Kajwaja, (guitar).  Great sound guys – keep up the good work!

Mischief and Mayhem

You may not want to know which tent we visited next.  Let’s just say you entered at your own risk.  Mayhem comes to mind.  Denise Lyons, who we met earlier in the face painting tent, stood in front of us, surrounded by young children with what can only be described as ‘yukky stuff’ all over them.  We enquired as to the nature and name of this particular tent before entering, as it looked dangerous.  Denise and her colleague, Kate Nulty, told me it was the ‘Messy Play’ tent.  Well it certainly lived up to its name!  We took a picture to prove we are not exaggerating and then swifly left before we got covered ourselves!

Getting active

Last, but not least, we had the climbing wall and ‘laser storm’ enclosure.  Both pieces of equipment were brought to the event by a company called Altitude.  Ben Williams and Jemma Askew told us that both the climbing wall and the laser storm (a huge, inflatable, enclosed arena on the hill)  had been a great hit with all ages and that they had provided the equipment at a discount, to help the Council with costs.  The Laser storm was being looked after by Zara Smith and Andy Green on the outside but we were not adventurous enough to go inside to meet anyone else (far too hot).

What the parents had to say

While we wondered around the mass of children, inflatables and contented looking parents we asked some what they thought of the day.  This what they had to say:

Natasha Williams from Tilgate said “the kids are having a wonderful time.  My youngest has had her face painted and the boys are having fun”

Janine Hicklin from Langley Green said “there is alot to do for the kids. It is great entertainment and I fell really confident letting the kids go off and play. We even bought a picnic”

Carla Lethbridge from Gossops Green said “it is a fantastic day and great value for money. There is no excuse not to bring the kids down”

Thank you

Mark and Tony looked after our safety

Our thanks goes to Beverly Gibbons for inviting us down to such a brilliant and well organised safe fun day and to all the Council workers who put so much time and effort into the event making it one of the best days out so far.  We are sure everyone who attended this fabulous event are grateful to Mark Paffett and Tony Hawkins who work for Crawley Borough Council and were responsible for the maintenance and inspection on the day. Their presence did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Also a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this write up and especially to Danny from Izzyices for the icecream and rasberry sauce. It was delicious!

Below you can watch the interview with the main organiser Kathryn Ripley, Community Development Officer for Crawley Borough.  It comes in 2 parts due to technical difficulties :-)

U17′s driving course, a great hit!

Last weekend, Shelley from Crawley Happy Times Online took her son Alex to Rushmore Arena in Aldershot for a two hour driving lesson.  What’s so special about that, I hear you say?  Well, Alex is only fifteen.  Local driving school, Storm offer under 17′s driving lessons to anyone over the age of fourteen.  Alex had a great time and by the end of the lesson

was driving with confidence and control. The lesson was extremely in-depth, starting with the instructor, Clive Greenfield, taking Alex through the controls and pedals, explaining what they do, which ones to press and when, including indicators and mirrors.  By the end of the two hours, Alex was learning reverse parking.

‘Off Road’ lessons are for learners who have had issues passing, or people who have passed their test but had a bad experience on the road, knocking their confidence.  Storm Driving School has a wealth of experience and knowledge and their pass rate currently stands at 82%, with all instructors being a grade 5 or above.

The lessons are provided for various reasons.  For fun, to build confidence and, of course, to give the more mature teenagers

a great foundation for learning on the road.  Leaner drivers always state that traffic is the one thing that makes it a nerve racking experience at first.

Great scenery. Peaceful and stress free

Learning the basics on a road without any other traffic builds confidence and might end up saving you money for lessons in the long run.

The Rushmore Arena is a modest journey down the M25, then the M3 and very easy to find.  The scenery is breathtaking and peaceful. Remember that adults have to sit and wait for two hours, so taking an engrossing book to read whilst the learner is on the course is advisable. Mind you, there is always the opportunity to slip off shopping in Aldershot town centre or visit Tescos to do the grocery shopping! Alternatively, there is the local banger racing opposite the driving arena.

Storm Driving School has been teaching pupils on Crawley roads for nearly 3 years and have an impeccable record for passing pupils first time round.

Our thanks go to Daniel and Deborah Rooke who run Storm Driving School and of course to the patience of Clive Greenfield who taught Alex.
